Thank you for posting this. Squire Shop was always my favorite team and boat. It was super sad to again see the Dean Chenoweth crash. I met him in Detroit, and like so many of the unlimited drivers, he was incredibly kind and fan-friendly.

Love these boats.. I went on the Detroit River to watch them every year from 1970 until 2018

I was there for that one. Rode the old Honda 750F over from Seattle and stayed in the "pen" the night before. Brief but nice shot of the Aronow Unlimited! (3:13)

Wow love those rare shots of the Aronow running. A lot of noise makers out there. Loved it!🏁😀

I was also on the Pasco side, shot a lot of pictures and remember the high winds and big chop on the river that day. Not a great racing day.

One correction from the video. Dean Chenowith was taken to the nearest hospital, Kennewick General, in the city of Kennewick where the pits are located. I was working just outside the pit entry that day. After hearing the collective gasp of the crowd, I looked up just in time to see the spray from the impact. It was only minutes later when the ambulance carrying Dean drove past; the atmosphere was like a funeral procession, although word of Dean's passing was yet to come. This race is usually the last weekend of July and it seems like every time it's run in August, something happens. In addition to the loss of Dean, as the video shows, high winds marred the final heat with top boats choosing to protect lives and equipment.

Pretty sure Dean was taken to Kennewick General Hospital as we were playing a baseball game across the street when he arrived-tragic for the Bud team but Bernie made it safer as a consequence & that might be his greatest impact on the sport. RIP Bernie Dean Bill & all the others who have their life to this great sport.

Hadn't gotten to your comment yet. Just dropped in to correct that and drop my memories from just outside the pits that day.

Nope nope nope, he wasn't on the water in Pasco. He got in the boat in Kennewick. No hydroplane driver has ever entered or left the race course from Pasco. Not once in almost 60 years.
