1980 NFC Wildcard - Rams at Cowboys - Enhanced CBS Broadcast - 1080p/60fps

I've enhanced the 1980 Wildcard game between the Rams and Cowboys. The original source recording for this project was in pretty nice shape. Probably an over-the-air recording, but picture was pretty stable without much noise at all. I upscaled it to 1080p, doubled the framerate to 59.94, reduced the compression, and sharpened the picture with Topaz. Thing is, the original broadcast looked and sounded pretty good.... But then the sources for full game footage are usually from consumer recorded VHS. Even the NFL's older Superbowl uploads appear to not be from first Gen broadcast master tapes... With the possible exception of the 1990 Superbowl which look very sharp.

Wonderful trek back in time.! The Seattle @ Oakland 1979 finale would be another gem to find.! A Raider win puts them back in the postseason as an AFC Wild Card. Alas, 79 was the final charge in Oakland for Ken Stabler, Dave Casper & Jack Tatum. All three would be in Houston in 1980. 🏈

My dad had Rams season tickets all through the 60’s and 70’s at the Coliseum on the 50 yard line and Jonathan Winters sat right behind us. Glenn Campbell, Andy Williams and Cal Worthington (Go See Cal) sat nearby. When the Rams moved to Anaheim I took over the seats and I was in my early 20’s. I split the four seats with a friend, it’s hard to believe how affordable they were 40 years ago compared to today.

In Super Bowl 14 Vince Ferragamo had a wide open Billy Waddy streaking towards the end zone having beaten his coverage and literally did not see him and the six points. I remember the interviews where he just could not really explain it except just to say he did not see him. No one really thought anything of it at the time and we told ourselves it's a one time freak occurrence. But as some more time went by it was clear that Vince Ferragamo did not have the vision of the field that the top top shelf level quarterbacks have. After they tried to sort out their differences with Vince Ferragamo and his salary following the 1982 season the Rams in the offseason during the first half of 1983 had an unbelievable opportunity because in the April draft Dan Marino was still sitting there with just a few more picks remaining in the first round. Yes it would have been costly and they could probably write off having first and second picks for 1984 but some were not sold on Marino, there was a reason he was there ,so it would not be quite as costly as some think. There was nobody in the 1984 draft more important Dan Marino and the overall roster they already had screamed we need a top level quarterback. With their new pick for 1983 Eric Dickerson and with Dan Marino in the same backfield imagine the possibilities. Eric Dickerson 's numbers would not be as great but I'm pretty confident he would at least have one ring as would Marino. A few games into the 1983 season the Rams hosted the dolphins and Marino completely outclassed Vince Ferragamo on what was only his as I remember 4th or 5th start.

In my '83 re-draft he goes to the Raiders, backs up Plunkett for his first ring then takes over and wins a couple more with Marcus Allen (in his prime) and that defense. Ferragamo threw an interception on that play also. That was a wide open touchdown to Waddy & the Rams would've led that superbowl late in the game. Marino slipped in the draft bc of his "partying" in his last year with the Pitt Panthers. His hometown Steelers needed at qb & passed on him. The Dolphins didn't need Marino. They had David Woodley who was the youngest ever starting qb in the superbowl & Don Strock who was one of the best backups. The Rams bought the hype of Dieter Brock from the CFL whom they say had a 90 yard arm

@@mongoslade277 after the 1982 strike shortened season ended the Rams had to admit they made a terrible error with Bert Jones and who could have known that at age 31 he had already hit the wall. The hype the Rams truly bought preparing for the 1983 season was that Vince Ferragamo if he returned to the Rams was going to become the 1980 Vince Ferragamo and even better. The fans were all eager for his return and the organisation knew it. It was a popular move to appease the fans and the Rams absolutely ignored completely Vince ferragamo's absolutely mediocre play with the buffalo Bills for 1982. Following the 1984 season is when they bought into the Dieter Brock hype for one season. In a few short years with Dickerson gone they brought in charger assistant Ernie Zampezee to install the Don Coryell offence. Making this bold move for Marino does mean a conflict in which the organisation has to tell John Robinson his USC system is not even remotely coming over. That's what they eventually tell him anyway in a few years. They can pull the quarterback coach for Dan Marino and the offensive coordinator from either the Chargers or Redskins. Giving up draft capital for 1984 probably means no Olympic medallist Ron Brown. They can deal.

Rams defense ran out of gas in the second half, Dallas sensed it and took it to 'em! Dallas' D kept the Rams O in check the whole game. This game was the beginning of the end of the Knox/Malavasi 1970s Ram team. 1981 the whole thing blew up, '82 was a disaster, and Robinson was HC in '83, the year they beat Dallas again. lol

@@riggodrill Excuse me? He took the Cowboys to 3 straight NFC championship games. That means he won playoff games. He led comeback victories in two different playoff games, and only Joe Montana's heroics (the Catch) kept them out of the 1981 SB. One of the comebacks, in 1978, was when Staubach got hurt and knocked out of the game against Atlanta, and Danny played brilliantly in the 2nd half. The 2nd one was the week after this game, when he threw a game winning TD to Drew Pearson with less than 2 minutes to go. Staubach didn't win every playoff game, either, and got his hat handed to him a few times, as well. Danny White was a damn fine QB, a great punter, and a fine man. Ferragamo isn't in his class as far as their careers in the NFL. White - 62-30 as a starter, 155 TDs and 132 INTs, 59.7 comp %, and almost 22,000 yards Ferragamo - 27-26, 76 TDs 91 INTs, 55.9%, just over 11,000 yards... and he couldn't punt Peace

