Notice how in these days, they actually talk about the car, and the technology in it. nowadays, they talk about cup holders and color options. online, you often have to roll over several pages before you can even see the engine options

@jason9022 - problem was that Olds (who made the 5.7L V8 for ALL GM divisions) made fewer changes to their gas-powered equivalent (Chevy's 5.7-350) than they should've had... The NA-V8 diesel weren't as "from-the-ground-up" as other diesel engines were. OTOH, the Olds 4.3L NA-V6 diesel was built "from-the-ground-up" and didn't fared as bad as the V8. There wasn't a modern V6 gas equivalent until Chevy made one years later...

During that time, other GM divisions once designed and manufactured their own powertrain. The engines in the Chevrolet El Camino were from: 3.8 Liter V6 by Buick 5.0 Liter V8 by Chevrolet 5.7 Liter V8 diesel by Oldsmobile As a matter of fact the engines were availble to other GM midsized platforms: Chevrolet Malibu Chevrolet Monte Carlo Pontiac LeMans which later renamed Bonneville in 1982 Pontiac Grand Prix Buick Century Buick Regal Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme GMC El Diablo

A camero or corvette l78 350 upgraded to a 400 crank 383 would be awesome tpi . Or a 400 SBC with a tri power setup works great to . Fuel injection is great but car-berating a engine properly will provide almost equal mpg and performance when tuned properly. I like a torque engine. With a decent high gear . Like a 12 bolt locker in 347 . Combine that with a 700r 4 and then you have hot rod when wanted with a 70% overdrive for highway travel. No 454 for me please. They blow up when I drive them . Never happened with a 400 SBC though and I felt the same power . A 401 is possibly the best pickup engine I have driven

They will mever make a car this easy and afordable again. It's all about profit margins and not what you want or need. Now car companies tell you what "you" want. They don't listen. They produce whatever makes the most money for them. Finance for extremely long times and defects and recalls are at their highest ever levels due to farming out labor to foreign countries. I own a ‘68 El Camino and love it! It’s a “survivor” that’s been seldom driven and in great condition. It includes the uncommon factory bucket seats and is in its rare “Sequoia Green” finish. Best part? I bought it from a friend for under $6,000 in 2023.

I only knew they existed because of working in auto parts for so many years. Going through catalogs and looking things up, I had always seen that engine listed, but I've still never actually seen one, or heard of anyone with one.

Apparently not very popular option i would think the 5 liter found its way more under the hood than the diesel.

The El Camino. A car and truck rolled into one. With more value and features offered for what you pay for than the imports. Over 1000 lbs and 3 people is ideal for my lifestyle. The 210 option for utility, power and efficiency suits me best where I live. My car/truck of choice and I’d love to own one of any model year someday 😊❤️

In Greece, there is no American cars, an old guy that took it from USA, abandoned a brand new condition el Camino almost 1 year ago to a garage without roof because of the Greek taxes (1.6 engines have 250€ per year taxes without the 700€ insurance), 1.200€ for a 2.0, imagine for this car, feels bad though, no one is being sold here, and only one that exists, is being left abandoned some months ago
