My 1996 GoldWing had 88,000 miles on the dial when I bought it a couple of months ago...A few days ago, I was talking to a guy on the 'net and he said his Wing just clocked up 800,000 miles. He decided it might be time to give the motor an overhaul....he was amazed to find that the only things that needed to be replaced were the piston rings. Pretty reliable motor... Cheers

Your doing a great job! I learn alot from you! I got a 1978 Honda Goldwing GL 1000 and it runs perfect...Only has 24500 miles on it! I really enjoy it and feeling the wind!

I have a 81 GL 1100 with 500,000 miles on it. I paid 1200 bucks for it. It's probably the best 1200 bucks I've ever spent. Just do regular maintenance on it and they'll run forever.

Wow...1.4 million miles?! I guess I got some driving to do. I just bought an 81 GL1100, 1 owner, garage kept, dealer serviced with records for $1100.00, and when I picked it up it had 13,992 original miles. It's sat for the last 8 years, started regularly, serviced yearly. The old man said, "it's always been big for him and since an injury completely unmanagable", and his wife wanted an RV and the down for the one they wanted was $1100.00, so he sold it. I'm still having a hard time believing it.

@ALAINJANIE Bear in mind the 15w40 has to be changed every 1000 miles for air cooled and every 1500 miles for water cooled engines -- Aint like car engines that run at 1/2 the RPMS ... Generally if I am adding Marvel to the oil it's either during a "flush it" oil change (less than 1/2 hour run time - then changing again) or if I suspect the seals might be old enough to be brittle - add 1/8 pint for every quart of crankcase oil and give it a gentle run to let it work into the seals

Thats a nice bike my grandfather has a 1975 model almost just like that he gave up on it got a new bike i think ill take him up on his offer for the old girl. Just needs brakes unseized and carb cleaning. It will be my first "Legal" bike lol

I keep a notebook with a list of every part I have bought for her (and a different notebook for each of my other bikes).. While I dont log oil changes I do write down the mileage when I replace parts and keep receipts- This ones receipts fill a shoebox (mostly tires).

I built a new harness for my 1980gl1100 standard everything is working well with the exception of the front and back turn signals none of them are working. Before I rip open my harness to look for the problem does anyone have any suggestions?

My 1980 Wing has 17k...yea, that's 17,000 miles. It was in storage for many years before I got it & got it runniug. I've added 3k on myself. I have a video posted, called Smooth Goldwing....runs like a Honda!! Enough said!

Not to be a downer or anything. But I would like to point out that the mileage on the speedometer reads in 10's of thousands. NOT hundreds of thousands, like cars and trucks do. the white number at the end is a tenth of a mile. So for you to have 1,000,000 miles on your GoldWing you would have had to flip the numbers 10 times. I have a trucker buddy that logged 1,000,000 miles driving over the road and that took him 15 yrs to do driving 8-10hrs a day 5 days a week. Realistically you have 200,000 plus miles on your bike. Which is still extremely impressive and it looks amazing!!! Hope you are having good luck with your shop!!!

Kept logs - got reciepts for all the major parts - didnt keep oil reciepts or nothing though - averaged 250miles a day for quite a few years there

Thanks, you helped me lean more towards the goldwing. So you have m ost after market parts for the "80 1100 GW? How much would you charge for shipping to Ohio? Or would you ship to Ohio? Cause if not, once I get my GW, I just might be persuaded to to take a roadtrip and come to your place and pick up the part. Good way to "break in" my "new" bike.
@dawino626011 жыл бұрын
I make folks order in and gather all their parts before they bring the bike - But yes I do stuff for folks from all over. Most of the US ones are using uship or Interstate - I think its 5 to 700 either direction... Fork brace wise Telefix is still in business google telefix fork brace. rest of the parts just call for a list after you have picked the bike

I'm buying a 1980 wing, or maybe a vulcan meanstreak, but i'm kind of looking a second time at the goldwing. The store owner where i'm getting the bike from says it's top heavy; but that'sonly when it's standing still I assume. What do you like about yours as apposed to a new one which I understand is even bigger than the old ones.

