Damned near got into a grille of one of these back in 1963. Damned a fool racing on the highway and after I passed the other guy, a big orange colored International came around the curve. I just barely made a quick move to avoid being a causality that night. I was a fool, but, by the Grace of GOD, and I know it, I lived on. Scared me so bad, I gave up racing all together, forever. Just my 2 cents!

so cool younger guys like you love them old cabovers thats very cool!we thought they looked cool to but early 80s if you had a long nosed pete or kenworth you where a long haul west coast runner.so that started that long nose thing in the early to mid 80s.so we all wished for that.our company had 200 trucks and we had ford short nosed trucks with sleepers they rode great but weak detroits in them 20mph up a nebraska hill with a 10 speed with 80000 gross weight i coulda jumped out and steered and ran faster the transtars smoked them of course in speed and power
@BrokenWrenches
@BrokenWrenches 2 жыл бұрын
There is no doubt that the conventional trucks are better riding, this old girl is pretty noisy and bouncy. My grandpa had a handful of conventional trucks and they rode nice and you could walk into the sleeper,,,,, however the cabover trucks are in a different league as far as style and suck goes.

Just came across this video, similar to you my step father had this exact truck when he drove for North American Vans lines…It was beat to death n tired when he got it (long story), but for me being a young lad it was the coolest thing on earth..I was even fortunate enough to have taken about a 3 week trip on summer…Had the time of my life, being I was always fascinated by the trucking industry.. Thats pretty cool. They moved the door handle down to the bottom of the door starting in 1975, that way the driver could open the door while standing on the ground as opposed to having to be hanging off the truck with one hand to open the door on the earlier trucks like your dad. Thanks for watching and dreams can come true.

I can give you advice on 3 items, "I got one of these new, put 600k on it and sold it". 1. If you want the A/C to work you will need to remove the passenger seat and dig into the heater/A/c under the seat. The heating and cooling is a blend air door style and ALL the seals and hinges need to be 100 percent. 2. the Transmission is old school with the overdrive in the A-box, DO NOT pre select the splitter, ALWAYS shift the stick first then the button. 3. You IHC 472 Diffs and they are NOT the best, they have a very small Power Divider gear set and any serious spinning will kill it. Remember always use the power divider lock BEFORE you need it. Good luck with your journey.
@BrokenWrenches
@BrokenWrenches 2 жыл бұрын
Thats awesome!!! I very much appreciate any advice you can give !!! I’m certainly no expert, not even a rookie yet. I love the truck. The ac system needs to be completely rebuilt or replaced. Stupid question number 1. Whats an A-box ??? Thank you for watching my friend.
@nfarnell1
@nfarnell1 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrokenWrenches If this makes no sence let me know and I will try another way. Your Transmission is really 2 transmissions bolted together. The front part is refered to as the main box it is a 5 speed forword 1 speed reverse. The rear part has 4 speeds, all shifted by air pistons. This 4 speed box is the A-box. The high/low shift lets you shift the main box thru low to 5 when the selector on your stick is in the low (down) position. Once you have got to the 5th gear you raise the switch and put the stick back to the 2nd gear position and accelerate. The next shift you make is with other button on the stick, this shift splits the remaining gears in half so you need to switch the button for each remaining stick position. The high low shift in the A-box has a large synchronizer so it makes the shift without grinding. the splitter shift has NO synchronizer so you have to control your engine RPM carefully. The more modern Transmissions have a different way of making the split shift and work much easier, a little practice with yours and you should be able to figure out a way to get a smooth shift.

@@nfarnell1 thank you for taking the time to explain this to me. Other than my grandpa, who died a long time ago, I’m the only one in the family interested in big trucks and this is my first. They don’t understand why i would want a cabover, blows their minds. I’ve been building and restoring smaller vehicles my whole adult life and I’m super excited about tackling this International. I enjoy learning new things, and I’ve got A LOT to learn. You would have got a good laugh watching me try to drive this truck the first couple times. I still suck at it but not as bad. I’m trying to learn how to double clutch because I have to get a class B CDL and the test requires a double clutch. Probably not many people go thru the trouble of getting a cdl just for a hobby truck. Anyways I have never had to double clutching but thats coming along ok. Hardest part of that is not clutching all the way to the floor and messing it all up. Funniest part of the whole deal was trying to figure out why I couldn’t down shift !! I would take it out of gear and couldn’t hit a gear to save my life, usually had to come to a complete stop and start over. I could double clutch or float the gears easily going up thru the gears but couldn’t hit a gear for nothing going back down the gears. Finally figured out I didn’t understand how closely the gears are spaced nor how important it is to match road speed, engine speed. I was basically trying to down shift to a lower gear when i was still moving to quickly and with the rpm to low to hit a lower gear. As soon as i figured out how to goose the go pedal before hitting a lower gear i started to figure it out pretty quick. Prior to that i was just clutching it out of gear and letting the engine rpm drop way down and then trying to hit the lower gear, it was a disaster. Maybe next time i drive it I can improve a little. I’ve not even tried splitting the top gears yet. Just trying to get it down the road using the high and low ranges. Again thanks for your input.

