With the advent of paddle-shifting in racing cars of the modern era, I feel that many younger race fans have absolutely no appreciation for how difficult it was to change gears while racing, especially downshifting. It was entirely another skillset than what we see today.

Doesn't actually sound anything like what it portrays here. The mic on the camera is picking up more engine vibration than anything. Listen to the engine onboard on another video and it's a classic flat 12 sound, not this.

I watched Gilles and Jody campaign these cars at The Glen and Long Beach back in the day, it was absolute art in motion. The driver in this video should invest in some advanced driving lessons to do the car justice. If anyone set up the car's balance for this track this also needs fine tuning of the settings. Otherwise a beautiful example of a historic vehicle in motion. Thanks for sharing. Also, the exhaust note does not quite sound like a flat 12 either.

@@Gromit801 Dunno, I heard from someone who has raced there that the officials who run US historics don't like aggressive driving and if you touch an other car you're out. I could be wrong. But in this race, at least for the time I watched it, everybody just spread out after the start and didn't seem to either want to or couldn't attack the guy in front. Judging by other racing I've seen at the track there are quite a few passing spots under brakes if you can get close enough...

Conner, Sort of. The flat 12 engine didn’t allow for more complete-length side pods, used by teams racing V8s like Lotus and Williams, but it did have shorter ones.

Why can't they have the safety of current F1 with the tech of the 70's and 80's cars? Yeah sure the design would have to be different to incorporate the safety elements, but I feel you could still have both. When it becomes sadly all electric, which it will, it will cease to be motorsport. I know we have to look after the environment, but it will still be sad.

That's why the car was so unrealible, if they had longer gears the engine wouldn't finish a single race, but since you upshift every fucking 30km/h and the 5 gear is so long that you can go for a coffee. Front wing doesn't exist, aero doesn't exist.. mr Ferrari didn't care about aero.. so he lost his boy, cause the car is shit. It just has 500hp and back wing, that's all.

The Masters series does not take kindly to banzai moves. This is more of show than a full on race, and that track is not easy to pass on regardless of car type. Not enough straightaway for these cars except on the front chute. If you understood racing you would not call any of these men scared. They are having a blast while keeping these historic cars in one piece!
