1983 GE Filter-Flo - Colors Extra Large - Full Cycle

This 1983 General Electric washing machine has provided reliable service for 40 years and counting. Here is a full cycle video, capacity extra large, various colored items being washe. Two years ago the plastic pump started leaking from the weep hole and needed to be replaced, along with the original belt. Not bad for a machine that has the equivalent use as a million-mile car. It needs a little bit of attention, as you can see during the spin cycle it's getting a little shaky. I will film more video of this machine once I have serviced it.

These machines were always good performers in my books. I think the agitation stroke is at a nice sweet spot between the long-slow & short-fast strokes of other machines. And it's nice to see that your one is still alive and kicking after being in service for many years. Thanks for the video!

I had one from 1993 and it could clean anything from delicate fabrics to durable clothes with dirt caked into them. An example would be sturdy cottons with mud after a hard day of work or play.

My mother had an 84 FilterFlo. It was a two speed. What mystifed me was that when using the regular speed, it would start at slow for the first 10-15 seconds and then ramp up. Why is this?

Probably as a measure to prevent wear and have a softer start, or possibly just an engineering convenience.

My 93 GE did that. It too was a 2-speed model.

The two speed GE filter flow washers used a clutch, so it started at slow speed when the clutch engaged it went into fast speed.

@@petermaz701 My 1993 GE did that. I believe the clicking into normal speed from gentle was the cluch shifting when set to normal.

@@jeromedavis8575 that’s right they did not have two speed motors they use the clutch to control the speed. You could change the speed control from slow to fast, but you would damage it if you went from fast to slow cause it didn’t go backwards.

Very uncommon at this point. Almost any water appliance is now. FFs are particularly rare in my area but there’s a decent amount of later direct drive Whirlpool and every once in a while I’ve seen a belt drive 80s model.

I have regular jeans if that’s close enough, but I don’t own a pair of skinny jeans. It’s hard to film these cycle videos because there’s almost always someone home making background noise, but next time I get the opportunity I’ll record some more.

I have exact washer made in 1983. Still works beautifully after 41 years. Best GE Washer ever made. Not the China made crap of today.
