I remember that I really wanted one of those motors back in that same year. But I also remember not being able to afford it. Now in my 60s I've owned all sorts of boats, mainly aluminium. But I got the most amount of pleasure from boating with a 12 footer an a 9.9 tiller on the back. From Sydney Australia. Love your videos.

Have fun. Use west a life jacket. Start off real slowly and get ways from other boat traffic. Until you get the hang of it, keep one leg over seat towards engine and the other leg towards the front. Go slow, at first. Boats don't have brakes!

@@oldjohnnyrude8404 They really don't build them like this anymore. If you had a brand new 10hp 4 stroke it would feel & sound like a lethargic sewing machine in comparison. My childhood friend had a 15 & we discovered that the 9.9 had a mechanical throttle block that prevented it from going all the way forward & the 15 had a slightly larger carb~ other than that they are identical. I decided not to mess around with mine because it was fast enough. What IS true though is that although the 9.9 sound like its working hard, it is no where near its full potential. I watched at least a dozen 9.9 vids on KZbin & yours is the ONLY one that sounds the way it is supposed to.

It would not be unusual for a 1991 J/E 9.9 in top condition to sell for $750+ in my area in the spring. Better deals can be had if you're patient, but they're great motors and they do often command a hefty price. Yes, I believe you'll be quite happy with how it pushes your 12 foot tinny. I get around 23mph with my 15hp on my 14 foot tinny. I just got an '89 Johnson 9.9 and we'll see how it does this season. Thank you for watching!

I had the 9.9 1979 model on my very first boat in 2007 it was really rough to look at then in 2008 I imported a 15hp carb for it from eBay and was sent all the way from Montana USA to the UK. The power increase was immediately noticeable and it really did feel like a new motor. I unfortunately had to sell that boat and motor in 2000 because I had to move house but believe it is still in my area. I loved that first boat and motor 😟😟

Getting ready to inherit an Evinrude on a MFG cartopper fiberglas sold by Sears. It has not run in years but for free thought I would try. What oil mixture should it use? I guess non synthetic. Are parts available?

Congrats on your motor and your boat. If your motor is the same vintage as the one in this video then it will be a 50:1 motor. If it is a pre-1964 motor it will be a 24:1 motor. Synthetic is fine in these, but any TCW3 outboard oil will suffice. Parts are still very available for this era of motor. Even the mid 50s OMC motors still have decent parts availability. Sure. The dial on the port side of the motor I a throttle stop that allows you to set a stop at the lowest throttle setting you desire at idle. Low idle or trolling speed can be set and the engine stopped using the kill button. Thanks for watching!

I have a 1988 15hp evinrude and it's on a 14 foot semi V bottom, I modified the front and put a casting platform in and a pedestal mounted seat , a 45 pound thrust trolling motor, a big deeo cycle marine battery, and I'm 6'1" and weigh 240 lbs and that thing will scat. They're great motors .

I don't own one, but recently was watching a video where the 9.9 Johnson and 15hp Johnson were pretty similar in most components. Maybe just the stroke or bore that was different, not sure, but very close.

The powerhead itself is identical between the 9.9hp and 15hp. The 9.9hp is a detuned 15hp. There were a few years where the only difference was the carburetor, but other years are more involved. The 15s have a larger carburetor, a tuned exhaust, and longer reef stops. The 15s are rated at 6000rpm and the 9.9s are rated at 5000rpm. The exhaust tuner and less restricted intake are the difference. Thanks for watching!

It is, indeed, a shame they went out. It's good that BRP kept them going for a while longer, but their ultimate fate was certainly unfortunate. They were not without their issues and occasional duds, but overall were very reliable and great running outboards. It would have been awesome to see how that company would have evolved and what they could have made had it not been for a series of poor decisions and poor management. Thanks for watching!

Where do you get a impeller fore it mine stopped pumping water

New impellers are available from your local BRP/Evinrude dealer and online from various sources like Marineengine.com and others. If your motor still doesn't pump sufficient water after the impeller is replaced, the upper water tube grommet in these has been known to melt and partially block the water passage if the motor has ever been overheated. I have a 1981 Evinrude 9.9, quick question, are these motors made to tilt freely while in drive (if you were to hit rock/ground)? Or should you just run the motor in the "tilt" setting instead of the "run" setting?

These motors are made to "snap free" if an object is struck. The motor should be operated in the "run" or "lock" setting. This prevents the motor from lifting when rapidly slowing down and when reversing. The "tilt" setting is only for manually tilting the motor into tilt lock position and for engaging shallow water drive position. In "run" position the latch is locked, but the hook is spring loaded and still allows the motor to tilt up to prevent damage in the event of a strike on a solid object. Thanks for watching!