I can flip em around with the best of the sport tourers - i strongly recommend an aftermarket fork brace to eliminate the low speed flex -- but these are low cg enough the fairing doesn't affect even low speed handling as bad as people think -- Beemer flying brick (K100) Vs GL1200 The wing handles about the same and you aren't wore out at the end of the day the gl1100's are a little lesser handling but not much

Did I hear you correctly, 1.1 million miles? I did not think it was possible for any engine to cover that many miles without any major engine rebuild. Surely it must have had some engine overhaul at some point in its life. Those cam belts for example need replacing every so often, otherwise one could break, leading to valve gear damage.
@dawino626010 жыл бұрын
Yup - on stock pistons anyway - she'd had the heads redone once - change you oil every 1000 miles on the 1000 and they last forever....

@garydunn303710 жыл бұрын
dawino6260 So, it must have had new rings at some point, but that still takes some believing to cover 1.1 million miles without any real major work to the engine. I agree with your suggestion on changing the oil every 1000 miles. I've owned 8 bikes, and did this with all of them, and non of them ever let me down.

Doesn't that white dial indicate 10th's of a mile. That bike has 143,000 miles, not 1.4 million!!!!

Who would want to work on bikes for only $25 an hour ...oh wait this 2011 video....maybe .....but even then $25 is NOT enough for going home filthy with busted up hands and shit ...I THOUGHT I wanted to be an MC mechanic because I truly love motorcycles ....I went to school , learned the trade and then discovered what a shit deal it was.....basically a shop takes half of what is charged to the customer and in my case I did not get a dime extra for selling all those parts ....the worst part of the deal was warranty work which is based off a manufacturer's "flat rate" schedule where every mechanical operation has a flat rate time allotted ....you can take as long as it takes you but you only get PAID for the flat rate time ....as an example of what a shit deal it was back in the day? Kawasaki Z1 900cc dohc 4 cylinder Kawakaki flat rate manual gave 8 hours PERIOD to R+R the engine AND yank the top end AND split the cases ....Out , apart, back together and installed and running EIGHT HOURS! Damn some bikes come in so filthy it takes at least and hour cleaning before you dare touch it with a wrench! And you can easily spend an hour or two measuring shit and writing down part numbers and writing everything up you have to do /did do....maybe in a factory setting with all brand new stuff under perfect scenario with high speed tools all laid within easy reach ....rehearsed ...maybe ....but just an average mechanic? HA! NOT gonna happen! Not even! ....So what do mechanics do (or what wa done way back when?) LIE! Make up fake repairs that dont get done just trying to break even ....cut corners on services...ANYTHING just to make it all come out so you can make payments to Snap On and buy groceries another week.....crappy career if you ask me. Would have to be on a winning race team or something I recon for it to be as good a job as other mechanical jobs that pay MUCH MUCH better! Personally I became an electrician after that ....way cleaner work that paid quite well ....AND I did not even have to eat my mistakes ....see that is the other thing about being a mechanic ...you eat all your mistakes....put something on wrong in a tranny or leave out a shim or some dumb thing? The whole motor comes back out, split the cases and put it all back together FREE as your other jobs back up with unhappy customers ...meaning you just can not afford to make mistakes
@dawino62605 жыл бұрын
And now you know why I mostly worked on my own ... buy sell trade build ... make sure everything works and is right as it can be before it leaves ... it's the only way the business is enjoyable ...

Got an '81 just like it same color to boot. Getting ready to pass 100,000 in 44 more miles. Speedometer only shows 100 thousand don't know how you figure 1.1 Million. That means the clock has zeroed out ten times. You're showing 43,379 and 3/10's miles. Likely flipped once but you never know on these bikes I'd figure 143,379
@dougiequick15 жыл бұрын
The one guy named Emilio Scotto? something or other like that rode his '80 Gold Wing around the world plus plus plus through so many countries! ......like half a million miles but the engine of course his gold wing DID die and he DID have to replace the motor ....one time anyway.

I've owned her since nov. 1979 every oil change, part and piece logged in a notebook. she's been my daily driver/parts go getter/got me back and forth to work 90 miles each way when I lived in Mexifornia/all around bike .. i ride the others too.. but this one was the first one I bought brand new - got to put her together straight out of the crate myself.
