When NASCAR was so much more exciting than it is today

This was my second race I attended. Free tickets from a cousin who worked at a radio station. Damn backstretch seats. I was just a kid, had to have a friend's dad take us out there in that madness, and come back and pick us up. My hero Pearson crashed out of two and stopped in front me. That sucked. A Pearson fan from the mid 70s, finally got to see him live, and a few more times, but never was really competitive after the Hoss Ellington ride. Thanks to KZbin I can relive the best days of Nascar tho.

So great to hear Bill Connell, I always loved listening to him

Given how great he was at almost every other big speedway in his career, it's hard for anyone to believe that this was as close as Bill Elliott would ever get to winning the Coca-Cola (World) 600. He would win the 500-mile fall race at Charlotte twice (1984, '87), but much like Cale Yarborough, who won the fall race three times but never won the 600, this would be the one significant race that Bill Elliott would never win. It's also interesting to note that Elliott also never won the All-Star Race at Charlotte, either, as his win in that event came the one time it wasn't held at Charlotte.

In 2000, he dominated the first two segments of the All-Star race, and then in the weirdest thing I've ever seen, Dale Junior's car became a rocket ship and Bill's went away. He had it won in 1987 before Ironhead struck...

Ernies Ford engines had a higher power band which gave Bill a advantage on big speedways.. The All star engines were all time bombs that the Gm guys could build up but didn't have to last, so E Elliotts engines had no advantage in the All star race. Nascar changed the engine rules due to Elliotts dominance fearing people would get bored watching him lap the field!

He missed winning the 1987 Winston because of the two aysewholes Bodine and Earnhardt beating on him and trying to wreck him. He clearly had the best car that day.

Charlotte as many of the tracks would simulcast the radio broadcast during the race over the P.A., with the track P.A. cutting in when it needs to during the race.

Sometimes when track conditions are different from the norm, a car manufacturer body design which are not of the sleeker, slicker design that might resemble a shoebox creates downforce hence runs faster through the corners and out does competition probable not possible yes through the decades I've seen it virtually the only explanation for winning versus not?? I'm just saying? I hope my message doesn't get lost in my lack of proper English!

Man, they sure were pushing for a Ford to win that race, I guess to many Ford fans crying...Them Chevys still the most dominant manufacturer of any level of performance competition, circle track dirt or asphalt, drag racing, truck pulling, 4 wheeling, you name it, if they come, they will dominate it

I’m a Chevrolet guy too but that being said and I’ll try to explain from what little I understand about it but according to an interview with Dan Elliott I saw recently he said when the manufacturers pulled out of racing after 1970 and a lot of owners went to Chevrolet because Chevrolet did a wonderful job making their stock engines you could buy off the lot where when a race team started putting high performance parts in them because they were easily interchangeable. He said with Fords it was a different story. Because the only teams that could afford to stay with Ford was the wood Brothers and Bud Moore because they had so much success with them and made a lot of money and I think because of the economy or Ford putting their efforts toward military equipment or whatever they couldn’t afford to be directly involved in racing. Dan said his dad bled Ford blue and if he’d of had to mortgage everything he had he was staying with Ford. The only team I think Ford helped directly in seventies was the No.90 Junie Donlavey team just as an R and D car. That’s how I remember the interview with Dan Elliott it may not be accurate but that’s what I remember him saying basically. Didn’t mean to write you a letter plus you can take this with a grain of salt you can write what I know about cars on a bubble gum wrapper. Like you I’m a GM guy and know people like Smokey Yunick,Junior Johnson and Waddell Wilson could really make those Chevrolets run.
