I live in Pennsylvania the regional competition in 1979 was held at Hyner View State Park. That year the Electra-Flyer Olympus kites dominated then competition taking the top three spots on the podium. The next year in 1980 The Comets swept the competition at Hyner. Shortly after that I bought a Comet that I flew to 1995. Still have the Glider. BTW I won the regionals in 1979, never won a damn thing after that

...thank you for sharing that remarkable footage...wow, those pilots were brave, flying those older gliders and landing so near obstacles etc, going to uprights at last moment, etc.

Too cool! I never flew Pine Flats before, but did get an awesome 4 1/2 hr. flight at Crestline, earlier that year. I probably would have been in this video, flying my Cirrus 5, but I was traveling around the country and missed my invitation. Good times traveling, though.

Awesome.... the bad old days. That’s when hang gliding was dangerous and sex was safe. Fond memories for me. Deflexors, six inch wing bolts, plastic saddle tube spacers.... there hardly a day that I didn’t draw blood setting up or breaking down.

@rmmmm This was my last year to live in Southern Cal, and I can remember putting on the Regionals. I also had a brand new Bennett Lazor, which was introduced in 1979. They are the wings that consitently are whacking hard on landing. There was no way to tell when to flair these wings. Granted their are some older wings, but his was a regionals, and all the locals showed up with gliders that were a little dated.

Those old Seahawks were fun to fly! Still have one! Recognized the UP Comet? And a Phoenix, Wills Wing XC, Manta Fledgling, yeah those triple deflexors!

I'm pretty sure that was the Nationals. The "Tut Fliers" were from somewhere back east. And we launched the Regionals from the launch currently called, for some peculiar reason, "Regionals launch", not Pine Flats.

I was thinking the same. The last days were at the Little league. I wind dummied the Nationals

Ha ha I was trying to see if old friends like Bob Nagy or the MacKenzies were in this video. I didn't start flying there until around 1988.

are you sure that was 1979? most of those gliders look like 1976 to 1977 tops.
