+Shaun Cason well, Billy Bigrigger, with virtually any big Cat, you shift low and shift slow. If you're missing gears, most older trucks have a Driver Assistance Device, which is a pedal operated torque-reduction apparatus, also referred to as a "clutch". Find that, and get someone to teach you how to use it. God Bless.

Good to know you've never missed a gear. My twin stick shifting capabilities are marginal, and I would rather just enjoy the video instead of nitpicking a couple of scratched gears. Have a good day, smartass.

P Kranz it's not the end of the world boys. everyone skips a gear now and then. why, I've done it in my Ford ranger now that I think about it. who cares? life goes on. I just think this 359 heavy mover is a bad ass to the Nth power. I enjoyed the vid.

See, by the first part of that response I can tell you've never driven, or at least properly, a 3408. You never want to get rpms below 1500 in a 3408, you'll break the crank if you shift low. His shifts were damn near perfect, come back when you have driven a twin stick. I don't think you quite comprehend the magnitude of the shifting techniques required to shift two transmissions simultaneously. If you think that mashing the clutch down will keep you from missing a shift or from grinding then you've obviously never driven a non synchronized transmission.

I remember getting to run the bosses' 94 w900L glider he put an old 3408 into. Would run into California and at he 76 in Redding there was always guys staring at the chromed valve covers and waiting for me to pull out heading to I5 to hear the sound .

Sounds like you have the spicer sst 6 transmission and the spicer 1241 four speed. If they are they are both overdrive and depending on which rear end you have, with the 3408 worked on will get from 110-142mph. Had 1979 ext/hood 3408 655hp with that setup and it would hide the needle behind the 100mph before you hit the top hole. Sounds good and the whine of the trans is what is telling me the transmissions.

I didn't know they could be turned up to that horsepower. How reliable are they?
@StonedPony1
@StonedPony1 5 жыл бұрын
@@jorgem838 Have heard of them being turned up to over 800hp. Like all engines, it was like walking on eggshells. The drawback of a 3408 was the crank and the deg of the pistons ( off the top of my head, I think Cat had them at 60 deg) when Cat made this engine. When I got rid of my 79 Pete it had a little over 500,000 miles on it. It was running good and had, had the bottom end did two times. You just had to find the right Cat person to work on your 3408. I got lucky and found a guy in Houston, Tx that had worked for Cat experimental lab and he knew what to do.

@@StonedPony1 did you ever have to replace the crank on it? Was it easy to work on?
@StonedPony1
@StonedPony1 5 жыл бұрын
@@jorgem838 No, I never had to change the crank. Knew people who did have to change cranks. (Not cheap) Depends on what you mean by easy to work on. You needed to know Cats and have the tools and ask questions from others. Not very hard to fix anything that ever went bad on my trucks. You could find parts for them easy and they were in a lot of stuff back then from trucks, bull dowzer, boats, and power backup. Just getting the oil leaks to stop was the hard part. Now Cat liked their parts and they were not cheap. Had one problem that took a while to find as it would suck air with fuel in the pickup line. The line was new, but somehow it would at times move just right to let air come in. You would think the pump was going out or something else was happening. I was on a dino when it happened the last time, and the old man working the dino said, I think I know what it is. He got it cranked back up and wet the line from the tank to the pump before he found it. I am trying to remember the model number of that engine and can't remember it. Now the guy in Houston who set my trucks up said that it was the engine you could play with. I have seen some 3408 that would make good anchors for a boat. Had one in my first 79 Pete (Had five 79 models owner opp ext/hoods) that stayed in the shop more than on the road till Cat replaced that engine with a 3406 and it had a 6x4 over. They messed up on that engine change as they put an engine in it that somehow got out of their experimental lab. Cathouse told me Cat wanted their engine back and I told them where to stick it. That 3406 was something and you could get over 800hp with ease out of it. (Cat said they had run some of them up to over 1000hp) When they found it in my truck it was only the third one they had found out of ten engines that got out of their lab. Will never forget the sound of that engine in straight pipes as it had a sound of its own. It sounded mean and was mean. Special K, Mississippi Shaker, and others can testify to that and if Southern Shaker (Eddie Gannt) was still alive he could too.

@@StonedPony1 man it's always good to find someone that's knowledgeable like yourself. I don't know how the cranks can just snap on them. But man why did you sell it! Lol. How do you advance the timing on the pump?. Yeah I've seen that you need some specialty tools which you can only get through cat to work on these engines. I like old timers, they always have something important to teach that not everyone else can. But those old timers are real mechanics. And that guy you're talking knows what he's doing!
