This medley in the summer of 1981 sent me into a Beach Boys music that has lasted even as I write this The genius way these songs a segue into each other, makes it easy to keep this on “repeat”

There’s a longer version of this that adds “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Little Honda,” “Hawaii,” “409,” “Noble Surfer,” and “Dance Dance Dance.”

I remember FM radio stations in markets were flipping to an Oldies format. I bet, this was released to sort of cash in on some of that airplay for that format. Another thing is that Capitol left all these songs in mono, not stereo, which was a bit disappointing. I find this record pretty good actually of all the nostalgic medleys that were released 81-83.

There was another one--by the Cantina Band this year.

Yes...that was another nice one called "Summer '81," which entered the Hot 100 on the same week as this posted "Beach Boys Medley."

I never understood the point of this release except for the fact that medleys of this nature were trending thanks to Stars on 45. This went top ten in two trades and top 15 in another. Never got any airtime here in Chicago. In fact "American Top 40" was the only place I ever heard it. Capitol did this with some of The Beatles' movie music and called it "The Beatles' Movie Medley", another useless cash grab by the company.

I remember the medley playing on WSTW (Wilmington, DE station, still on the air in 2024, and they played top 40, pop, rock, and oldies at the time) all the time, and I bought the record. They also played Beatles' medley and Stars on 45, got those singles too.

IIRC Motown tried to cash in on the fad when they released a Supremes medley on 45, and RCA released an Elvis medley of the more upbeat of his post-comeback special hits.

Not as bad as the medleys of old songs pulverised with a disco beat, but perhaps also more pointless as a result.

Whether or not you personally like it, it's called commerce. How was it a 'pointless' venture in 1981 for Capitol to release a new and skillfully-edited nostalgic medley such as this (filled with great 1960s memories) which so many of us enjoyed hearing that it became a Top 15 hit single on all three national charts?
