I see all you guys doing the same thing, cracking the throttle when you have the choke enricher on. They start easier if you leave the throttle closed. It helps suck fuel through the circuit if you leave the throttle closed.

Thanks for sharing your bike. I have the 78 400. I would love to get a matching 77 one day. There is an aftermarket pipe made for these.

It(the pipe) is made by P.S Tuning in the Netherlands. Cost-450 bucks. It is made out of titanium I believe. From my e-mail response from them it is designed with the stock mild ports in mind. Adds 3 to 4 ponies at the horsepower peak, more low end/mid range torque!(wow!), and a slight increase in rev capability. The reason is this pipe is just what Yamaha could have built back in 77, but instead they went with the very inefficient design reminiscent of the earlier 400's, 360's, and the small bores. The 78 400 pipe suffers from an overly large headpipe flange compared to the exhaust outlet, 2 large frame clearance dents, 1 carb cable clearance dent. Inside- there is that batting or baffling behind a mesh screen around the expansion chamber wall, plus a crude baffle plate in the irregular shaped convergent cone. All this adds up to a weaker overall signal from the engine to the pipe and back again. The pipe has the yz style exhaust outlet collar and springs and mounts are welded on the pipe as stock, so it is truly plug and play. Google "P.S Tuning DT400 pipe" I may get that pipe or alter an fmf pipe for a 78 yz400- it does not seem too much work, but for the fmf I altered my ports quite a bit.

If you want to buy this bike it is for sale, i bought it from ed in 2016(thanks ed!) Its in my dads garage in newtown connecticut with only one more mile on it. I moved to belgium shortly after getting it

What number is it. I just picked one up on the weekend . Pretty ruff but that's ok. She is a 0005** bike. Matching numbers too. Because the numbers are so early she actually came out in 76. Anyway nice bike hope mine is so nice one day

MAY NEED NEW CRANK SEALS .WHEN THEY GO BAD IT WILL SUCK AIR AND OIL FROM THE CRANKCASE