I owned one these 4070Bs mine had the Eagle Package it was a 1979 beautiful truck. Had a 430 Detroit with a 13 speed you picked one of the best Cabovers to learn on very easy to see out of because as you pointed out the cab narrows at the top portion. Sounds like you have a Holset Turbo that’s why it sings to you. You could always tell what trucks had a Holset in the truck stops with out seeing them because of that distinctive sound. Nice find. If you live in Missouri check out Larry Schmidt truck parts he could help you find what you need and he’s old school

I wish mine had a 400 Cummins in it. That 430 Detroit was a boat anchor I had. I’ll Be watching for that video. One more tip. I don’t know where you live but you can license that truck as a antique truck in Missouri because it’s over 30 years old and it’s considered a recreational vehicle and you can put historical plates on it and you do not have to have a CDL class A class or B just a regular standard drivers license. Might want to check that out I used to have antique trucks I went to a lot of truck shows. I’m a class A CDL driver I’ve been driving for 31 years now. 4th generation trucker been around trucks all my life that’s all I know.

good luck with your search after i had to let lose of the 79 transtar they gave me a 82 pete 352 brown metallic with stripes also and i loved that truck the interior smoked the international that i loved and it had air ride!..what a treat back then it was it didn't feel like the old vinyl plain jane it had buttons and stuff thicker cozyier interior it was a older over the road truck that they demoted the pete to local hauls so i got lucky to have it for 2 years hauled gas and linseed oil with it i polished it alot.i think it was 1989 our company auctioned it off cause they where starting to change trucks cause most had 1 million on them some they rekitted and they bought 5 new white yes brand cabovers they where good trucks to.i asked my boss one day why did you buy white cabovers?,he put his arm on my shoulder and said if they crash there are easy cheap rekits for them saves me money.the whites where tall cabovers close to the ford 9000s

I have an excellent running/driving/stopping 78 cabover, dual axle with an 8spd... Mine was used to haul a 40' boat that I also bought the trailer for.... My frame is Blue, the exterior paint is White but inside the interior door is a tan color just like this only it looks brand new inside.. I'm an auto painter at a collision center and its paint still looks very good for it's age... 600k miles What are these worth ???

If the whole truck is in great shape and has good paint it should sell in the 15-25k range. The value is increasing tho.

Question sir… I just bought a super clean 1975 Transtar II. 8v71. with 13 speed. In your video at about 9:05 You talk about the poor shifter slop. There is a switch down at the base of shifter on floor… can you tell me it’s function… mine has all writing wiped off it. Many thanks John in Oregon.

Thanks Sir. I watched your vids a few times, and was able to pause and screen shoot then zoom that switch. My truck appears to have had it as well, deleted the slide, but the plumbing is all there still... I will be running mine a bit this spring as a Belly dump truck in the woods of Oregon, rebuilding road system after last seasons Fires.... See how the old girl does in the woods. @@BrokenWrenches

im going to be buying a 1981 cabover like this one, got any tips for the truck? (anything to look for when buying)
@BrokenWrenches
@BrokenWrenches Жыл бұрын
Hey. Based on my experience i would say just to look for old crash damage, especially around the cab mounts at the front pivot hinge and the latches on the back of the cab. Also check for splits, rust or bad welding repairs on the frame. Mechanical stuff is basically just looking for leaks and rotted out air lines and hoses. Other than that just check for overall completeness….chrome parts, grilles, bumpers and all the other small model specific parts are hard to find in good condition.

Thank you, it does annoy me a little. So does the frame being black instead of the factory greenish color. Its all pretty grease/rust free so changing colors wont be to hard.

@@BrokenWrenches those Cummins engines are all red in an International. I have owned four of them. I will tell you those small cam engines can be built to pull. Look up the old NTA 420 Cummins, those are one bad boy. Ihad built a couple of those. Good luck on your build. Very nice old truck.

@@BrokenWrenches I thought the F100 were labeled "ranger" not with an F series designation, or was the "ranger" an accessorized F100? I worked on those trucks (CO IH) when I was a kid in high school, started working as a diesel mechanic in 82 and we still had trucks on the road from the late 60s (mostly B models). I still have the tune up kit for setting plunger depth for most Cummins injectors including the top stop injectors (one you used a dial indicator the other a torque wrench). The 855cid Cummins (big cam)was a good strong engine but it lacked the fuel system found on Cat or Mack that used high pressure injection pumps (American Bocsh or the german Robert Bosch pumps). Good luck hope to see you in Macungie PA for the annual ATCofA show (if you're local) I'll be there with my dads 42 KB1 IH and my 66 B61 Mack. By the way when you had the engine in view it didn't appear to have an engine brake, you can still find them used for that series engine (NHT OR NHC?) Again good luck, I know how it can be trying to restore a rusty piece of iron, every time I go online to look for parts my wife gives me "the look".

@@thomasglynn2282 thank you for watching. The ranger was just an option/package deal back then. The f100 was just the basic 1/2 ton for years up until the 80’s. The f150 originally was created to skirt regulations for i think emissions for lighter trucks. They just bumped up the gvw and created a heavy half ton. Im in love with the truck. I wish i was old enough to have been around back when these were newer. Fortunately my truck is pretty complete.
