funny how Chuck could say that when he had Jeff Kievit playing lead trumpet with his band for years. jeff was the soloist for the Hawthorne muchachos drum and bugle corps

I was on this field in 1984 and like Steve says at 4:26 we were sweating bullets. It was also August in Georgia....that helped too. The best parts of my life was competing from 76-84.

I was in the audience, wearing an off-white Stetson down in front to the side. Do you remember the rain?

Regiment's drop was a technicality. Without the huge Vanguard Debacle in Semifnals, Regiment would not have placed 3rd in Semifinals. They would have been 4th. So, it sucks for them that it appears someone passed them last second, when that's not really the case.

I forgot that only the top 6 corps were broadcast that year. Or was it top 5? Painful. Pray up.

Yeah....probably one of the most painful moment of my life at the time....1 effing tenth away. Even more painful than losing in my ONLY year of Jr corps was losing by so close. Ah well...

Notice the class Garfield has when they win. At attention. Poised. Acting like they've "been there before". When the Blue Devils would win, they would jump around like a bunch of 2 year olds. So classless and haughty. The only corps I've ever seen to that. I was so happy for Garfield Cadets that night.

Different cultures...I kinda like seeing some emotion from the winner. Standing like a statue and not responding to winning a world championship is overrated. Except for that particular night, of course....since I was in BD :(

Different corps do different things, different cultures, I’m sure VK DMs bringing out their lawn chairs for finals retreat probably isn’t the proper thing to do but who cares? It’s band, it’s not even that serious. So if BD chooses to jump and scream when they win let them do it. That’s just how they are.

@@kRod200 When VK's deck chairs were taken away, pretty much everyone on the field wasn't happy with Bob Briske for doing it.

Vanguard and Garfield are the epitome of champions - classy in both victory and defeat.

I always thought so....Gary actually said "what" because he couldn't hear the score. On the other hand, Brent looked like he was going to throw up. I went fro the absolute heights after our run to a hell of a fall emotionally when we were announced in 2nd.
@yesorlando054 жыл бұрын
Unlike BD, The Cadets show nothing but class when they're announced as champion. No jumping around like 10 year olds and freaking out.
@kRod2003 жыл бұрын
Oh come on, you saying people can’t celebrate when they win something that they’ve been working towards for a long time?

So I suppose the US men's hockey team was classless when they beat the Soviets at the 1980 Olympics?? Or any baseball, basketball. or football team when they win their championship? Really?? Speaking as someone who DID lose a title by the barest of margins this very night...had Garfield openly celebrated, it would not have bothered me. LOSING yes....and it did. Still kinda stings almost 40 years later. But them celebrating a hard fought win on a night THEY thought they'd lost (as confirmed by members a number of times since then)? No....that's what happens in competition.
