Witnessing this as a 12 year old. 77’ 78’ was a fog memory, but at twelve already well informed baseball historians. Fast forward 2013 a gentleman walked in at my work with an invoice receipt and name read Jay Johnstone. I made a comment to him that I knew a Jay Johnstone who played for the Dodgers. Though he’s much older at that time I did recognized him and I further commented, are you THE Jay Johnston pinch hitter specialist. He replied, that was me. For ten minutes we talked about that World Series. Asked for an autograph and he graciously obliged. As he walked away I still remember his gait as I watched him walk on a baseball field. RIP Jay Johnstone

In anticipation of this Friday's first game of the 2024 World Series, I came here to relive the 1981 Dodgers championship club's victory over The Yankees. 1981, one year out of high school, and after the heartaches of 1974 against the Oakland A's, plus 1977, and 1978 against The Yankees losing those three World Series was hard to bear. The Dodgers lost the first two games of the 1981 World Series, and we all thought, "Here we go again." But the Big Blue Wrecking Crew came back to win the next four games to take the crown. Looking forward to seeing The Dodgers and The Yankees battle it out starting this Friday. GO AZUL!

In the fall of '81, I was 23, and a longtime need to see the Dodgers finally beat the Yankees was fulfilled, which was a relief. Coupled with dismay over the '81 strike, the end of this series represented a moving on point for me. Baseball was more of a casual interest from this point.

That was a special World Series because the LA Dodgers won the world championship at the right time - when former governor of California Ronald Reagan was President! He loved watching sports. Quite a few California teams won championships during his time in office. In 1981, the Oakland Raiders had won Super Bowl 15. When the Dodgers won with Fernando Valenzuela, that was special. President Reagan is remembered well for his frequent habit of calling championship teams who won their respective titles in the NFL and NBA and MLB. That habit was actually started by President Carter who had invited the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates to the White House and called the 1980 US mens Olympic hockey team after they had won the gold medal at Lake Placid. After the Phillies had won the 1980 World Series, President Carter had called to congratulate their success. The Phillies manager Dallas Greene was surprised.

Tommy John was a Dodger in both 77 and 78, when losing to the Yankees, but in 1981, he was a Yankee that lost to the Dodgers. Just like with Jay Johnstone, like Vin Scully said, he was on the 78 Yankees and the only Dodger member that was on a World Series winner. He was on that 78 Yankees team that was down 0-2 to the Dodgers and came back and won 4 in a row. And in 81, it was reversed, Jay as a Dodger, down 0-2 to the Yankees and came back to beat them 4 straight.

@@roland7584 It's funny how this argument always comes back to the Dodgers. The Reds are always the only team mentioned in this criticism. Why should the Yankees have played the Reds and not the Cardinals? The Cardinals had the best overall record in the NL east. In fact, why should the Yankees have been playing either of those teams when the Yankees had THE FOURTH BEST overall record in the AL east? Please explain why only the Dodgers are criticized for this format. We both know there would have been zero criticism of the Yankees for this format had they won the World Series.
@roland758424 күн бұрын
@@IdolLord The Yankees are just as criticized. It was the perfect setup. The strike happened, and the 2 teams they needed in that moment in time to keep the fans from just shutting baseball off were set to be in the playoffs. The rest of the regular season wouldn't even matter if no fans showed up, because they already knew they could market the playoffs to them with the 2 biggest markets in the playoffs already. Don't try to look away as if the owners don't pull these stunts all the time when times are bad. They looked away when the steroids ran rampant throughout the league because that was the only thing keeping the fans interested in that block of time. If they put an end to steroids in 1995/96 (or before), you know the baseball recovery from the 1994 strike would have taken at least a decade because they had nothing else going for them. The league will always make sure the right players they can market are on 5 or 6 teams and the rest can fend for themselves. If the Rays owner had 1 billion dollars there's still no way Ohtani lands there under no circumstances in this point in his career, any more than Bonds was going to remain a Pirate back in the 90s.

Just out of curiosity, why were/are taxpayers paying players to endorse the armed forces? This is how you end up $200 trillion (seriously, after pensions and other obligations) in debt. There is absolutely no reason the military should be endorsed by players during peacetime. None. Zero.

I guess paid for patriotism was there long before September 11, 2001.

You obviously have no clue how budgets work

@burnhamsghost8044 I don't know how budgets work? Well, I won't cop to that but I will say, unlike 99% of Americans I have no money allocated to paying my installment debt. My house, my cars, and everything I own is paid for, and I have no credit cards. And you can give me all the Keynesian reasoning for debt being cheaper. I still don't know many people who don't end up declaring bankruptcy who have 60% of their income going to service their debt. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the French revolution started with debt management that is eerily similar to the government as it currently stands. But what would I know? I only have three degrees in finance and economics. But, by all means, explain it to me like I'm five years old.

@@Mr.MikeBarksdale you must be fun at parties. But in any case, before the military asked people to join, it used to force them.

@@burnhamsghost8044 Hey now, that was some sharp baseball analysis by him. I never heard Tony Kubek or Al Michaels explain how the French Revolution began during their World Series coverage!
