1984 Toyota 4X4 Pickup Rumbling Exhasut & Engine Rev 4WD 22R with Updates

Here is a UPDATE of my 1984 Toyota Pickup Truck. I shot this last week November 29, 2009 around 6:00 pm in my driveway. I have put Dick Cepek 6 3/4 shackles, Pro Comp drop drag link, Trail Gear knuckle rebuild kit, Trail Gear wheel bearings, Roll Bar, header gaskets, exhaust pipe, cherry bomb muffler, chrome exhaust tips, and I Have A Webber Carb On the Way!! Christmas gift from the wife!

Here is a complete list of mods done to my 84 Yota:
Freshly re-built engine, Detroit Lockers, 3" body lift, 3" Rough Country suspension lift, Trail Gear 4.88 Creeper Gears, Trail Gear Knuckle Rebuild kit, Trail Gear Wheel bearings, Pro Comp drop drag link, Dick Cepek 6 3/4" shackles, new exhaust pipe and cherry bomb muffler, 33x12.50x15" Dunlop Mud Rover Tires, Chrome exhuast tips, transfer case seals, Roll Bar, Mid size/Mild cam "some say a towing cam", headder, after market radiator, potentiometer thermostatic controlled cooling fan, Auto Meter Tach, oil gauge, temp gauge, and volt meter, custom rear tube bumper, General Lee CB Radio "45 watts", Wilson 5000 magnet mount CB antenna and probably some more I have forgot to list.

My dad used to have one of these little toyotas, too bad he lent it to my uncle and he treated it like trash. I always loved these trucks despite I'm a JEEP guy, heck I love all 4x4s.

Great video bro. I have the exact a same pick up and this video defenetly makes me want to get mine up to par. I bought it about 3 years ago and have had no regrets buying it and putting money into it. Still holds it's value compared to other cars and trucks. I get hit up at least twice a week by strangers wanting to buy it off me. Not a chance. The gas milage alone pays for itself.

Thanks anyway, i have a weber 32/36 on my 4 runner and i get 18-20 mpg with 4.88 gears and 33'' tires. It runs great, i started it today after sitting for 2 weeks, hit the gas once, and it fired right up. Sweet truck you have. I have some vids on here, check them out.

Thanks for the GREAT comment, I really dunno the history of it other than the previous owner, he was a teen and ran the crap out of it. It looked this good when I bought it from him. I do have 3 or 4 spots of rust above the front windshield and back windshield. I want to get that fixed and if the bed rust out, then flat bed here we come.

The puff of smoke you saw come out of the exhaust is where my stock Asian Carb has a messed up choke and other probs, it loads up and uses the hell out of gas. I have a good ole Webber on the way and that should fix her right up and fix the crappy gas millage and me having to hold the throtle on it when it is cold, as in 32 or 33 degrees outside cold. If I have cranked it and go back to crank it in 3 to 4 days, she will fire right up and idle fine, any more setting than that..no go hold the gas.

Stock vs performance carbs make a huge difference, stock is going for "acceptable" power, where as AM carbs go for efficiency and power...

i got 85 im building up trying to find the fine line between street legal and rock crawler. if i were you tho i would upgrade to crossover steering maybe even high steer too and the powersteering made a huge difference on mine

To be honest, I have no clue on what brand the cam is but the mechanic that rebuilt the engine said it was a mid size cam and the truck runs great! It sucks the fuel like crazy but that is due to both barrells are open and the choke is all screwy. I have a Webber that i will be getting tomorrow "Christmas day" and hipefully I will get it on in the next week or two and Ill make a video of that also and mabey the install.

sounds like something is hitting the frame/body given you have accustom exhaust I would start there. looks the tail pipe is hitting the frame. I'd check the oil, antifreeze tx fluid levels, add as needed. doesn't sound like the timing chain.

It is indeed a cammed out SOHC inline 4 called the 22r, sometimes has an e at the end if its fuel injected.

Dude! That engine sounds lovely! What cherry bomb exhaust you're using? Is it a glass pack, or a the pro? I have a 81' Celica st coupe and would love for it to sound ads mean as your truck, since I have the same 22r engine in it! Beautiful truck by the way! 8^}

I Gotta post mine on here, one of these days. I have the NICEST 85 X-tra-cab probably in the whole USA. HAD it 20 years, ORIG owner. ANYWAY U HAVE to put your CAT back on if U want any POWER 22-R engines NEED BACK-PRESSURE......THEY are NOT V-8,s..... TRUST ME been there done that !!!!

@pettybilt Haven't installed em yet, but I've got the EB 261 cam and their Street / RV head to go on the truck. How do you like the 268? according to their ebay page, the 261 is sportier than the 268, having a little more top-end and a bit of chatter on idle so it doesn't sound stock. Wondering if I am making a good decision by installing these parts

I picked up an '84 single cab, long bed. This truck has issues, head gasket leaks, transmission is stuck in gear, knuckle bearings need rebuilding, wiring is old and all over the place, emergency brake doesn't work; the list goes on. My plans are to rebuild it like this, only paint it cammo. Could you give me some websites that you've ordered from before? I'm having trouble finding any that sell parts. Thanks, Joe

@brandonkr I ran it down the back of the cab and under on the back passenger side to a rubber gromet and cut a x out on the gromet and ran it up that way to the radio.

@96blueball You got that right! I always thought chevy was number one! Until my cusin got his first 4x4 toyota trk! Man! That thing would go throught every thing! They are damn well built trks! Just got a 85 4x4 extra cab with the 22re. I think I paid a little 2 much 2250.00 its got a lot of miles 300,000. But thats ok,its got a good frame and the motor run good with no smoke and its a automatic. may replace it with a standard trans. Its stock, I was wondering what size tires to put on it.

Buy some POR15. Take the bed off, flip it upside down and coat it. Then do the same with the rockers, then go over the POR15 with herculiner :)

Nice truck, you should see MINE, I got The NICEST, Baddest 85 red x-tracab in the US, You won't get any POWER unless you put the CAT and a decent muffler back on, trust me Iv'e Been there, done that......Iv'e been building toyota's for 30-years :) ....

Alot of people fight over chevy and ford lol they forget about the toyotas. There so underestamated (or however you speel) there more reliable and can ride circles around both kind of trucks in the mud lol o yea great looking truck by the way

@MrJSchiedel Check out LC Engineering's website, they have everything for these engines.. even turbo/supercharger kits, exhausts, headers, cams, cranks, complete heads, and even complete engines/blocks. If they're out of your price range (They are high priced lol) I believe that UAP/NAPA sells quite a few parts for these. I just replaced the clutch master cylinder, both alternator and p/s belts, rear shaft U-joint, and ordered an oil pump through NAPA. No issues.

I have a 84 pickup with similar engine mods but mine is bored out to a 3.0 and wont idle cold for the life of itself i think i need to burn a hotter ignition anyone know if that will help with cold idle?

It's a 4 cylinder, you can even hear it. Sounds like an inline 4 to me.

@jason127x99 I would rather pay a little to much for something you know is worth the price then to pay to less and break down on the way home. Im actually fixing to buy a 83 toyota sitting on 35'' inch tires. It has a 3'' inch body life and a 6'' inch suspension on it. That thing is a monster. They only thing different is the guy put a 305 small block v8 in it lol so there goes my mpg's hahah but ummm i seen them trucks look good with 33's on it, I really wouldnt go any less.
