One of my favorite players. I have a Cardinals hat that Willie, Ozzie Smith and Vince Coleman signed for me when I was 9 years old in 1988.

Could made strong case Willie McGee should been MVP of the 1982 world series. This showcase was the difference in otherwise really close series and the Brewers winning in '82. This '82 series is so underrated among the best fall classics of the last 50 years (going back to the 1960's)

Catcher Darrell Porter.Don't mistake it, Porter also had an outstanding series but McGee show in this game should have been enough to win series MVP. Sadly Porter is best known besides the 1982 series mvp for being one of the first MLB players in the early 1980's that admitted to a cocaine/drinking. He had a good career but substance abuse ruined a possible excellent one. Porter died in the early 2000's. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series_Most_Valuable_Player_Award

And....Porter started his career with the Brewers. He was part of the trade with the Cardinals in 1980 that brought Ted Simmons to Milwaukee. Ironic that two years after that trade, both teams faced off in the WS.

Excellent point Dave. Thanks for bringing it up. It sad that the 1980's ruined great careers including several possible Hall of Fame ones like Porter, Dwight Gooden, Strawberry and dozens more.

Only a world series win by the current Brewers could help to ease the sting that Brewer fans like me still feel from that 1982 world series. McGee was still killing us 16 years later in 1998 whenever the Cardinals came to Milwaukee.

Red Sox fans have their "F*cking Bucky Dent" from the '78 tie-breaker game. Well, I was at that game in '82 and I STILL say "F*cking Willie McGee". Four homers all year and he hits 2 that night and earlier he robbed Paul Molitor of at least a double. It still stings me.

The greatest defensive outfielder of all time. You were not gonna hit it into the gap on Willie Mcgee. While other outfielders are making diving catches on long drives into the gap, Willie is standing there waiting on the ball.

He was a star. Willie was rookie of the year (1982), MVP (1985), won two batting titles, and won three Gold Gloves. Pete Rose didn't do that. Pete Rose had one MVP, two batting titles, and just two Gold Gloves. Willie McGee > Pete Rose.

As a lifelong Redbird's fan, I have seen, grimly, most of my Cards games in Shea in the 1980s. Had to hear the obnoxious Mets fans (who were often also my friends...) yell "ET..." all the time. So guess who is my favorite Cardinal of all time? Yep. Watching him run was like watching a gazelle at full speed.

Great catch....but every angle there showed McGee about 2-3 feet from the wall. That ball would have hit that padding and not even that top rail section. Tony Kubek said "the ball is over the yellow line, in the seats"....hahaha...some good 80s weed in Milwaukee apparently.
