It's been way too long since my beloved O's have been in the fall classic, way too long. Mike Flanagan was a fantastic pitcher, 1979 he was near unhittable, it's sad he ended his own life in 2011, RIP Mike Flanagan, you'll always be a super star.

Thank you for this video. Palmer was one of my favorite pitchers growing up--even though I grew up a Yankees fan. I knew the O's lineup and batted like them when we played whiffleball. My favorite was Eddie Murray! So glad the O's avenged their loss in 1979, and especially happy that Palmer got the win.

Watching this game again made me feel sad in a way...years ago at the time...though I knew they were in the twilight of their careers......I had no idea just how many great players I grew up watching were in a season, what would be the last time they ever really played for a Championship......Jim Palmer I am sure after having a great bounce back season in 1982 thought he had several more years in him even though he was hurt most of 1983....Palmer won this game and it would be the last game he ever got a win in as he was cut loose finally after a horrible start in 1984 and having nothing left in the tank. Steve Carlton who though he had a loosing record....had a great 1983 really...he threw a ton of innings and had a really respectable ERA, he struck out what 275 batters or something like that.....hardly a poor season at all from Lefty....but though he would hang around the majors through most of the rest of the decade with several teams.....Lefty was in what would be his last big season....never again would he throw as many innings, or come close to 200 k's in a season....never again would he win 15 games.....though he stuck around....and was solid in 1984....he really was almost done and we didnt know it at the time....look at how many solid role players who had been hero's over the years from 79 through 83 for the Orioles that were nearing the end of their careers....guys like John Lowenstein who I know played on past 83 but really his best years were in the past after 83, Ken Singelton really was nearing the end of his career also ...after years of being a deadly hitter for the O's.....I see guys like Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez....though they would play on after 83.....none ever played in the playoffs again....in a sense this series....was many a great players last real chance in the post season......I also look at the Phillies and Orioles.....and think of what happened to these teams after 1983.....the Orioles fell apart really...slowly but they fell apart....the farm system that had helped them stay a tough team through the late 60's, the entire decade of the 70's and the early 80's......was drying up....the team was going away from what had built so many great Oriole teams....Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray were in their Prime on this 1983 team...Ripken actually just entering his.....They had great looking young pitchers in Mike Boddicker and a kid who was hyped though he never became an ace like many said he would in Storm Davis....who still had a decent career.....but as so many key Orioles on this 1983 team slowly began to fade....long time starters like Al Bumbry, Rich Dauer, and Ken Singleton.....the Orioles farm system stopped producing......as Dennis Martinez and Mike Flanagan and Mcgregor began to fall off over the next few years.....the farm system couldnt produce new blood to fill the void.....the bull pen lost Tim Stoddard after 83 even though he hadnt had a great season that year....Sammy Stewart battled his demons, Tippy Martinez who I loved was going to slowly begin to decline from being a dominate lefty to just an average lefty to by 86 near the end of the line....The Prioles tried to fill what the farm system couldnt by jumping on veteran free agents to fill holes...adding Fred Lynn and others...but it didnt do anything but act as a stop gap for a few extra years until by 1987 only 4 short years after winning it all.....all that was left really was Murray, Ripken both still stars in their prime....and Boddicker and a bunch of washed up vets and kids who either wasn't ready or never would be ready for the show.......and then after 88 they traded Murray who should have been a career Oriole for really cheap help and a hyped prospect in Juan Bell who couldnt hit major league pitching. As for the Phillies....they did much like the Orioles.....in that they tried to stay contenders after 1983...though they fell off....they did go out in 1984 and brought in veteran Jerry Koosman to help in the rotation and he had a solid year that year.....they tried to fill holes though with not just veterans but they did have a farm system trying to produce....in 1983 there was 2 young arms the Phillies hoped would be ace pitchers for them in a few years in Charles Hudson and Kevin Gross......both would have decent careers in the majors and both did have some good stuff......however neither would become an ace......Hudson was an enigma...he mixed great starts with horrible ones......Gross did the same.....winning 15 games in 1985 only to never again win close to that even though Mike Schmidt said in 1985 he had the stuff to win 20 games every season.......The Phillies also had a exciting young player in Juan Samuel who would be an amazing power speed hitter at 2nd base to take over for the old Joe Morgan.....Samuel is forgotten by many now but he had some awesome years from 1984 through 1987 for the Phils....the guy wasnt a great hitter and struck out often but he hit just enough and had power and elite speed....this is a guy that stole of 70 bases in 84 and over 50 again in 85....people forget that......I can only imagine what would have happened with Philly if they had never traded for Von Hayes before 1983.....yes Hayes had a solid career and had some big years for Philly...but he never became a star for them.....that they expected......but they gave up a ton to get him....and the biggest name they gave up in that trade a hitter who honestly had a much better career that Hayes.....Julio Franco.....Franco wouldnt develope power until later in his career...but he became the INdians starting SS in 1983 and went on to have a awesome career...he could hit...he could field the position and he had speed......I think of what might have been when I think of a middle infield of Julio Franco and Juan Samuel for the Phillies in second half of the 1980s...Franco was for sure a better hitter than Ivan Dejesus who would be out of Philly after 1984.......also who can forget that they Phillies threw in a young 3rd baseman in adeal with veteran Larry Bowa to the Cubs to get DeJesus because they felt Bowa was washed up and DeJesus was so much younger....funny thing...Bowa had 2 great years for the Cubs in 82, 83 and a solid though declining year in 1984 for them...but that throw in kid...the Phils felt they didnt need anyway because they had Schmidt at 3rd base......was a kid named Ryne Sandberg who was only considered a fringe prospect by most scouts because he didnt have enough power they said.....what happened.....Sandberg ended up moving to 2nd base and boom hall of fame career.....Philly could have moved Schmidt to 1st base in 84 instead of like they did in 85 when Rick Schu came up....and played Ryno at 3rd.....or honestly used him off the bench until after 83 when Rose and Perez left.......Really Franco would have been just as good on defense and better with the bat in 1983 than DeJesus ......so if they never made that deal....Bowa could have played on in 82 and 83 for the Phils and FRanco eased into the spot as Bowa slowly declined ......as for Samuel....he was the only one of what could have been a great young infield along with Schmidt to close out the 1980s that the Phils did hand onto.....but Philly really was done after 1983 also like the Orioles...they couldnt replace the veteran stars with young talent fast enough and free agency didnt help them really......the staff really fell apart with Lefty falling off after 1983 and John Denny never really doing anything again for them.....and looking more like John Denny pre Philly days.......they never had enough pitching....then when Schmidt finally fell off in 1988...the team finally went into rebuild mode fully as the Orioles did also around the same time range........funny how it goes......when I watched this world series as it happend ...I knew both teams were filled with a lot of older players...but if you told me that neither team would really be true contenders again for the world Title until going through a rebuild process....I would have laughed at you.....the Orioles did have a surprise year in 1989 going from worst to first almost in a weak A.L. East that year.....but other than that they were rebuilding on into the early 90s....the Phils were rebuilding after 1988 also until 1983 before they finally made it back to the post season. Schmidt honestly was still a great power hitter in 1983...but he was already at a point his very best years were in the past.....he would win another MVP in 1986...but his best years were in 1980 and strike shortened 1981 where he was no doubt the best hitter in the National League and possibly all of baseball.....Rose was a gamer...and hard worker....but really if you look at his stats.....1983 was a big fall off for him in batting average and other stats.....he really was at a point he was no longer a full time player though no one could tell him that....but he finally realized it and accepted a part time role once he got back to the Reds in 1984.......this is so great to watch these games again.....thank you for uploading.....brings back so much history and memories to me as if it was just yesterady this game was played

