MSG Network had a condensed version of this game on a few years ago (MSG Vault show). This version is even better! Thank you! Love hearing Jim Gordon and The Big Whistle! I had my right leg amputated in early 1979. Around that time, I was gifted a get well card and an autographed hockey stick signed by the Rangers. I started watching and a fan was born! I still have both items to this day.

I had my school friends over the house on this one and it was the best day of my life with this win, especially going to school the next day and smiling at all the fair weather islander fans. Man, those were great series all into the 80’s between islanders and rangers, you looked forward to each game throughout the season. Now, forget it, hockey on different channels and just lost interest.

Organist-Toby Wright. He was the Islanders original Organist from 1972-76. He did both the Rangers and Islanders at the same time. This was Toby's last game as a sports organist. He died over the summer due to a massive heart attack performing at the Waldorf Astoria.

The Rangers robbed us from the Stanley Cup Final that the Hockey World wanted to see. The End of One Dynasty and the Beginning of Another. At least the Rangers could have played against Montreal like they did against the Isles. Instead, it was like they won their cup and they crapped the bed against the Canadiens.
@epaddon10 ай бұрын
Actually it should have been Rangers vs. Bruins but for the "Too many men on the ice" debacle. And then it would have been Ratelle/Park against Esposito in the ultimate test of who came out the better in the biggest trade of the decade.
@bauerpowerca10 ай бұрын
@@epaddonYou are right. The Bruins were so close to pulling the huge upset. All in all, 1979 was a great time to be a Hockey Fan.

The Rangers would still have to wait until 1994. It's 2023 and the Rangers have won only one Cup in 83 yeaqrs. NONE Since Jim Dolan owns the team.

Organist-Toby Wright-First organist of the Yankees. Was the Islanders organist from 1973-6. He also did the Rangers during that period. Wright created the iconic "Let's Go Islanders" Chant. He passed way in the summer of 1979. He had left sports after the hockey season. This game would be Toby's last hockey game ever. He suffered a massive heart attack while performing on stage with a band at the Waldorf Astoria. Eddie Layton handled the Stanley Cup Finals at the Garden.

1:07:40 Eddie Westfall was not available for this game. Bad ankle. He retired as a player after this series. He had played only 55 games that season with only 5 goals. He was scratched after game 2 of the series.

For The Rangers this was payback for 1974-5 when JP Parise beat Ed Giacomin 11 seconds into the overtime, 4-3. Giacomin was released by Emile Francis and Detroit picked him up. Gilles Villemure was traded to Chicago and Emile Francis traded for John Davidson. When Giacomin faced the Rangers the Garden was solidly behind him. The Rangers were booed. Davidson played that game and the fans were vicious to him. This game made Davidson a hero. The Islanders would win the Stanley Cup the next year, the next after that, the next after that and a fourth after that. 19 straight playoffs series wins.
