im telling you man.yamaha made some beautiful bikes.i just watched a yamaha video where showed all the yz bikes from the early 80s to 2019 and they were georgus iincluding this one.i know its not a yz but still awesome.

Bought one brand new in 1977 from Ray Fine Yamaha in Chickasha, OK. Only thing I changed was went one tooth down on the front sprocket which allowed for a beautiful third gear wheelie totally under control. Very nice trail bike.

I always remember back when I was about 13/14 years old. I used to get to my cousins early to go to school. A guy across the street had one. He had an after market exhaust on it. Loved it. Listening too it ticking over before he disappeared up the road in a plume of heavenly 2 stroke smoke. Unbeknown to me at the time he used castrol R 2 stroke oil. I obviously know this now but then I didn't. But that beautiful smell of burning castrol R. Top bike 👍👍👍👍👍😍

The weak link on these, when ridden hard for a long time, the RH main bearing insert that is cast into the case will come loose. Allows oil to be sucked out of the transmission and burned. Not sure if it's caused by the angle of the primary drive hears or just harmonics? Not sure why they built the case like they did. LH case didn't have insert. Only other real issue was the 77 didn't have a bushing in 1st gear and ran directly on the shaft. Eventually the shaft/gear would gall and the gear would explode sometimes ventilating the cases. Keeping the trans oil changed & routing the trans vent up under the tank was critical. The 78 had a bushing in 1st gear. I never had a failure with my 78 and it had a TON of road & dirt miles. The kick starter was pretty weak too. Had to keep the pivot clean and greased. Bought a blown up 78 YZ125E and put the IT engine in that frame. Direct bolt in. Was missing a few irrelevant brackets, but nothing ever fell off. The extra 2" of travel & aluminum swingarm made a HUGE difference along with some porting & Boyesen reeds. Did my own porting. Doin port jobs basically paid for my tires from 75-80. Did a bunch.

I had a 78, 175 IT. Won 1st place in a enduro down here in Chipola Louisiana first time I raced it. Loved that bike. Bought it new and sold it about 5 years later. That was my first mistake after getting married!

I had a 1982 IT125 " 224cc Bore and stroke" that topped out at 100 MPH, in like 12 seconds! had a 85 RM 125 piston, and carb using a tunnel ram type carb spacer with fully ported KX250 jetting, custom rings for a high compression 93 octane only! had a 1986 CR125R pipe with modded expansion chamber, mind you the bottom end bearing was a much stronger tool & die grade machined bearing 500K Psi or higher even smoked Paul's 1993 Works KX 250, sorry Paul.

the only problem i ever see with these bikes is if ya lose money on the old bikes im sure sometimes ya do hopefully ya can write the differnece off otherwise ya probably wouldn't still be in bussiness better fix the tail light
