Thanks for watching everyone! There's some titles that were left off of the lists, plus we cover both Atlantic City and Superman II here due to their Europe releases, but we'll cover them in a 1981 video too.

I am digging the hell out of this. Also love the attention paid to the fact that decades really don't begin for pop culture until about the 3rd or 4th year of the decade. Everything prior is tangential leftovers from the prior decade due to project development.

@MrNilssonTheMonkey You could make the argument. But, the pattern is there. The bigger argument would be what is considered indicative of the time vs. timeless. Even the nature of a timeless film begets so much else.

As the films were shot in 1979 that would be the case. Although American Gigolo is a very 80's film. I would also point out Video Killed The Radiostar, a very 80's song and music video was released in 1979.

You know, when I was a kid in the 80’s. I never thought all those fantastic films would end one day. Sure there were stinkers released, but you would have at least two or three choices of amazing movies. Now it’s a miracle if there’s more than one movie that gets me to the theater. Cinema needs a stiff injection of originality, and risk. Support independent art people!

Agree, but I can’t tell if the 80s movies were better, or if movies you see as a tween/teen just seem better, before you know all the tropes and everything looks looks unoriginal.
@endymallorn
@endymallorn 3 жыл бұрын
@@Itried20takennames Probably a little of both. Look at Blues Bros. vs Blues Bros. 2K. One had great ideas, a solid cast in their prime, and was unafraid to just shoot the money. Caddyshack is similar in that vein, and whether you prefer Star Wars or Empire is a matter of preference, but either one is better than any of the sequel trilogy. Originality, fearlessness, and a stronger sense that the director, the crew, and the the cast control the movie instead of the producers and the money guys helps a lot.

Don't support independent blindly either. Streaming services are flooded with low-budget, low-effort films that are insults to filmmaking themselves. We need originality for sure but indie films are not the bastion they once were. Streaming has muddied the waters significantly.

Thanks so much for producing these. They are genuinely entertaining with some fantastic gags in the script, it's obvious a lot of thought and effort want into them. But as a life long movie buff these are giving me so much more. I was 15 in 1980 in the UK and me and a dedicated group of friends were slap bang in the middle of the home video recorder boom. We'd be at the local rental shop at least 3 times a week and were already hyper movie snobs by this time. The trailers & posters for all the films we decided to pass on is bringing back so many memories I've lost count. But also you've given me a to do list of films I passed on at the time but now really want to see. You've no idea what a gift you've given me, even considering contacting my old best friend who I've not seen for 10 years to join me in the project. Great work man and long may it continue.

I actually taught myself how to roller skate because of Olivia Newton John's character in Xanadu. I thought was so cool. My Dad & I would watch Flash Gordon every time it aired on tv. Same for Popeye. We only had 5 channels on a smal I enjoyed spending time with him. Just hanging out & watching movies. Thank you for triggering some good memories for me. It was really nice. Epic overview! 2 things about The Gong Show Movie. 1 - It was partially directed by Robert Downey, Sr. but was let go halfway through by Barris. 2 - Contrary to legend, The Gong Show Movie had a full 2 week release in most markets, as most theaters were contractually obligated by Universal to show it. It also had a healthy run as a drive in supporting feature.

I thought Superman 2 didn't come out in the US until Summer 81.

@@davidjames579 it's confusing. It was released ovetseas in '80, yet we didn't get it here in the states until a year later. I still have no idea how that happened, but most consider it a 1980 film

@@lifeispuzzling It also happened with Supergirl. Released Summer 1984 in the UK, and Xmas 84 in US (in an edited down version).

The Donner Cut we got was ok, but it wasn't really the movie Donner would have made had he been allowed to finish it at the time. They used a Christopher Reeve's screen test (that appeared on the original DVD for Superman The Movie), awkwardly inserted for the crucial scene in which Lois finally reveals Clark's identity. Its a better idea than what made the theatrical version, but its not a finished scene and simply doesn't work. I also didn't care for the repeat of the turning back the earth ending, even if it was always intended for the second movie. They should have restored the original ending of 1, which would have had Superman flying Lex's rocket into space and freeing Zod and company.

1:36:26 Is that Mario VanPeebles? I had no idea he was also in the first Exterminator! (as a momentary extra, I imagine) I do know that Samuel L Jackson is an uncredited extra in the movie.

I'm looking forward to the 1982 edition, where we can all make fun of the critics who hated The Thing because its tone was bleaker than the PG sci-fi kids movie that came out two weeks prior!

That's going to take awhile. Lol But tbf, I didn't love it the first time I saw it either. That was back in 97 and I watched it with a couple of friends, in the summer. We were drinking, smoking weed and talking. So we were not fair to the film. I landed up buying it, on DVD, in 06 and watched it alone, in the dark, during a January Snowstorm. I live in Montreal Canada and that night, it might as well have been the Artic. That's when I realised what I had missed. Mood, Atmosphere, suspense and a Who goes there, what was that noise, feeling ;) Today, it's my favorite Horror film, tied with The Shining. To anyone out there, watching these 'classics' for the first time, watch the film alone and watch it twice! You never know what you may have missed. Cheers from Canada
