A late bike mechanic friend of mine bought one of these brand new in the 80s, and it was his fav bike. Dude had alot of bikes too, including a 1st gen busa. The XR500 was his fav though, lol Likely it was sentimental value above everything else.

Interesting. A previous owner must have moved it. I have never used the lever, though I hear horror stories of people seriously hurting themselves trying to get these ol' thumpers to fire.

@@tobandyck1 most big four strokes can be hard to start but it’s mostly the early Yamaha TT’s and XT’s76’-78’, they have a dot on the cam, if you don’t line it up and kick it right, it will kick you right over the bars and or break your leg. I’ve seen it in person.

@@tobandyck1 They are used to be able to nudge the piston beyond Top Dead Center. If you can easily do that like on a two stroke, I'm guessing the compression is low.

I want so bad to ride in the dirt but I have nowhere to ride anymore. I had a 80cc CR back in the day. I ran it so much it ran out of power. I assume it needed a top end build but I had no idea back then.

I got this bike except guy who sold it to me put in the XL 600r motor! The sprocket is bigger though so it behaves just like the XR 600R!