GREAT INSIGHT! I was 12, a month shy of 13 during this 1983 WS. Sadly my memories from this include being at my Nana's house (grandma) and my Pop Pop had a stroke that Friday night, and died Saturday during game four. I also was realitavely naive regarding how old my Orioles were in 1983, and expected this to become a yearly norm for my beloved Birds. Boy was I in for a rude awakening...... The one thing you missed, sir, was the Phil's rapid (re)ascension back to the top of the NL, culminating with a 1993 WS berth against the (HATED) Blue Jays. Sadly the Phillies "blue collar" makeup of Kruker, Schilling (former Oriole sadly), and "Nails" were unable to defeat the smug Blue Jays, allowing them their repeat WS title. Further exacerbating the title being in Toronto was the looming players 'strike, which effectively destroyed the Montreal Expos franchise for good after the 1994 WS was canceled over unfettered greed by both players & owners. Cal's run at the great Lou Gehrig's streak brought fans back but 27 years later I still lament the strike that may have essentially all but guarenteed the long-term greed of mostly players [with absurd salaries and who REFUSE STILL a salary-cap]who now command upwards of $25-$30 million per year to play a ******* kid's game many (like myself) would play for the love of the sport. I do not like today's game but still love my Orioles despite many years of MOSTLY heartache, choking, and vast disappointment. Give me THESE players over the crop of those who play today and I will once again allow my love for the game to shine through. Otherwise KZbin will be my primary streaming service, bringing back the ghosts of those long gone who played the game LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED, especially those like "Dipper" (Dempsey) and "Lefty" Steve Carlton.....

Growing up in Baltimore around this era of time .i was 12.My father bought season tickets for the O's and Colts .I followed the Orioles religiously. I remember before games Cal and Eddie would warm up together. Every game I ever went to .they would warm up take batting practice run sprints.I just imagine Eddie schooling Cal on everything under the baseball sun .In fact my opinion is Eddie was MVP that year 1983 .im not saying Cal didn't deserve the award ,he nearly hit 50 doubles that year .I just think Eddie got stiffed ,because Cal was seen in a different way .Eddie was a quiet warrior.Cal could sell MLB and a hometown hero with his roots in the Orioles organization. I think any Orioles fan would agree that with 2 outs down a couple runs with runners in scoring position we would want Eddie in the batters box hitting lefty instead of Cal .and yeah it was cool to see Cal the MVP .but even then at 12 years old I thought Eddie got snubbed.

Both players achieved greatness. I think I have to say Eddie Murray was my favorite Oriole and favorite mlb player. He hit over 500 homeruns and many grand slams when the hits were needed. @RRaquello Жыл бұрын
Being bigger, faster and stronger doesn't make you a better player otherwise you should just put a bunch of horses out there and let them play baseball. Of course in 1983 fans were saying the same thing about how bigger, stronger, faster the current players were then in comparing them to Mantle, Mays, skinny little Hank Aaron, etc.

The Orioles win and all Howard Cosell can say is Eddie Murray failed them again by not getting a hit early in the game with runners in scoring position. I am sure it was a miserable series for Cosell, he seemed not to like the Orioles, I bet Weaver wanted to punch him in the face a few times. Al Michael seemed to ignore Cosellel's meaningless chatter. Cosell was completely outmatched by Earl Weaver's knowledge of the game and the fine details of all the players strengths weakness and scouting reports.
@clintscroggs652 жыл бұрын
At this point, Murray was 1 for 12 with no RBI in a series that was still up in the air. This was after Murray going 4 for 26 in the '79 series. He wasn't producing. Went 4 for 8 with two homers in games 4 and 5.
