Most people don't know that Hunter's older brother Walt Gelien was killed in Vietnam in 1965 and left behind a wife and 7 children, all of whom Hunter took responsibility for raising. He was an amazing stand up guy. RIP.

I know it's easy (and true) to say he was closeted by today's standards, but notice how Tab was still trying to drop hints though; "He lives in a rented house with with secretary John Donaldson." at 2:26. If Tab were a less-honest, and more-deeply-closeted kinda dude, he wouldn't have let John be mentioned at all let alone actually be ON camera, so, I give Tab credit for at least trying his best to telegraph clues to anyone open to pick them up.
@Noone92279 жыл бұрын
According to his autobiography, John Donalson ended up being a deadbeat and basket case, extorting money from him by threatening to send cards and love letters written to him by Tab to the tabloids. Interesting to see the type of guy he goes for considering he's relatively masculine. His BFs have all been skinny, young, and rather effeminate looking.
@thomaslemarocain91327 жыл бұрын
Great observation! And honestly, his "real life" boyfriends have all been less than good-looking (the last two, plain ordinary borderline ugly?)... which is that much striking considering how gorgeous he is/was.

@thomaslemarocain91327 жыл бұрын
Not discretion, lies. When you do a biopic about someone and go as far as filming in the person's house, the least is to be honest. If you want discretion, you don't allow TV shows to be made about you. Can't have it both ways: publicity AND discretion. #realitycheck #you'rewelcome
@OldDunc6 жыл бұрын
@@thomaslemarocain9132 Agreed, basically, but remember that this was 1977. A lot has changed since then. Almost no celebrities were out then. I'm kinda impressed that he didn't just send his boyfriend home for a few days while Rather was there. In 1977 terms, this was fairly bold.
@OldDunc6 жыл бұрын
@@RottiDog100 I suppose you feel the same way about every celebrity who flaunts a heterosexual "private life"?
@tonybennett41595 жыл бұрын
@@RottiDog100 In order to keep your private life private when you are in the public eye, you actively have to lie. You have to think carefully not to let the wrong pronoun out, you have to make sure that you don't go to movies, concerts, theatres etc with the person who is your partner. You have to swear those close to you to secrecy. No heterosexual has ever needed to do that. It was less discretion and more evasion, which also was not required by heterosexuals. Look at Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, together for decades, who kept their private life private except they were known to be together, and they were seen in public on occasions, they weren't required to hide anything.
