Last trip was 84, I spent five years there off and on, Expats from Middle East and Oil Rigs workers, Rambo's from Vietnam, Australia and the USA some never left, BJ's was one of the first there he was a Navy sailor, I think he later had a bar on both ends of Beach roads, my first stay was at the weekender hotel , I've forgotten most of the names of the bars,only remember the Marine bar and a few others, I would always leave and go to NaNa hotel in Bangkok when the navy ships came in, A adventure that most men never experience in their lifetime 🥰 and my love for Thailand and the people will never go away.

Ahhh ... those were the days. I first visited Bangkok and Pattaya in 1980 and back then for a young single man it was like Disneyland for Adults. For me the original Marine Bar & Disco on Walking St. (visible in the vid) was THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE. If you experienced it back in the early 80s you'll know what I mean. If you were from the West and hadn't been to Thailand before it seemed surreal, like another world. Mass tourism starting in the 90s has spoiled the country. Families from the Middle East now go to BKK for the shopping malls.

I stayed along Soi Bongkot in the early 80's --plenty of undeveloped 'wild' land and few lights! Scary walking home at times!
@mikemassino8 жыл бұрын
The infrastructure was far better then. One could actually walk on well constructed sidewalks throughout town. Now the sidewalks are rubble. It was also nice to see so many palm trees on Beach Road. It certainly has gone downhill since 1984. Paradise lost.
@gkprivate4334 жыл бұрын
yes. My first visit was 2004 and beach road was still beautiful. Plenty of natural shade trees. The walkway around the point to Naklua was still there. There were flower beds and benches to sit on all along Beach Road. It is so over built now I almost hate it. Two many malls. I don't go to Thailand for big glass malls. I don't shop in malls even when home in the USA. Russian influx was the harbinger of bad things. Then chinese mass tour hoards. Hotels built on every grass plot. No more empty lots anywhere. Hundreds of too many small beer bars that had no customers before COVID. Thais over do everything just like 22 7-11s on the same street. Sad. Glad I did not invest a decade or so ago as I almost did. It still is a fun holiday and I want to go back and spend more time there. The ladies still are great and there are fun things to do. Sad some of the western places have closed. Domocile Austrian restaurant is basically no more. Butchers' are british pub closed. Pig and whistle on its way out. Too many Indian places that clearly do not make any money and are obviously doing illegal things like acting as visa fronts

My first visit was 2018. I had a great time. I do not understand why people are saying "lost paradise". I met a lovely lady and she traveled around the country with me without charging me a dime. I paid her of course for her time and paid her way. I cannot imagine Pattaya any better. I go to Pattaya 2 times per year. Each time I fall in love with a different lovely young lady. One no better or worse than the one before. I will continue to visit as soon as COVID settles down and there is no quarantine. @5:01, I rode that same baht bus in NOV2019. Same driver too.

Thailand just before its peak which IMO was 94 - 2004.
Why is it that now in Pattaya there is electricity cables hanging everywhere especially at head height on every street/power pole but back then they were all where they should be? Anybody else notice this?
@jamesduffy54824 жыл бұрын
Since they created such a mess with the cables they decided now is a good time to fix that and put them under ground.
@sidecar77144 жыл бұрын
It's communication wire for phone, cable and internet.
@thefonzkiss4 жыл бұрын
They’re communication cables not power. And slowly they’re being put underground.

The electric cables are up high where you don't notice them unless they're buzzing/sparking/on fire.
@gavreynolds26894 жыл бұрын
Looks like I was wrong in thinking those cables were for power, thanks for setting me straight to those that replied. They might not be for power but they are still an eyesore and glad to hear the local government there are doing something about it.
