I can't understand why people complain so much about the 2.8 litre engine. I drove my 2.8l S-10 Tahoe (which I had bought in used condition) in Germany for almost a decade and it never gave me any troubles. With the 5-speed manual, it had nice acceleration, reasonable fuel consumption and wasn't too slow for long-distance rides at the Autobahn (no speed limits). When I sold it in 2006 with ~245.000 miles on the clock, it still ran perfectly smooth. The engine never required repairs beyond the regular maintenance, except once when I had to replace some sensor at the injection system (which cost me 35 Euros). I still miss that car.

I like how the tow ratings are higher on these trucks which are lighter and less powerful than a modern small truck. Seems like a conspiracy to sell full size trucks to me... Trust me, this truck with 5000lb on the boot is gonna suck trying to stop. But it "can" do it. Now they say something like 3000lb max on the newer ones. Now we have ABS and a heavier tow vehicle which would be more stable at 5000lb - although neither sounds exciting to try to go very far with.
@sldl048 жыл бұрын

Hmmm...My 1992 S-10 has been through hell. The two previous owners were teenage boys, ant they took it field hopping, mudding, street racing, and have dented and banged up the body, more on the bed than the cab, though. It has been through he'll weather-wise, too; yet, my floors don't have the least bit of rust. My rear wheel wells, front fenders (where mud is known to accumulate and hide), and some rusting of the rockers and lower rear cab panels, and the bottoms of the doors, have a bit of rust. However, for the hell it's been subjected to, and the neglect it has endured, for the 26 years of it's life, I believe it to be in pretty decent condition. They're not all rust buckets. The condition of any automobile is subject to its care--or lack thereof--throughout the duration of its lifetime; if it is neglected and abused, it will be in really abhorrent condition, as opposed to one that is regularly and properly maintained. That is simple logic. That's not to say that no lemons exist, as I've been privy to the ownership of several--they do exist, of course; it's just that, on the whole, when an automobile is used and maintained in the manner in which it was meant to be, most are, on the average, decent and reliable. It seems that all the naysayers on here have gotten lemons, an instead of trying for another example or making lemonade from the lemons, they decided to be finished with, I believe, a vehicle they really weren't thrilled to be acquiring to begin with.

Hi, I bought a 1983 chevy s10 pickup about 6 months ago. The original owner, a farmer and mechanic, ordered it from the factory in 1982. He had 3 trucks, and used this one for going into town.. when he died, his daughter inherited it..she gave it to her son in the last year of high school. He blew the head gasket. They had just repainted it, put new tires on it and re-did the exhaust system. Its gorgeous, silver w an aluminum tool box on the bed. Best of all, it only has 69,004 original miles on it ! Once the head gasket is repaired and the carburetor.. I am going to sell it. I am in Charlotte NC. How do o go about getting the best price ? Thank you..haven't done it before and hoping for some advice.

No, he's just telling the truth. All manufacturers make lemons. American-made automobiles from that time period were overly regulated, as they are today (though it is far worse today); without the restrictions these automobiles would have been as grand (in performance and reliability) as they were before the PEA crackdown in 1970 that began for the 1971 model year.

@@donnieinskeep7264 with the oil crisis and strict emissions it gave imports a big leap especially Japan since they had the best experience in small economy cars and no one wanted an underpowered big V8 gas guzzler but before no one understood why anyone would want a small car with good economy when gas was 38 cents and then skyrocket to 55 cents but in today money that only be from $2.16 to $3.12 though California has seen well above $4
@donnieinskeep72646 жыл бұрын
You are also telling the truth. The energy crisis, EPA restrictions, and many other factors figure in in the equation. These, and others, are the reasons that the Big 3 went to imported mini trucks when they did, first rebadged imports, then their own: to have fuel-efficient machines with utility that they could sell. As the foreign autos had, as you've stated, mastered fuel efficiency and utility out of such autos, and the Big 3 decided that they could up profits and credibility by building their own. Though they made valiant efforts to do so, it took them several years to work out bugs and other issues; but once they had those issues under control, their own domestic-branded pickup trucks were actually really good trucks. It just took some automakers longer than others to get these issues worked out, unfortunately.

I had a 94 ranger I put 370k miles on the oem block, less the cam and head gaskets since I liked to drive it overheating a few times early in it's life. To add I've had a few others all the way up to my only new car I've ever bought was a 02 Ranger I just didn't keep it long till I saw a Cobra I liked better. 4.0L v6 is the only one I'd fool with, but I personally know several people with the 4bangers that love em. I don't like anyones 80s anything except for the Porsche 944 and 928 I had, but for the price they were new I'd still call em junk, what I paid for them was fine. I've worked on both, I've been in some bad wrecks in my first Ranger all to even drive it back home after hitting and totaling a full sized pickup with it. They are built much better, I've had 3 friends die in S10s. But all the same I don't even own a vehicle with a gas engine anymore. I try not to be a total brand bias whore, but gm is one name I've not liked anything of that I've owned. I live in a GM product now actually LOL, but the engine and trans have been scrapped, waiting to find a Cummins 5.9 to go in it (motor home). So when it comes to GM I've never had any good feelings with their products ever. I need to add, I pretty well don't like anyones new trucks, over priced and over regulated and longevity is a pasttime. The truck I drive has 450k miles on it and climbing every day, no major engine work I will say that chevy atleast did better with going with durmax diesels because they sure didn't have one worth a fart till Isuzu started showing them. Now speaking on Isuzu, I've have a few of their products some that had the GM stamp on them and I will not say anything against tthem other than they are rust bucks and the parts are usually not cheap. But I've had a few early 90s rodeos and I really like those alot. In gerneral on their trucks, the brakes have always seems lacking and more spongy to me. Every brand surely has their faults noone is perfect and our creations aren't going to be either. I think anyone can agree the worst car maker to probably be Yugo without a doubt I would think LOL. But at the end of the day if that particular vehicle you drive is doing what you need reliably and you are happy with it, then I sure am not smack talking your personal ride. When I go to buy a vehicle I usually buy something that doesn't run at all, except my current truck, I didn't have time to work on a non-runner.

All good points, gentlemen. Ultimately, preference is in the eyes of the beholder. I've had 9 of these trucks, in all configurations, and I love them. I'm driving number 9 now, as my daily driver, and I love it, too. It's a 1992 S-10, with the 4.3L V-6, THM700-R4, 2WD, and it's an extended cab. It gets 25 to 26 mpg at 65mph on the highway, and it pulls an 8,000lb (GVW) trailer safely, and without breaking a sweat. I don't buy trucks to be pretty or trailer queens, I buy them to work--and these trucks have always done this for me, with no issues other than preventative maintenance and normal wear items (tires, wiper blades, etc.).
