Dodge St Regis

Finally got around to making a walk around video for the R body enthusiasts among us. Didn't realize there were more than me out there. Car is a 1980 model Dodge St Regis, 318 2V, A/C car. It is almost a dead ringer for the car featured in the 1980 catalog. Few built, fewer survive. Most were destroyed in TV series. Watch "Hammer" "TJ Hooker" and The A-team to see them abused and destroyed!

People yell and scream about the build quality of these cars. Honestly, nearly every American car from the late 70s into the early 80s used the cheapest plastics, chrome, etc available and pretty much nothing had 'good' fit and finish. The 81 R cars were updated with better quality control, better rust resisting primers and paints and switched to the high strength steel bumpers to stop the chrome peeling problems. Other than that, it's really just a lengthened 78 B sedan chassis with a new boxy body. I drove a very worn out 79 NY 1 time with the 360 2bbl. It was converted from the ESC to early 70s style regular electronic ignition, and it actually ran very well, smooth. And it pretty much drove like any late 70s B sedan, which means pretty soft, a bit of wander, touchy brakes. But what stopped me from buying that car was the fact that pretty much everything inside the car squeaked and rattled so badly, it made me nuts. Even the frt seats were loose. I'd LOVE to find a police model that hasn't been hammered into the ground!

I don't get why they didn't make these for long. I don't see what they lack when compared to something like an Oldsmobile of the same time period.

They didn’t sell very well. And they wanted to slim down and focus on more fuel efficient cars. The M body took over as the big car at Chrysler.

The were introduced just before the Shah of Iran was over thrown and gas prices when from 65 cents a gallon to over a dollar a gallon in weeks. If this car had come out two or three years earlier along with the '77 Chevrolet Caprice and Impala, it would have been better appreciated.

Excellent new videos! I'm like you a fan of this car. I own a Dodge Coronet 1975 which is somehow the previous generation. I'm a potential buyer for this car if you decide to sell it and if we agree on a raisonnable price. My contact profile on Intagram is dukeboy876. Anyway, congratulation for your very good choice. The police hub caps and the Federal Signal Fireball II Beacon fit perfectly to this model. It's a pitty that the production of this car was so short (3 little years) espacially if we compare with the other full size sedan of the competition: 1996 for the GM Group and 2011 for the famous Ford Crown Victoria !

I worked for a Dodge dealership back then. The St Regis was a failed attempt of a luxury car. At this time it was the top of the line Dodge. Just a cheap quality built car with cheap parts.

What horrible cars. For some reason they look like they were just put together from the spare parts bin. What happened to the beautiful Mopar big cars from the 60’s and 70’s? Probably government regulations. Still Chrysler could surely have come up with a better looking design.