@@comfortat All valid points. And no doubt... Danny White was a superior NFL starting QB compared to Vince Ferragamo, over the long run. And I don't besmirch Danny White's character one bit. That was a tough task taking over for America's QB and being coached by Tom Landry (remember alternating Morton and Staubach?!?!?!) I do think Danny White underperformed in some key games (vs. Rams late season 80, Redskins late season 83, 84 - Rams 85 playoffs), though he didn't ALWAYS underperform. And that is why I was drawing a comparison to Ferragamo. He had all the tools. But didn't get to the SB whereas Ferragamo did. Perhaps I should have edited my comment to say "... especially in big games" rather than single out playoffs. He did get it done in the games you mentioned. The dividing line with QBs is certainly getting to the Super Bowl (NFL and AFL Championship games, pre-merger). Dallas still had overwhelming talent in the 1980 - 1984 time frame but failed to return to the SB. Was it because of Danny White? Not solely. But, his play in some games was a factor. Donovan McNabb went to 4 straight NFC Championship games and even managed to get to the SB. I'd still rate McNabb below top level of his contemporaries and I'd rate Danny White, though a great athlete, really solid NFL QB and fine man, too... I'd rate him below the top level of his contemporaries. As a Redskin fan (born in DC in 65), I was socialized to hate Dallas. While I did strongly dislike them, I had a lot of respect and admiration for them. Including Danny White. John Madden's first playoff game as an analyst. People forget he joined CBS and worked with various play-by-play voices during the 1980 season before splitting duties with Pat Summerrall and Vin Scully for the 1981 regular season before it was decided Madden would work with Summerrall with Scully leaving CBS after the 1981 season (but not before calling first what was the biggest football game in New York since Super Bowl III to that point in Packers-Jets at Shea in December 1981 that put the Jets AND Giants into the playoffs for the first time since the '60s in both cases and "The Catch" by Dwight Clark in the 1981 NFC Championship game in what turned out to be his final-ever NFL broadcast and doing Golf for CBS during 1982).

Actually in 1980 except for week 1 he worked with Gary Bender for every game. In week 1 he worked with Dick Stockton ad Gary Bender worked with Tom Brookshier due to Pat Summerall covering the US Open Tennis Tournament. In 1979 Madden worked with a variety of partners.

I think this is the first game I remember watching, but obviously I had watched others before, but I was only 8 yrs old at the time. I remember we had a school assignment to write a few pages about something, so I wrote it about this game, even made a cover sheet for it and used a blue pen to write “Cowboys 34, Rams 13.” It’s really great to see these old games, and you’ve done a great job with the restoration. Very interesting to see the different broadcasters and play callers and how their style contrasts with today’s. Jimmy the Greek looks half in the bag. Love hearing John Madden, grew up on him, even into adulthood with him calling games. I love the players’ jerseys and the bigger shoudler pads too.

I was 12 years old when this game played, born in Pacoima, CA. Mom was a big Cowboys fan, Dad was a Vikings fan, and i was a 49ers fan. Needless to say, there were numerous arguments when it came to football. I'm glad i lived in a time where Football was at its greatest. Today, i'm still a 49ers fan, but the games are not the same. There are too many players getting into some drama which doesn't help the game. Landry was a coach who came prepared for his opponent, never a mediocre game. Too bad Jerry Jones starts to destroy the Cowboys a few years later. Should have had a few more Super Bowls to their credit. R.I.P. Mr Madden, we miss you and your flair as a commentator, thank you for the years you gave us.

In time John Madden became the commentator I disliked far more than Howard Cosell. Recently I've watched much of the early 90s Cowboys games and often I mute them just so I don't have to hear Motormouth Madden who was consistently wrong 3 to 4 times per game. But in this game he hasn't become the big ginger bag of hot air he would become. I was pleasantly by how restrained and professional John is at this time. The later John I loathed. This John is OK.

I have never understood how talking heads can look at slo-mo and not see. Aaron Mitchell did not lateral, he clearly handed the ball to Dennis Thurman. At 2:22:31 Aaron still has one hand on the ball before Dennis takes off running. And both talking heads are blathering on about a lateral. At no time was the ball in the air.

Seems to me these old games had much fewer penalties and rules than today. The refs just let them play. After almost every play in todays there is some review or a penalty.

Wow this is great. I think this was pretty early on in John Madden's career in the booth. Great to hear him again. I was too young to really remember anything from this era, but I was pretty impressed with how well Ferragamo threw the ball. Also I just always felt that people, Dallas fans mostly, were very negative about Danny White. He really was a very good QB and a top notch punter as well. I feel like in todays game, from a viewing prespective, the heads up display has so much information that the guys in the booth take that for granted and babble on and on about other things and it gets a bit annoying. I could take the audio of this video and get a great visual image of what is going on. Really enjoyed this.

In fact, this was Madden’s very first playoff game as a commentator, and one of only two playoff games he called without Pat Summerall or Al Michaels. In January 1991, Madden and Verne Lundquist called a Saints-Bears wild card game, one week before Summerall returned from a medical leave (he’d nearly died from a bleeding ulcer).

White was very good, but couldn’t win an NFC Championship game in 3 consecutive tries. Was very immobile and often .prone to fumbling when sacked. I watched almost every game he played from 1981 onward.
