I remember in first grade, my dad bought a brand spanking new 1985 S15 4X4 extended cab 2.8 liter 5 speed. It was dark blue and white. I remember riding around in the back jump seats with my baby brother, or riding in the bed when he put the canopy on it. I loved that truck!!!

Actually the OEM Delco stereo radios in 80s GM cars had a great sound with lots of power, no need for any tacky after market head unit. This one is highly optioned, look at all the rows of option codes on the inside glove box door.

Yes! They were rated anywhere from 75 to 100 watts depending on the model. They sounded really clear and when paired to Delco 6x9 speakers they had great bass.

once I was able to score a Delco setup for less than a new Crutchfield setup plus shipping--just scratched the name off it and installed it in an older hot rod and it did a fine enough job during the cassette tape era.

I currently drive a 93 S10 Maxi-Cab Tahoe trim. 4.3 with 4l60e 4x4, also came with a factory hard bed cover. Just hit 150,000 miles and fairly rust free. I love it and try to get my friends in the rear jump seats all the time.

The 4.3L V6 made it a completely different truck. I worked at the dealer in 1987 and 1988 when the switch happened and it was night and day. Once we had 4.3L trucks on the lot nobody would buy a 2.8L model.

I have the 1985 Chevrolet version of this truck. The S10. Bought it for 150 dollars from the dealer that I worked for. Plain 4cyl with a 4 speed manual. No power accessories. Replaced the drivetrain with a 383 stroker and a 5 speed manual transmission and a locking differential. Fun to drive.

I have a 1993 S-10 (1993 was the last year of the square body S-10) that I bought new. And it still looks new. The odometer has just over 30,000 miles on it. It has been garaged it's entire life, and was never used as a truck, or even for transportation. Pretty much all the mileage is highway mileage. It's original tan (GM called it Khaki, paint code 52) paint is mint, and being from AZ there is not a speck of rust on it. It was originally a base model with the 2.8L TBI engine, 5 speed manual, A/C, power steering, power brakes, 205/75-14 tires, black painted bumpers, no trim. Two door standard cab, two wheel drive, short bed. Over the past 3 decades I have extensively modified it. It now has a carbureted 350 V8, still has a 5 speed, now with a Hurst T handle shifter, chrome/black 3 spoke steering wheel, aftermarket A/C, original multicolored tan/brown interior was redone in black, stereo delete, custom gauges, custom built rear axle with 3.88 gears and rear disc brakes, all new suspension (it has not been lowered) 225/70-14 RWL BFG Radial T/A tires in the front, huge 275/60-15 Radial T/A tires in the rear, on American Racing Torque Thrust gray 4 spoke wheels, a cowl hood with racing stripes, hood pins, "cowl induction" emblems, chrome front and rear bumpers with no rub strips, chrome fender trim, a satin black '91/'92 grille with custom chrome trim, chrome mirrors, a real dual exhaust with glasspack mufflers and chrome tips under the rear bumper. It has a black vinyl tonneau bed cover, and '71/'72 Chevelle "HEAVY CHEVY" emblems on the sides, front and rear. I used to own a 1972 Chevelle HEAVY CHEVY back in the mid '80s, and wanted to copy the look. Since the S-10 body was the same from 1982-1993, it looks just like an '82. I customized it to get as close to an early '70s muscle car look as possible. It has historic vehicle plates and is registered and insured as a collector vehicle.

I'm having a flashback to my first brand new truck, a 1988 S-10EL (Economy Leader). It had exactly two add on options; power brakes and an AM radio. The factory threw in the Sunshine stripes graphics and the style side wheels for free to get people to bite on the 2.73:1 rear axle. While it's the most gutless vehicle I've ever owned, it also got the best milage of anything I've ever owned. My current daily driver is a 2000 GMC Jimmy that can crack 17 mpg (4.3V6); that 2.5 Iron Duke could easily clear 35 mpg on the highway.

I never seen a gypsy truck never heard of it. So thank you. I noticed the matching graphics on the door panels. Heck those seats would work nice and other applications. I've got a very nice GMC short box said go right on there always use it for a pickup bed trailer when the front end got cremated around 60,000 miles on the truck. I remember when the s10s and s15s were new as well. Can I say why am I able to pay so much money for what they call the truck. Understood later when I grow my friends 4.3 S10 4 wheel drive. Very respectable. I bought a little later model one that they put a dumping bed on and I use it for light duty stuff around the farm. They are great little trucks. I had a '93 Sonoma (2wd, 2.8v6, 5-spd manual extended cab) bought new. Had it for 7 years and 100k miles. Never a had a single issue with it. Often times I wish I never traded it in. Rarely see this body style on the road anymore and when I do, they're all beat to hell.

