In this video I introduce my 81 Fiat Sport Spider to my channel with the hopes to begin sharing how to videos about the cars maintenance. There aren't a lot of videos online, nor are there a lot of sources/forums on the maintenance of this vehicle. I hope to try my best to get the most accurate information and processes so I can share that information with you all.

I had an '81 with basically the same spec-red and tan, the toggle that moves the side view mirror. My girlfriend in college had a steel blue '81 which just made her even cooler in my eyes. We married and, in 1990, she surprised me with my red one. I drove it for 15 years-it had 285,000 miles on it when I donated it to the local PBS station. The engine is indestructible. The wiring...not so much. International Auto Parts was my go-to catalog for all my replacement parts. They were purchased by Centerline Alfa and you can now get basically any part through their subsidiary, autoricambi.us. I loved that car. Still love the girl :)

My first car in highschool, same color combination, mine was an 82, my parents bought it for me in 86, graduated in 87, and drove it through college, I loved that car so much....I drive an 06 Mazda MX5, much more reliable than the Fiat I have to say, but same general feeling when driving them...

Please make more of these DIY videos! I am just starting out so I wont be dropping any engines. It would be great if you could make more for us newbies. (Changing brakes,carb,muffler,shocks and clutch cable etc... etc..) You really explain things well with good angles to see how to. I'll be watching!

I'll definitely be doing more videos, unfortunately I probably won't be dropping any engines either.... Don't have a shop crane! 😔 I should have a video on brakes but on a different car, probably going to do a video on shocks later this year on my Caddi. Who knows what else! Just bought a house so I've been very tied up! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT!

This car was on the top of my list when I was looking for a convertible during my college years but regrettably never owned one. Although nowadays there’s Z4, Boxter in my garage but I almost always choose to drive my ‘93 Alfa Romeo spider.

There is actually quite a large online community around these original Fiat 124/2000's. I have an '82 Fiat 2000, and have gained a tonne of knowledge from fiatspider.com, and mirafiori.com . Mirafiori has free digital downloads in their library for all the owners manuals, shop manuals, guides (tuning, engine, transmission, suspension, etc.). They even have copies of the original brochures, parts catalogues, etc. All free. Check it all out, and enjoy your great car!

Awwh man, thank you! I've been on fiatspider.com but never the other one. I'll definitely check it out. Fortunately I do have all of the manuals, etc...first owner did a great job with care.

Depends on condition. Mine is all original, no accidents, low miles. Probably $10,000 USD.

Nice vid! I actually work at Carmx. I don't think we'll ever see a car like this in our location. If you don't mind me asking what was the price for the car? I want to get an idea so I'm not over paying if i do find one online. TIA
@ikramnanlawala4843
@ikramnanlawala4843 3 жыл бұрын
I drastically underpaid for the car. As you know the offers at CarMax, generally, are fair. But on old cars that can't be valued by black book or don't have much of a market value, CarMax generally underpays. Older cars have a very niche market and are based on more of a collector value. So if you find one that's mint condition and all original, it may be $10k+. I paid $5.5k

Clean spider! I own an 81 for about 3 years and did a lot of work to it. Mine is an automatic and I noticed I can’t go over 60mph and if I do it’ll just kick back. I replace the headers and full exhaust pipe (straight pipe) I’m not what is the cause of that. Maybe you know or have an idea.

Thank you, and that's awesome we both have ours about the same duration of time now. My dad has wanted to convert this to an auto...NO! LOL! About the issue you are facing, I couldn't tell you. I have no clue. Have you looked in the forums and seen anything? I know it's hard there to sometimes, these things are so old and for some reason there aren't a lot of people with info on em, but it is worth a shot. You in or around the IL area?

I have almost the same car 1981 2000cc 5 speed standard in Lima, Perú; regarding the top speed I was informe by a mechanic that it is electrónically limited due to U. S. safe regulations back on the date of purchase being a convertible with no head bar protection.

@0:57 you mention a 5 speed automatic. That was a mis-speak right? Because that sure looks like a stick and you have (in the summary) your dad wanted to convert it to an automatic.

Yes, good catch! I went back to watch it real quick. As I was trying to talk about the other options (naturally aspirated like mine, turbo, or supercharged; 4 speed manual, 5 speed manual like mine, or 3 speed auto) it was available in I misspoke and meant to say 5 speed manual. He does want to convert it for my mom, not happening. Even she doesn't believe it is the right thing to do.

Original engines were 1.4 - 1.6 - 1.8, from 1966 to 1979. Then the Spider America (this one in the video) came with the 2.0 engine from 1979 (even if some were manufactured in late 1978 - like the one I own) By 1981 FIAT ceased marketing the 124 spider and from 1982 to 1985 the car has been manufactured and sold directly by Pinifarina under the name Spider Azzurra, always with the 2.0 engine and some minor changes in the interior and the exterior rearview mirror, this model was sold in the US only. The transmission was always a 5 speed since 1966. The infamous automatic was only available for the US or on special request in Europe (nobody wants a 124 spider with auto unless you can't actually drive manual) The turbo version was for the US only and if I recall was 1.8 Turbo with 135hp.

All of the information I gathered was through forums and minor research. Everything I saw shows Fiat manufacturing from 66-81 then from Pininfarina from 81-85. Weather made in Italy, America, or Japan....they show history of a 5 speed, a 4 speed, and an auto 3 speed. Also a 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.0 turbo, 2.0 supercharged! 79-82 marketed as the Spider 2000 and 83-85 Spider Azzura and Spidereuropa! This is info I gathered from research and forums, as I said. If I misspoke or was wrong about something....that's my bad.
