I have an 1984 pristine condition 22R, I found it in California and bought it from a guy that only used it for camping, not abused, no rust, and with a little bit of love I got to restore it, and I simply love it!! I own a 2019 BMW X5 and a 1982 Mercedes 300D, but the car that I enjoy the most driving is my faithful 22R, I use it as a daily driver, it came with A/C, so it has everything I need! I'm planning on lift the suspension but at the same time I want to keep it stock. Amazing video and congratulations on that beautiful truck! Cheers from Guatemala :)

RyanKC when I bought mine in 2010 (85 extra cab) it had 308k on it. Some didn't take care of the coolant system and between the head and block it got a cavity which mixed my oil and coolant together. Still drove home. Got a rebuilt motor and she's going strong again.

I hate to but my '92 Toyota 4x4 pickup is going to the scrapyard. The rust on mine is worse than even what he showed here, the torsion bars broke off the frame, the frame is crumbled to dust, the body is rusted to dust, and to top it off the engine threw a rod and you can put your fist through the block.

I had an '85' - 2 wheel drive, single cab, 22r engine (best engine ever). I stuck a 2" lift kit, extended the steering bar, and fit 30's with a little cut of the panel on the back side. I put Nerfs all around. t was a tank. It was so lite I pulled out 4x4's from the mud. I loved my truck!!! It was red. Back to red. Nice wrap on the pickup. I'm in eastern Australia, have had a 1987 YN58R Hilux Xtra Cab since 2013. 2WD 2.2 4Y with super-rare Aisin-Warner 03-71 3p + OD automatic. 4Y is a common forklift engine. Absolutely runs out of puff at 4000rpm, but that's not a bad thing. These low-revving, madly-overbuilt engines are known to run >500,000km without rebuild in the Hilux. Mine is running on LPG Autogas, which can't wash oil off the cylinder walls, so engines last much longer. Nearly all taxis in Aus run on LPG. There are million-km examples of 4Ys on Autogas. Mine is just getting started with 240,000km (149,000mi). Rust is just not a thing in Australia provided you don't live near the coast. Worthwhile mods include removing the clutch fan and using a 16 inch electric fan instead. When you only have 91hp to start with, a 15hp parasitic loss at 3500rpm is noticeable in acceleration and fuel consumption. As you note, just keep replacing the wear parts and you will have one of these literally forever.

I bought a 1985 SR5 Xtracab new in 1985. There was fuel injection on the 1984 SR5, as well but the head of the 22RE engine was redesigned in 1985, giving it about 10 h.p. more than the 1984 model. I had the rare metallic sky blue color, which was a $399.00 special paint appearance package. I still have my original window sticker from 1985, detailing all of the options, and prices. No, I don't have it anymore, I sold it decades ago. Great vlog, about a high-demand classic truck. It is actually about the 3rd generation of the truck from the mid 70's.

I had an 82 hi lux with a 7 foot bed. To this day that was my favorite truck of all the trucks I have owned. I miss the manual shifting transfer case and manual locking hubs with a straight axle and 410 gears. That little truck was a warrior that would take me anywhere and get me back without any troubles. One thing I did was buy an aftermarket luxury high back buckets with a fold down console. Best investment to cushion the stuff ride.

My grandfather bought an '84 2wd DLX Xtra Cab automatic slightly used in 1986. It was by far his favorite vehicle; the one he called his 'old friend.' He generally bought and kept newer vehicles but he kept this one and an '91(with only about 30K on the clock) he used at a second home out of state. It was the source of many a childhood memory. When he passed away last year the truck went to me(an '80s Toyota enthusiast who mostly lusted after their sports cars like the Supra and Celica Alltrac), a little worse for wear but still running strong with only 135K on the clock. I've rebuilt the A/C system, carb, and several other minor things and it's served me beautifully as a daily driver and parts/engine hauler for my other projects. I can't think of a better all-round truck.

