Pac 10 was strong this year. Washington beating Oklahoma, and UCLA beating Miami

That '84 'Canes team had the unfortunate load on their shoulders in those days - being the defending national champions! They finished 8-5! And it very easily could have been 11-2! Their last three losses were by a combined six points, including the complete meltdown against Maryland! Yes they might have underachieved but it isn't like it is today! Teams now just automatically reload and plug five-star guys into those open slots left by graduation or turning pro! Back then it wasn't the case so defending a national title much more difficult

I see your point, but, traditional powers like Alabama, USC, Penn State, Ohio State, etc. always reloaded. They plugged 5 star recruits in to replace graduates every years. That's why they were traditional powers. Miami wasn't a traditional power at that point in time.

@@eugenemcgirt2357 ohio st I will give you. The rest all had ALOT of down years from the 80s till early 2000s. USC spent an entire 2 decades not competing for natl titles. Penn state was up and down for like 15 years. Alabama had years like 89 93 94...but were downtrodden for a good while till saban.

Miami also had a lot of dissension in the coaching staff in 1984. Because the change came so late Johnson was forced to keep the coaching staff from 1983 in place and some of those coaches(especially on defense) wanted the head coaching job and were a tad miffed when they didn’t get it. In addition Johnson’s philosophy of defense(Miami 4-3 as it came to be called) versus the 5-2 of the previous staff created a lot of issues. Once Johnson was free to get his own staff in (Especially on defense) things turned around quickly on the field for Miami

Weird to think JJ was 0-3 in Miami bowl games at one time. More than compensated afterwards.

I had forgotten that the Bruins also beat them in a bowl game. The commentary for most of the "convicts" games, touts the team's unbeaten streaks, but seldomly mentions their dismal bowl record. It's really too bad that during the 80's, they never played BYU "The Pharisees" which would've matched two programs that thrived on disrespectful and unsportsmanlike behavior towards it's rivals. I would've loved to have watched them demolish one another.

You edited that nonsense? Those "convicts won multiple national championships and dominated the landscape during those years. You must be an FSU fan! Stay classy!

And remember, BYU initially was going to turn down their "mandatory contract" to play in the Holiday Bowl to play in the Fiesta Bowl (which likely would have pitted BYU against Miami) But the WAC mandated BYU play in the Holiday Bowl, BC turned down a $500K payout to play BYU, and ultimately Michigan was left to fall victim to the Cougs. Still, ever imagine if BYU did in fact turn down the Holiday Bowl to play Miami in the Fiesta Bowl again, and Miami ended up winning?
