I have a 1979 115 Evinrude and when I removed the lower unit it had greasy oily residue in it all around the water pump and shift rod. Is that a seal problem?

Hey, would a dirty carb cause blowby? I am working on a 1970 Johnson 20RL 70C. Compression on both cylinders was between 124 and 130. A lot of oil coming out of the exhaust and really struggling to keep it idling without having to increase the throttle.

I could probably measure them out for you. Issue is, they are heat treated and cadmium plated; not always something the home-shop can do.

Question for you bud. I have a late 80s Mercury 9.9 that pops in and out of gear on its own. Any idea why it is doing it? Do you have any videos showing a rebuild on a lower unit similar to the merc 9.9? Figured I'd ask, been watching your videos for over a year and you seem to know a lot about outboards in general.

TrakSpock1.... What about a seized lower unit? Won't budge, lower unit had no oil. Seized bearing? Bought 2 and trying to piece one together

That's some messy, old and corroded bit of work. Possibly if you'd like your Power Blaster to penetrate better and you don"t want things cracking so much with your puller you could utilize a handy propane torch to soften things up a little.

Oh yeah, it would have helped. I ran out of fuel though, and at that point, I wasn't caring anymore.

The driveshaft puller that I used on the propshaft? Yeah. Absolutely. I finished working on a counter rotating gearcase today, that took $200 in tools alone. An L2 gearcase is even more...

I still think the video is a thumbs up. You could use threaded rod and make J hooks or cut steel and weld nuts to it, cut a circle out and drill holes. The shaft tool I would blow a circle and use an upside down U with a welded nut in the center. Points go out for getting it done!
