Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. The format was originally developed to store and play only sound recordings (CD-DA) but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM). Several other formats were further derived from these, including write-once audio and data storage (CD-R), rewritable media (CD-RW), Video Compact Disc (VCD), Super Video Compact Disc (SVCD), Photo CD, PictureCD, CD-i, and Enhanced Music CD. The first commercially available audio CD player, the Sony CDP-101, was released October 1982 in Japan.
Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 in) and can hold up to about 80 minutes of uncompressed audio or about 700 MiB of data. The Mini CD has various diameters ranging from 60 to 80 millimetres (2.4 to 3.1 in); they are sometimes used for CD singles, storing up to 24 minutes of audio, or delivering device drivers.
At the time of the technology's introduction in 1982, a CD could store much more data than a personal computer hard drive, which would typically hold 10 MB. By 2010, hard drives commonly offered as much storage space as a thousand CDs, while their prices had plummeted to commodity level. In 2004, worldwide sales of audio CDs, CD-ROMs and CD-Rs reached about 30 billion discs. By 2007, 200 billion CDs had been sold worldwide.
From the early 2000s CDs were increasingly being replaced by other forms of digital storage and distribution, with the result that by 2010 the number of audio CDs being sold in the U.S. had dropped about 50% from their peak; however, they remained one of the primary distribution methods for the music industry. In 2014, revenues from digital music services matched those from physical format sales for the first time.

The best format for music, even to this day. Nothing beats the quality and versatility of a CD. Not to mention, they're extremely durable.

CD’s are great for schools and libraries. Digital files are better for portability, and Vinyl LP’s are best for the experience and creating an album as a total work of art.

First gen CD's from the 80s played back on a modern DAC will always sound better than vinyl to me

True. CD's are better. Vinyl was great because it was cheaper option and sounds and looks really nice usually. But, if we talk honestly and forgot all the hype and BS. CD is the way to listen music. Also the CD prices are still on reasonable level (Ok, there is rare and very expensive CD's too). Vinyl is nothing but a trend nowadays and like all trends it will end at some point.

@lucalone spot on. The 1st time I noticed this was on a Sony Music TV double CD compilation entitled Fantastic 80's. The sound mastering was abysmal

Older cd usually sound better. Most since the mid 90's are BRICKWALLED. Dynamic Range Database is a good site for finding out if the cd is mastered or re-mastered with excessive compression. There are still many good sounding new and re-mastered cds. ie Sony Legacy
@stevenoneill7166
@stevenoneill7166 Ай бұрын
@kaiserbillxiv1245 I agree regarding the Legacy label. They remastered ELO's 1979 album Discovery to a much better quality having fixed a few problems on the original analogue master tape. But there some very poor remasters. One of the worst I came across was a HDCD remastered version of Roxy Music's Flesh + Blood album from 1980. Aside from the compression, there's distortion on some of the tracks. I later got an earlier, pre-remastered copy of this album & those problems were not audible on it. I too would certainly recommend anyone buying a back catalogue CD album to get an earlier release rather than one of those mediocre remasters

That must have been circa 1986. As I'm writing this it's 2023, and boy thing's have changed. CDs are for the most part are actually cheaper and vinyl has gotten extremely expensive. Whatever happened to cassettes? Believe it or not, they're still around and I believe as strong as ever.😅

I still use cd today, I own a very high end one and had it since 1992 and still going strong and still beat today’s rubbish MP3 players. Just watch remastered cd today, they can make a bad job of them. Always buy first prints from the past for best sound. I do own HI res player too and it’s good but can’t tell the difference because your ears don’t hear at that level.

....and half of those vinyl records went to homes where there is no record player. With manufacturing defect rate of 20%, you'd think the 21st century record buyer would be slowing down. Most titles are bought on speculation where the shrink rap hasn't even been taken off. Divots, dimples off-centered spindle holes, non-fills, warps, and surface noise all await these hipsters.

Sooo. 40 years later, the script has been flipped. Now, the same LPS that were discarded years ago are now being sold as being better than the CDs that initially replaced them. So what's the correct narrative? I'm so confused? Was this just all hype and no substance??

some people like the analog sound you get with an lp, but as far as the amount of information that can be stored is concerned cds win no doubt allowing them to store more technically 'perfect' sound. you also get nostalgia and a longing for things that have passed.

Funny how they used to call vinyl LPs "albums" to tell them apart from CDs back in the late 80s, when technically albums can be CDs too. In fact the term "vinyl" is more from the vinyl revival too, rather than from the OG vinyl days too... Funny how naming conventions change with the years...

The compact disc is clear, but the resolution is far too low! Compare Michael Jackson's "thriller" CD to the original LP! No comparison, the vinyl is much more "deeper" and realistic!
@tookitogo
@tookitogo 3 жыл бұрын
“Resolution is too low” - this is, of course, complete and utter nonsense. That doesn’t, however, mean that a CD release of an album will sound superior, because they are often mastered quite differently. It’s eminently possible you like the sound of the vinyl master better. (And this is before the absurd loudness wars that started in the late 90s.)