What a nice little motor ben! I just had the same thing happen to me... found a low hour, original 78 15hp at an estate sale for $80. Changed the LU oil and fired up on the second pull and it runs like it did when it was brand new. I'm kinda tempted to put a carb kit in it to get rid of the cork float (assuming it's still there because of the black bowl gasket), but at the same time, it runs so well that I'm not sure if I should. I always run non ethanol gas and good oil. Along with stabil at the end of each season... I'm kinda torn, what do you think?

Thank you Kyle. This really is a Sweetheart of a motor. My friend really scored on this one. You REALLY scored with your 15. I saw your motor on FB. What a beauty. If it is running and starting like it should, I would just leave the carburetor alone unless you need to replace the fuel lines. I have never seen a cork float in one of these carburetors. I have only had a few of them apart. Maybe they did use cork in them, but all I have had apart have had the PEEK foam floats. I only use ethanol free fuel too. Sometimes I can't help myself and just go thru the carb just to be sure. Thanks for watching!

@@kyledevries4423 Yes, I must agree with the philosophy of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" in the case of.your motor. This one too. It got gear oil and a new impeller amd it still runs like a top. It is possible they did use cork floats in these. I have just never seen one that was. I have had four (I think) of these carbs apart and have yet to see one with a cork float. 👍

A 15hp carb will get you more power on the top end. The idle quality sometimes suffers a bit. You will not make a 15hp out of a 9.9 with only a carb swap. There are other factors involved. That is, however, the biggest increase you will get out of swapping a single item on the engine. Thanks for watching!

This boat is a Sea Nymph 14R. It weights about 180lbs as an empty hull. I'm around 260lbs. This 9.9 will push me at about 19mph in this boat with just myself and a fuel tank. Thanks for watching.

Great videos! Do you have any recommendations for trimming this motor? Where you running it high or all the way down?

I ran it all the way down in this video because I'm running it in my small backyard pond. Not much room to run, so I ran it in this position to allow it to plane off more quickly. This setting would not allow for the best top speed if I were on a lake. Trim is always subject to the boat and how it is loaded. Ideally the A/V plate should be parallel to the water's surface while the boat is underway. I usually start with the A/V plate parallel to the bottom of the boat if it is lightly loaded. If it is bow-heavy or carrying a front passenger you would typically trim out a bit from neutral position. if the boat is stern heavy, it may require trimming in to plane off. Its always a bit of trial and error to get it just right, but you get a feel for it after a while. Thanks for watching.

I believe on the '79 model the only difference is the carburetor. Some later models changed the exhaust tuner tube along with the carb. I have heard the reed stops were also different on some years, but I have not compared all the parts lists. Simple answer is yes, they use the same block, crankshaft, and pistons so they can be tuned to the same specs as the 15hp model. Thanks for watching!

No mods at all. This is a super-low-hour nearly like new 1979 9.9 with a new set of spark plugs. It is a strong motor. My 1979 Evinrude 15 will leave it behind though. Thanks for watching Bill!

If your prop hub is slipping you can be sure you’re on. Rey limited time on that water pump. Change immediately.

Well, the prop and the water pump have been replaced now. I don't see what the water pump has to do with the prop hub slipping though. They're two completely independent things and the water pump turns with the drive shaft. It runs regardless of whether or not the prop is even present.

That IS a beauty, he will enjoy it for many years....I worry about one of those larger engines popping off your transom! Loosen that starter bolt just slightly so you can get a light spray oil nozzle between the plastic pulley and spring, give it a couple of squirts, that stiff spring grease will loosen right up...

kramden It is a SUPER-NICE motor and it will be a very nice one for him to use for a long time. I will do exactly what you suggested for the rewind. That was the first time it didn't want to retract. Those bigger motors get the clamp screws cranked down and the safety chain connected before the get blasted into a hard turn in the backyard pond. I have a habit of keeping my transom clamps tight anyway, even with the smaller motors. Even the 18s don't begin to slide. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comments Don. It depends on motor condition and your location. Around me these motors in this condition sell often for between $650 and $900. 15's in this nice of condition will sometimes fetch $1000+. You will see them for less needing work but if they are boat ready with no issues they will be in this range. Thanks for watching!

@@omarflores493 The Sea Nymph 14R hull weighs around 170lbs. The rear 1/3 of the hull is quite flat and it planes fairly easily. It does get tougher to push after 20 mph or so. I managed to get 27.3 mph in this boat with my '54 Johnson RD-16 25hp this summer. If your Sylvan is a true V-hull all the way to the stern, it will take more power to push at that speed. It will handle and ride better though. I had a Starcraft deep V-hull with a flat plywood floor. My '86 Mercury 25XD would only get that boat to about 21mph. It pushes this boat at a little over 26mph.
