Thank you for this blast from the past! It's very interesting to compare those days to nowadays; most of the tram and trolleybus lines have been discontinued - minibuses (and the metro as well, thank goodness) are the norm now. The streets were full of public transport vehicles back then and only some private vehicles, as it was expensive to buy one, plus the long waiting period to get one to begin with...but now you have huge numbers of private vehicles plying the the main streets and boulevards, causing traffic jams during rush hours. It's sad to think how many tram and trolleybus networks have been closed down in the cities across the former Soviet Union, and THEY would have been the environmentally friendly solution to counter global warming. Well, capitalism unfortunately doesn't favour public transport - it lacks the incentives for making profit.

That's A LOT of buses and trams, was Soviet public transport very reliable?
@boonekeller52753 жыл бұрын
Yes, as cars were very expensive to a planned economy under siege by western countries, citizens were expected to not own cars, thus having very relaible public tranist. Also having buses in mixed traffic was better in the USSR or other socialist countries as cities were not infested by them, making them faster and more dependable.

@@boonekeller5275 In a video by both City Beautiful and Ecko Gecko, they explained how soviet urban planning made neighborhoods very walkable but I've also heard that even Soviet authorities planned for car cemtric design since they predicted to have as many cars as the US and thus demolishing historic areas for future cars

Everything Soviet was very important. This transport worked until the 2000s and even 2010s.
