The Open atmosphere, Peter Aliss' voice, and Steve's golf skills and charisma.... All good reason to get hooked by golf in my young age... ❤️

Seve at his best was the greatest player ever. This was the greatest era of golf with multiple all-time great players playing together. Not like the last 20+ years.

Love these old videos. Back when the BBC had golf coverage worth talking about. The theme tune was immense
@gloriouskodachrome5 жыл бұрын
This coverage wasn't by the BBC, the 1 hour 16mm film was shown over Christmas on Sky, image quality was stunning compared to dross BBC video coverage of the same event. I'm no golf fan, but the footage and commentary produced by Trans World International was riveting. This youtube upload doesn't do the film justice.

Yep. The BBC has sunk so far in their coverage of everything over the years. They went from respected to repulsive today.

Golf's most iconic moment - Seve's putt on 18 in 1984
@user-gd1ow9kb1q5 жыл бұрын
Remember watching this. Tom Watson was going down the 17th leading, and on for his 6th Open. He'd won the previous two open's, then he comes a cropper on the road hole. Great to see Seve win though.

they were tied when Watson played his infamous shot on the 17th. Ballesteros birdied the last and Watson finished 5 and 4

I think that loss broke Watson
@dlamiss6 жыл бұрын
Im a massive Watson fan and thought the 2009 defeat was the worst thing I had ever seen in sport but ironically the third round here did him. He shot 66 and It should have been a 62, he missed 4 putts of 6 feet or less. Although he challenged again in various majors I do agree he was never the same player after the 84 open. And he very quickly declined following this
@stephenmacdonald766 жыл бұрын
@@dlamiss I seen a clip when he delivers a MasterCard gift to someone in St Andrews and the guy tries to bring up the 84 open And he doesn't even acknowledge what he said so It must still be sore a true gentleman and could have won many more
@dlamiss6 жыл бұрын
He did have chances following this open and I honestly believe he should have won 5 years later but again the putter let him down. 8 Majors probably should have been 12
@stevepising5 жыл бұрын
He was one of the finest ballstrikers in the world through the remainder of the 80's but the magical putting touch he showed in the early 80's had left him. He had some personal problems too with drink which didn't help. He was particularly focused on winning at St Andrew's and you can tell after his approach on 18 how disappointed he was, but this one was Seve's. One of golf's greats indeed. I was absolutely devastated in 2009 when he lost at Turnberry.
@dlamiss5 жыл бұрын
Yes his decline was pretty quick and very sad following this Open although he was unlucky in the US Open in 1987. There were stories alcohol was involved and Watson has admitted himself he liked a drink but hasn't drunk for years. I saw him play on Sunday at Lytham and felt honoured to watch the great man end his career

It's an odd argument to make about a guy who won 8 majors, 3 of which were head to head against Nicklaus (who, I suppose, is an even bigger choke artist having finished 2nd in 19 majors), is unanimously considered the greatest links player ever, and was the world's number one player from 77-84. We all would profit from practicing the choking art. Fact is, all the great players missed plenty of wins by a shot here and there because they were close so often.

It is still so astonishing that in those days the game of golf could be so facinating - and todays golf and golfers do not even come close - - despite the facvt the they all can drive the golf ball near to 400 yards - unfortunately - they all look like week end wrestlers and have the personality of a lump of chese
