Chargers go into Pittsburgh and fumble the opening kickoff in the end zone to spot the Steelers 7 points right off in this do or die Playoff game with a fantastic finish . Bolts are down 28-17 in the fourth Qtr. and............. I'll let you watch the rest.

That Bradshaw INT late in the 4th didn't have to happen, he forced that throw. Dammit! I was 12 years old and it made me sick to my stomach. I really thought the Steelers had a decent team with young and old stars to make a run back to the SB. The Chargers and Fouts really had the Steelers number back then (1979, 80 and 82) losses to the Chargers. First time watching the highlights since 1982, being 52 now. And it still makes me sick. Very painful!

The Chargers roared back in this game after falling behind 14-0 in the first few minutes of the game. One of my favorite games of the 80's! The "Steel Curtain" Steelers dynasty ended that day. If the Steelers had won, I believe they very well could've got that thumb taken care of. The Dolphins defense was strong, but the Steelers offense was still potent. The Jets had Richard Todd...'nuff said. The Redskins vs Steelers would've made for a excellent matchup. I still think Washington wins anyway. The Chargers went down to Miami and just didn't play well at all. Its important for teams on the West Coast to get homefield. The travel is a killer, and it matters late in the season. The Chargers would return to Three Rivers Stadium 14 years later and break Pittsburghs heart again. In pne of the lesser talked about upsets, used a tremendous goal line stand as Pittsburgh tickets to Miami were rudely revoked. The Chargers were not quite ready mix it up with the 49ers, and by the time they realized they were in a Championship football game, George Seifert was about to insert the backups...in the 2nd quarter. Maybe the Chargers will get back there someday. The certainly have talent, but they always get snakebit in playoff games. It would be nice to see the Chargers own a Lombardi, but then again it would be tainted. They were The San Diego Chargers, and the people they left behind deserve it.

@@johnconnell4503 The 1982 Dolphins were tough without a doubt, however keep in mind the Jets QB and Chargers QB are like playing Madden with someone online. You have your game settings on easy and mine is on Veteran. You go through my defense like I'm not there and when I got the ball, I can't even make a 1st down. That's Richard Todd and Dan Fouts. Fouts would figure out the Dolphin defense, unlike Richard Todd. Those turnovers was the game. The Jets defensive effort was waisted that day and I bet, to a man the Jets would tell you there is no way they lose if they kicked FGs. They shut down Miami totally.

The Chargers wouldn't get back to the playoffs after the Miami loss for 10 years (1992). It would be even more interesting if the Chargers had beaten the Houston Oilers in the 1979 AFC Divisional Playoff and host the AFC Championship Game against the Steelers. The Chargers blew out the Steelers in the regular season that year, 35-7. They could've won that game and beaten the Rams for their 1st Lombardi trophy.

I was in attendance when the Steelers played the chargers probably five years prior to this playoff game. Johnnie Unitas started for the Bolts and the powerhouse Steelers blew Johnny U away. Rookie Fouts took over for the second half but the damage had been done for that day but Fouts made history in his prodigious career Air Coryell. Bitter loss for Pittsburgh but Noll & Co had made pittsburgh the city of champyins and the torch passed on this game.

San Diego had Pittsburgh's number but didn't have the fortune of playing them in 1979 when it mattered most. Beat them in the '79 and '80 regular seasons and here in the wonky '82 playoff tournament. Pittsburgh lost a regular season game to the raiders 16 to 0 in 74 but defeated the raiders in the afternoon afc championship that year in oakland, so pittsburgh from having experienced that situation before wouldn't have been perturbed ,the chargers losing at home to a delpeted oilers team " no Earl Campbell ,Dan Pastorini ,Ken Burrough " conjures up the fact that a 3 time SB champion who had ventured into this type of waters before would have defeated the 1979 chargers ,they defeated a supperior 74 raiders team . This 82 Steelers team lacked the pass rush to stymy the chargers ,and Bradshaw was obsolutely pitiful inthe 4th quarter ,his career penchant for ints was simply to tall a task for this steelers defense to overcome ,Bradshaw had the ball twice in the 4th ,nursing a precarious 4 point lead and he couldn't do anything ,the special teams scored a TD and the defense set up another short TD inthe first quarter thus Bradshaw only generated 14 points on his own merit . The 2 most depressing Steelers playoff loss in team history for some of the last remaining SB era players last time together ,the most painful playoff loss the 1976 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP loss to Oakland denying pittsburgh a 3 peat .

Pittsburgh’s lead would have been considered insurmountable in 1980, but the steel curtain allowed Muncie to rush for over 100 yards at Three Rivers Stadium. Ham’s penalty on Blount’s interception was a killer especially because it was away from the play, and Lambert’s holding penalty contributed to the winning drive. SD’s offense was shoving it down Pittsburgh’s throat in the 4th which set up that perfect screen pass to Winslow for the winning TD. It was “Ground Coryell” not Air Coryell that beat the Steelers. Bradshaw’s elbow problems were evident the last drive. Noll should have pulled him for the last throw. There was no way he could get the ball into the end zone.

@@haroldmccoy6580 When i first watched this, i assumed it was the collision with Blount that caused Winslow's limp. But the announcers point out (correctly?) that it was Blount falling on Winslow's heel, post-collision, that caused the limp.

James Brooks was a favorite, traded to Bengals, with whom, he played in a Super Bowl, Air Coryell never did make it. Owners stole Chargers from San Diego, now they get to play 17 road games at Rams house in Lo Cal with a fool for a HC.

Noll held onto his legends too long on the defensive side of the ball otherwise the Steelers would have won this game and maybe another ring as that offense was still powerful.

Jack Ham, holding call on the interception, might have iced the game, not a good way to end a Hall of Fame career. Terry short arming a crucial pass to possibly tie the game. Hard to relive this ending, so should have won this game!

Bradshaw should never have thrown the interception to Jeff Allen after Pittsburgh scored to take a 28-17 lead early in the 4th. After scoring to go ahead by 11, Pittsburgh holds San Diego and gets the ball back. Terry threw the interception on the next possession, the worst pick of his career after playing his best game of his career up until that point

This was the first round game. Remember with the strike shorten season, the league dismissed the divisions and just had the conference standings. The best 8 teams in each conference would quailfy for the playoffs. I didn't watch this game either. I was watching the Jets-Bengals game. That weekend you was lucky to at least step out of the house. You had nothing but football all that weekend on CBS & NBC.
