I've been thinking about it for a long time. What will my next motorcycle be? I love my Honda CRF250L and plan to keep it. But what is the next bike? I feel like it should be different enough to justify the purchase. I've been thinking about a more road oriented machine. In this video I share about a 1982 Honda GL500 Silverwing Interstate I am looking at. Should I buy it? I've had all kinds of advice. Some say the early 80's Silverwing is the perfect affordable touring bike. Some say it is junk and mention the "CX500 Triple Bypass". What do you think? Gem or Junk?

Hello! New subscriber. I started riding when I was 55. 63 now. The 2nd bike I bought was a 1982 Silverwing. I still have it and I still love it!! I also have a Goldwing that my wife and I usually ride 2-up, but the Silverwing has a special place in my heart.

I really liked it. I didn’t buy it for a variety of reasons but every time I see one it catches my eye and I wonder if I should’ve bought it.

I say go for it if the price is right. I've got a whole fleet of bikes and quads, it's a family affair lol. In fact my wife is in surgery this very minute for an ankle fracture from an atv rollover. My wife and all 4 of our children ride together on and offroad. The silverwing is definitely a gem!

It is an amazing bike!! I bought an 82 when I was 18 (without the faring) and moved (on it)from Ohio to Arizona to go to school. The engine is the easiest to work on of any vehicle I’ve ever owned and with semi regular maintenance it is bulletproof. I put over 70k miles on it exploring the west and several trips back home before selling it to my roommate (who was a 250lb rugby player) and he abused it and did almost no maintenance but he road it till it died with almost 160k miles on the odometer.

Wow!! That’s an awesome account of a happy Silverwing owner! I was thinking the transverse mounting of the twin would facilitate engine work. Thanks for watching!

If I were to get a road bike, I'm really intrigued by that Indian FTR like the one on the left in that group you met. If the price is right, that Silverwing might be a logical next step for you. Those swept handlebars would drive me nuts though.

I like that Indian FTR too! Very nice. The Silverwing is only $1,950 so I’m really considering it.

The engines are bulletproof. The balance with the guzzi type v twin is great. I owned three and they were better than my guzzis

They are extremely reliable 500 cc,50 h.p. water cooked shaft drive. I had one with 80k and no problems at all. They are a bit heavy but the 90° v twin is well balanced and it does not feel heavy. It handles similarly to a guzzi without the dubious Italian electrics and a dry clutch not noted for longevity.

80° silly goose, it was originally going to be 90° but honda wanted a slimmer engine. So along with tighten the V angle, they also rotated the heads 22° so the carbs are tucked under. Doing so resulted in a stubby push rod valve train, when honda was all about over head cams at the time. Truly a masterpiece of engineering

@@yurionabike99 yeah I wasn't sure about the degree. One thing is sure it handled well and was a sound engine.

I like the Silverwing. I think it's a cool looking little bike. You would enjoy it if you get it. I've been riding for 50 years and I've had a lot of different bikes from dual sport to the Electra glide I have now. I love them all. I've ridden from NY to California and back and I want to do it again! The excitement of riding is the same as it was when I bought my first bike. Ride safe.

You have studied this type of bike it is obvious and if it in your budget buy it. You know they aren't making any new ones. This seems to be a logical step up. You'll surly kick your self later on if you walk away. What ever you choose I wish you the best!

I say don’t get the silver wing if you don’t like the handle bar positioning. No point in torturing your self when there are other great ones just like it with the handles you want and easily 100-150 pounds lighter. I own bikes with those handle bar positions and more then not when I’m riding with other people I am usually the one riding that bike because everyone else hates the handle bar position. I would love that 250l you are on that is soooooo awesome.

Had the 83' Silver Wing (30 years ago), great bike if.. you don't need power. If I were going to an 80s bike I would stick with the CB1000, KZ1000 or GS1100.

Since it's June as I'm watching this, I'm pretty sure that you didn't buy the Silver Wing, but with an older bike like that, that you're not familiar with, I'd tend to err on the side of caution and not buy it. Just my experience.
