This was my first road bike in 1990. The night I graduated high school was the first night I rode it. Man I Love this bike, wish I still had it

I had one for 20 years and loved it! True sport tourer with the shaft drive. I finally bought an 04 Thruxton and the guy I sold it to in ME has kept it mint.

Traded my 550 seca in for one of these, Super Red was what Yamaha called it. It is my favorite bike of all time It was ahead of it’s time. Not much advertising on it back then but it was faster than the 903 ninja that was so talked about back in 93. The sound, performance and handling was second to none back then and as good as anything I have ever ridden. I rode that thing across several states and camped with my buddies. I also rode it to the drag strip and raced then drove it home. Low 11s@129 spinning the tire through 3rd. I never could make myself slip the clutch when launching. Beautiful and amazing bike. Wish I could afford one now.

I bought this bike in 1987 for $2900.00 with zero miles on it. The dealership found it in the warehouse.

I had one, mine was white. I remember when you would past 6000 rpm you would slide back on the seat no matter how hard you tried not to.

I had a 82 XJ650RJ I wanted a Seca 900 but couldn't find one. Wound up riding that Seca 650 until 1988 when I moved to a Concour.

Nice bike, i own an 900f from 1991. and i think its funny that the only thing they have changed is the ferring, tank and the handlebars, every thing else looks the same, it kinda makes me want to convert mine to a seca lookalike, i think it looks better. Thanks for the video.

I'm refreshing my memory on these after just seeing one pop up online for sale. I guess 1983 was a good year for one off models as I have a 1983 Honda CB1100F Super Sport that was made only that year. Would love to be a Jay Leno type and buy these old bikes up that are in this condition.

I did own one for few years. Bought it brand new. Beautiful bike but unfortunately, the XJ900RK was plagued with a serious shimmy problem at moderately high speed. I managed to fix the problem by removing the steering mounted fairing and installing the 1984 XJ750R frame mounted fairing.

I'm 99% certain we got the 83/84 XJ900s with the option of no fairing at all here in NZ, and they had a big round headlight.

I ran mine to 155 without a shimmy,wobble or anything. Smooth as glass. The smoothest bike I have EVER ridden. 11.29 @119 quarter mile time till I put K&Ns on and re jetted fro 112.5 to 125.5 main jets with a supertrap pipe. I never timed it after that but it was a beast from that day on. Had to put Barnett clutch plates in after that because the power increase was phenomenal from the new breathing ability. It would power wheelie in third like a dirt bike. So much fun. My gold wing wasn’t as smooth riding.

Nice bike, still have one to rebuild again and make it new again. At 13:31 I noticed this one misses one plastic cap on the handle bar. These are rather hard to get original.....

Yamaha only made this modal for one year ,when it came out none of the motorcycle writers liked it ,the one I had was a little "buzzy" at highway speeds ."

No, it was made in 83 and 84, then it got a hike in displacement to 891cc a frame mounted fairing, a few other minor revisions and made till 1990, after another minor revision it carried on till 94.

Picked up an 1983 xj900 seca with my brother last year in Canada. Cool story here because my dad owned one the same white red and blue colours back when he was our age. It's in fairly good condition and really a beautiful bike, . We got it running great but we're having trouble keeping it running that way. Runs wonderfully but then after about 500km it feels like it needs us to go back messing with the carbs. Is this normal for an old bike with 56000km? Also looking for a new exhaust since ours has a rusted metal inside the exhaust, rattling when riding.

Super popular? Thats not how I remember this bike. Why was the bike only produced for one year? Here are some reasons: In ’84, Yamaha released the FJ1100, which was much better suited for the needs of the American market - way faster. European riders felt the handlebar-mounted fairing created instability at high speeds, so the next year Yamaha moved the fairing mount to the frame and then bumped up displacement to 1100. It was only 853cc. It only ran 11.8 1/4 mile. My 83 KZ750 L-3 ran 12.09 when new. It said 900 on it and was only 2 tenths quicker than a 750. I recall a guy I knew bought one and he was bragging about it and saying how great it was and it was the best bike ever and I knew it wasn't cuz I just read an article in a magazine and they did not say any of that. The motorcycle magazine basically said it was ok but lacked performance. I'm not saying it was a dog, but the FJ1100 was 28 h.p. more! It also suffered having shaft drive.(87% efficient over a chain 98%) I do agree It is very rare. In the eighties and nineties all I did was live and breathe motorcycles, that's why I remember all this 'useless information' lol.

The 900 was never popular but it filled a nice niche, for me the shaft drive made it a nicer sport tourer than the chain drive models you mentioned. Plenty fast for me and super smooth. It was discontinued because Reagan bailed out Harley by putting a tax on bikes over 700 cc. This one year model was shelved then all the 699cc bikes came out. Mine is still mint w the new owner.!
@uhtred7860
@uhtred7860 11 ай бұрын
I agree with everything, apart from "bumped up displacement to 1100" the first XJ900 was 853cc, then, they increased the displacement to 891cc, frame mounted the fairing, and still badged it as a 900. These bikes are a classic case of "It does exactly what it says on the tin" They weren't the fastest or the lightest, best handling or stood out in any real way, but guys who wanted a shaft drive tourer that wasn't expensive, was reliable and would take them, a passenger and some luggage across country at a sedate pace they were perfect.

My 83 XJ 900 was way faster than the 903 Mika I was gonna trade it for but it wasn’t nearly as fast. Mine ran low 11s at @120+. I only weighed 160 back then but no bike ever came close back then. I’ve owns a lot of bikes but would trade any of them back for another XJ900.
