1978 junk #101 shovelhead offset cylinder boring FL FX harley kwik-way by tatro machine
this is not a full motor rebuild but just some bit work so that the owner can assemble the motor himself. this saves him some money because i only do the machining and cleaning that he can not do. he does what he can and i do what is left. it is always a good thing when the owner gets involved in their project.

What keeps the centering fingers from flying out when you turn on the boring bar?
@mjm7187
@mjm7187 3 жыл бұрын
The id of the cylinder rubs on them creating a nice burr on the centering pins and matching gouge in the cylinder. This burr on the pin makes it easier to remove them when finished.

I’m about to bore out a set of std 74” shovel cylinders to .020 over Using low compression Dixie Japan pistons. Do you have a suggestion of how much room to leave for honing to finial size? Also have a suggestion for final size for that particular piston, and do you have any experience with them? I’ve never used Dixie brand before but heard people didn’t have issues with them

you could start by reading the harley service manual. that is what it is for. tatro

@@TatroMachine yeah because the Harley manual says which brands use are good and which are shit. And even different brands and materials use different tolerances. The Dixie ones i got are old and don’t have any paperwork with em. Figured you might be knowledgeable if that was a worthy piston or not, I’m an aircooled vw guy I know which parts to use and avoid. Harley…. Not so much. Also your video ended up saying some numbers…. Helps give me an idea. Why make a video and then give some smart ass answer like that.. Btw I don’t have any more service manuals. They all burned up in shop fire by arson some random bum here in orange ca. February 1st. Of this year, And the 1 manual my buddy has doesn’t give a lot of the clear information I asked for. Trying my best to setup a temporary machine shop in the garage and wait out shop rebuild everything is out of pocket as of now as I’m looking into suing the insurance broker who fucked me. Lengthy and expensive process. Anyways thanks for that great helpful comment, kinda seems like you don’t want to be bothered after reading some of your responses to others aswell. Sorry for bugging ya dude. Enjoy the rest of what’s left of the weekend. Also… saw your mom passed recently. Mine just went yesterday. So from the most sincere place from my heart I give you my condolences.

most all cast pistons are made out of the same alloys. the pistons you have are made like stock and act that way. use the factory tolerances and you will be good. if you do stupid crap like i do than you have to adjust your clearances and finishes to what works for you. if you do not know what you are doing then you need to learn by reading and doing things to see what works. the 1st thing you need to learn is that everything effects everything. there is no one correct answer. tatro

What is your take on using/not using torque plates?
@TatroMachine
@TatroMachine 4 жыл бұрын
i don't use them because they do not repeat the warpage they cause in the cylinder bores. every time you put them on they are different. without repeatability there is no accuracy so why use them. that is their only job and they fail at it. i get the same crappy bore warpage whether i use them or not so i chose not to. tatro
