I remember this like it was yesterday. 1977 was my third season as a Vikings fan and I loved every minute of it. Problem is, I keep trying in vain to pick out my 11-year-old self in the main stand. Great to see my favourite visiting rider, the wonderful Terry Betts. Didn't want Olsen to win it, though. I don't know where they got that "popular visitor" thing from. He always got a round of boos. Quite rightly, as Donovan used to say.

That’s the way to win it! 15 point maximum 😀 would like to have seen a bit more of Joe Owen though. I saw him in the parade, but only one heat shown of him. Diamonds legend and not too bad at Hull either 😀

The Boulevard didn't have the widest track in the world, especially on the straights, though they were long at around 100 metres having to cover the length of the rugby league field so they were fast.

Fabulous to see these great riders but what terrible speedway on that slick track. Hardly any passing at all.

I loved going to Speedway at the Boulevard, they are my fondest childhood memories, only now on you tube can I see what a bloody awful track it was ha ha .. no wonder some top riders hated it. Compared to modern speedway looks dreadfully dangerous too, if you went over that fence up the terracing as Joe Owen did in 1978 you were in big trouble.

They say speedway was better back then, but there were just a couple of half-decent races and everything about this production was very amateurish, from start to finish. Watch a Polish League meeting or a Grand Prix now. The racing is so much better today, and I've been watching since the 60s.