Steve, you may want to check the VIN on this one. It isn't a 1985 model. 1985 S-10's and S-15's still had round gauges, and it was the final year for the carbureted 2.8 V6. GM switched to fuel injection for the 1986 model year. So this is likely 1986 or later if my thinking is correct. Still an awesome video though! Thank you for all that you do!

My grandfather had one of these except his was white and the extended cab. I remember him telling me that he did a serpentine belt conversion on his and it ran “smooth as butter” as he put it 😂😂. I still got the brochure for it, it’s very fun to go through.

There is nothing to restore. The best part is the interior. I have an 89 with a 2.8 rebuilt most the whole truck. But down in Texas I had a full truck to rebuild not 30% truck and 70% rust. Now if you have a solid body the interior is a very nice transplant

That is a 1986 - first year of fuel injection for the 2.8 and the raised pod around the instrumentation. I like the 1982 - 85 dash better. I remember the day my late father bought his first, and only new vehicle, a 1982 Chevrolet S-10 Tahoe package truck. It was beautiful.

No, Insta-Trac was available starting in the 1983 model year. Also in 1982, it was only pickups. The SUVs arrived for the 1983 model year. Others are correct, no Olympics in 1985, only in 1984 and typically Buick was the sponsor (as you pointed out in other videos featuring 1984 Buicks). No, this isn't a 1985 model year, it's a 1987. That's why "when you get the SPID, we're glad you did", and here we go with the VIN for the win: 1GT for US made GMC truck, C for 4,001 to 5,000# Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with hydraulic brakes, T for compact chassis 4WD, 1 for 1/2 ton rating, 4 for two door cab, R for 2.8L V6 with throttle body fuel injection, aka RPO code "LL2", 5 is a check digit, H for 1987 model year (1985 would be an "F"), 2 for Moraine Truck and Bus Assembly, Moraine, OH and the rest is the production sequence. The 3.4 was a factory crate engine for the 2.8 at one time. I always wanted to drop a good 3.8 in one, but they have mostly disappeared due to rust where I live.

I’ve always thought this generation of S10/S15 vehicles were very handsome, with my favorite version being the S10 Blazer with four doors that came out later in the production run. Would love to have a pristine example in red and white two-tone as a fun little piece of my collection! In 1997, I took a new job where I lost the company car of my previous position and had to buy a new vehicle very quickly. I decided I would get a small pickup and my choices were quickly narrowed down to a S10, a Ranger, or the little Nissan pickup of the era. After test drives in all three, I decided that the Ranger was the most “truck like” of all the examples and the rest is history! The little Ranger I bought was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned and is still being driven today by my sister-in-law as a daily commuter! I still have a Ranger in my collection and likely always will - I LOVE THOSE LITTLE TRUCKS…….!!!!!

I had a 1993 Mazda B2300 pickup that I drove from San Francisco to New York and back in August 2012, with two dogs and no air conditioning, 6,500 miles round trip. Drove it on the Bonneville Salt Flats the day before Speed Week at over 90 mph. Replaced the Mazda with an extended cab 1997 Ford Ranger w/ 3.0 V6 and ultimately replaced that with a 2007 Ford Ranger w/ 4.0 V6. Love those Rangers and wish they'd make a small truck again.

I had an '89 S10 4wd (T10, actually). 89 was one year only for the transfer case and speedo drive, 88 was different with a cable drive and 90 had a different dash altogether. 2.8, 5 speed, a great truck with over 315,000 miles when I finally junked it.

Yes, that eventually became HB Chevrolet at 105-20 Queens Blvd, which is now Sunrise Chevrolet of Queens. It still retains the same phone number and address from back then.

Then you don't remember right. The exhaust manifold cracked on most of those trucks. I also worked at a dealer in 1987/1988 but I was front of house handling the customers before the car went into the shop, not a service writer, but on the used car lot. We had to fix a lot of them and new truck buyers were very unhappy with them. The 4.3 was the savior of the S-10.

The 2.8, in a Pontiac Fero was pretty fast. I worked on a lot of those in the early 90s. Used they were cheap. Most people didn't take very good care of the engine. A friend of mine and I took engines out of front wheel drive cars, and put in the Fero and they worked very well. The Pontiac iron Duke engine was a good engine

I had a '93 S-10 4wd with a TBI 4.3 5 speed. That was the best truck I ever owned and wish I still had it. The maroon paint wasn't the best quality because it was always prone to fade away but a quick buff it would look better. It was the Tahoe package but ac delete with manual windows and locks bench seat with a sliding rear window. Always averaged 25 mpg on the highway and sometimes close to 30. The square bodies always look great to this day.

'82-'85 had a different dashboard and door panels, thats the '86-'93 interior. either someones misslead you on the year of that truck, swapped the cab, or swapped the VIN. The "S" stood for Shreveport where the S series Chevrolet & GMC trucks were manufactured. The 4.3 V-6 really boosted sales for all of the "S" series GM vehicles including the S Blazers.

