I love Deborah (especially her nice personality) BUT to be honest Miss Spain Teresa Sanchez should have won. I remember to this day when there was a picture in my local newspaper of Yvonne Ryding crowning Deborah stating "Yvonne Ryding looks from her back much more beautiful than her successor. The new MU looks like 13 in a dozen".

Puerto Rico, Spain and Zaire were my favorites. I loved Deborah Carthy-Deu. There was something about her smile. Although Spain was stunning, I think the judges made the right decision.

Spain was acting like a giddy little girl while Zaire looked like a teen contestant. They picked Deborah in the end because she exuded a poise and maturity over the other four finalists.

You missed the boat entirely. Barker was actually poking fun at himself, due to Miss Zaire being very well spoken (in French). I detect a bit of racism in your comment, but no racism was effected by Barker. Everyone enjoyed her interview, including the judges who gave her a very high score. Back then, in 1985, the race card wasn't being thrown up constantly the way it is now.

If you replay the moments just before the crowning and after, then look at some of the contestants in the background, and then look at their reactions afterwords - its more than apparent that they were hoping for Miss Spain. Many of them were not only shocked, but their clapping was very slow and almost as if they had to clap. It was a horrible decision, and many of the contestants knew it was a horrible decision

Miss Puerto Rico didn’t deserve it at all. No beauty, no charisma… Spain was much better and she had the highest score of the Top5. The newspapers at that time criticized the decision as well. Terrible. Miss Norway deserved the Top 5 and did not get there.

Yo no entiendo cómo ganó Puerto Rico si quedó quinta en la entrevista personal y la mayoría aquí dice que lo que le hizo ganar a Deborah fue su personalidad y estilo. En traje de baño la puertorriqueña se ubica en la cuarta posición. Sin embargo, Deborah se ubica primera en traje de noche. La más hermosa no era, no tenía la mejor personalidad, y tampoco tenía el mejor cuerpo. Lo que la favoreció para ganar fue el horrible vestido de Miss España, el habet obtenido el más alto puntaje en traje de noche y el haber respondido mejor en la pregunta final. Entonces no digan que ganó por tener la mejor personalidad. Y la más bella tampoco era. Ganó porque esa fue su noche y la suerte la favoreció. Bueno por ella. Felicitaciones Miss Puerto Rico.

People who complain that Spain should have won are ignoring the Evening Gown competition and the Final Interview. Spain's dress was a DISASTER. It showed a complete lack of taste. And her answer to the final question was a non-answer--no substance at all. The judges would have been negligent to give Spain the crown at this point.

Deborah, like Dayanara 8 years later, was slow and steady during the competition, and made the judges noticed her when it counted. The fact that Spain, the front runner, ended up 6th place in the evening gown competition showed that the opinions of the judges had started to change. Her immature behavior and her answer to the final question opened the door for Deborah to get some judges to vote for her. I wouldn't be surprised if Spain actually got the most #1 votes but several ranked her lower like 3rd or 4th while but Deborah got enough #2s to edge her out with a lower cumulative ranking.