I think the 1st generation S10s were made in Moraine, OH. The second generation moved to Shreveport when Moraine switched to S10 Blazer, Jimmy, and Bravada.

The Insta-trac 4-wheel drive system was out in '83 on these, also...the black wheel well moldings ("lips") were optional, not standard, they were RPO code "B74", I had an '83 4x4 with them.

Small trucks have always been a soft spot for me and I guess it would be in part because of "Back to the Future" and that Black Toyota 4x4 just looked so good! Small trucks really have a rich history, not sure they are ever given their due, but they should be. I still drive an S10 myself. 98 though.

i had a 2001 s-10 with the 4.3 great little truck! i still see alot of these trucks on the road down south off course where the rust witch isn't present

I drove a 1993 S-10 extended cab from 1995-2003. It had the “Tahoe” trim package with a 4.3 liter V-6.

I had a black one with red interior, It was a 2 wheel drive, I put a set of Corvette ralley's on it, I loved that little truck, totaled it out hitting a deer at 70 mph, really made a mess! They still seem new to me to, I worked at a GM dealership in 83-85 and we sold them new!

I had a 1988 S-15 , same color blk - red interior. The only new vehicle I have ever owned. Had a Leer silver fiberglass cap .

A buddy I consider a brother to me had a 89 GMC t15 Jimmy gypsy part time 4x4 th700r4 digital dash no ac pwr window and locks,it was a a metallic grey and silver with a two stripe red pinstripe, and leather wrapped steering wheel similar to my steering wheel in my early 94 Chevy Silverado extended cab short bed Z71.

I lived a stones throw from Moraine Truck and Bus where these were built. (Dayton Ohio) now that factory is owned and run by fuyao glass. Can guarantee you that one of my friends or family had hands on that very S15.

Those under hood lamps have mercury switches which added a lot of cost and complexity to the disposal of the thousands of flooded vehicles removed from New Orleans and the surrounding area following the catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Katrina.

I had a 1985 GMC S-15 mine had two tone Brown/Beige Mine had bucket seats 2.8L V-6 Auto PS/PB Tilt wheel Cruise Am/FM cassette Symphony Sound Power Mirrors Power Locks Power Windows Power driver's seat Sun roof cloth int long bed Dual tanks sliding rear window paid 1500.00 for it in 1994.The 2.0 was disconnected in 1984 and these had a 4.3L Oldsmobile Diesel engine from 1984-1986 rare option. The 4.3L Diesel was not ordered very much and they quit it in 1986.

That's the 2nd generation of interior in s series trucks. That dash was new in MY1986. MY1985 still had the round speedo/tach. 1986 engine options were the Iron Duke 2.5L 4 cylinder and the 2.8L 60° V6

I love these mini square bodied pickups. I drive an 88 GMC S15 short bed 2WD with a mild SBC 350. Lots of fun and really a cool "sleeper".

Nope they make a kit from advanced adapters bolts right in. If u have the 4.3 the trans will even bolt up...

@@mexicanspec Speedway Motors sells the engine mount adapters and headers. No cutting at all. Use the existing automatic trans too.

Steve, the green international step van is just like the ones which used to deliver the mail in my neighborhood in the late '60s through mid '70s. That one is righthand drive, so maybe it was a USPS vehicle too. I think the one next to it is a Metro, like what they used on the TV show, SWAT?

S10's and Ford Rangers were the go to vehicle for a lot of fleets. Great for homeowners that didn't need a full size pick up. I think dropping the mini truck was a bad idea, especially with the prices of gas. The Colorado is an ok truck, but too full of crap you don't need, and tend to not live very long. I miss my 91, 4 cyl, 5 speed, it was fun, and worked when I needed it to.

Also the Colorado and the Canyon will set you back a lot of bucks because the idea of the "value" pickup is totally lost with most car makers today. Pickup trucks back then were for utility and doing work/hauling. Now they are still "work truck" versions available, but they are expensive as well.

@@googleusergp Agreed. My son owns a small contracting business. He has an 86 Dodge and an 84 F150 for company vehicles because there is no way he is spending $40,000 on a new truck that won't last. Plus he doesn't have to gouge his customers so he can make his truck payments. You'd also be surprised how many people appreciate an older truck. He always gets the "oh, I had one of those 20 years ago".

@@allhailinternalcombustion GM realizes that trucks are the "new golden goose" and that they can (in theory) lag behind a bit and they are all profit, so that is why they are pushing them over cars (as well as the other automakers). We need a good mix of cars and trucks in the market. Not everyone needs (or wants) a truck. I probably should have one in my fleet as I find a lot of "curbside" finds that I fix up and use.