I bought an 85 Toyota Xtra Cab 2WD with the 4 cyl carb, 5 speed transmission and tachometer. Had it 6 years, probably 125,000 miles on it, traded it off for a Camby, should had held on to it, it had 4 more owners, including my Toyota Mechanic that knew the last owner. Finally snapped the frame carrying a full load of firewood with 460,000 miles on it. Original engine, still didn't burn any oil. Rust was the only thing that could kill them as long as you kept the oil & filter changed, lubed and did basic maintenance on them. Had an 91, 95, and currently daily driving an 2000 Tacoma with 231,000+ miles up here in Western Upstate New York State, it's rusty but still passed NYS Inspection this year. Still runs great. I've owned it 12 years, it came out of Virginia so that's helped it survive the NYS Salt so far. When my 95 wouldn't pass NYS Inspection anymore due to rotted frame, my mechanic gave me $500 for it and it got a new life as a dirt packer truck at the track he raced 3/4 midgets until the frame finally broke in half 7 years later! Love these small Toyota pickups, 2wd works fine on the roads in winter up here as long as you put good snow tires and 200 pounds of weight over the rear axle and snow tires. Never gotten stuck yet! I've had great luck with my 4 Toyota Hilux/Tacoma trucks and 3 Toyota cars. Been driving them since 1983. 40 years of happy driving Toyotas!

Great video! My parents have had a 1998 Hilux SR5 2.7 petrol (3RZ-FE) since brand new, longer than I have been alive. It has never broken down, in 25 years and 280,000KMs. In 2019, my father and I supercharged the 3RZ with the TRD/Eaton MP62 supercharger and had a Haltech Elite 550 fitted, on a totally unopened engine with routine maintenance, and otherwise original driveline. It's still going strong, with a recent re-tune with larger injectors, resulting in a 50% increase in power and torque compared to the stock figures.

I had a 85 2 wheel drive pick up. It was a lemon- kept getting rear axle seal leaks which ruined the rear brakes. I traded it in for a 4x4 1992 Toyota pickup. After the differential was overhauled and still was extremely loud, I traded it in for a 2019 Tacoma 2 wheel drive. I had around 230,000 miles on the 92 pickup. I still miss it.
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
John axle seal leaks can be caused by a clogged breather. When the diff gets warm and fluid/air needs to expand, a plugged breather will send the fluid through the axle seal. My 94 land cruiser had that problem.

Such a great truck. I was born in 85 and my dad had the 85 4cyl 2wd Toyota until he bought a new one in 88, which was the 1989 sr5 4x4 with the chrome package and the “blue force” paint job on the side. It was blue and I remember it having a chrome front brush guard and the chrome KC light bar and that thing was tough. I learned how to drive stick on that and my dads 97 Celica but I’ll never forget the truck. It lasted us 300k miles and then he gave it to my sister who managed to ruin it. My dad regrets to this dad doing that. Glad to see others appreciate this great truck. Rode many miles sitting in that truck manually rolling that window up and down. 😂

I had a rwd 88 pickup and in comparison this 85 is really equipped. Mine had a vinyl bench seat, not cloth buckets. If my wife was driving (happened once) my nose was near the windshield. It didn't have A/C, opening rear window, intermittent wipers, tachometer, or even a cigarette lighter. What it did have was an odometer, gas gauge, temp gauge, and locking gas cap cover. It wasn't fast but it got 25 mpg.

I had a clean 87 4x4 trd standard cab. Sold it a year or so ago for $15 more than it sold for at the dealership in 1987. The ones that go for 20k-3k0+ tick all the boxes like 1985 with solid axle, fuel injected, xtra cab, zero frame or body rust, zero blowby, timing chain guides replaced with steel, no rust under carpet where driver's left foot sits, no previous restoration work, etc. I loved that thing and would like to own one again as a project car, but 1) some oem parts are starting to get harder to find (and many cosmetic items are impossible to replace) and 2) safety concerns become unjustifiable. I got a 2020 4runner as a good compromise between rugged reliability and safety.

My dad owned an 85 for a long time. He had the diesel engine one which he had to custom order directly from japan. That thing started and ran for years until the frame split in half going over a railroad crossing. No match for the truck however because he just stuck some shims between the cab and the bed and that baby kept on going.

I’ve had a few Hilux’s over the last 30 years. A common modification in the UK was to install a Range Rover V8 and jack them up.

That sounds pretty kickass

I’ve also fitted a Ford 351 with C4 and a Chevy 350 with TH350 into a couple; both using Advance Adaptors to install the Toyota t/cases. I used to work in a garage that made street monsters - mainly modifying Toyotas, but also Nissan’s, Suzuki’s and Mitsubishi’s.

@BLKSTONE4WD4 жыл бұрын
@@6thGearGarage yeah they are pretty rare trucks to find, either a Hardbody or Pathfinder will be a good choice, although the Pathfinder does do a little better off road because of the factory suspension setup. Good luck to you I hope you do find a clean low mile one, would be sweet content on your channel.👍🏼

Those smoking windows in the front next to rear view mirrors are pretty sweet. The truck I was driving at my last job had them and I would love to still have those as an option. Unfortunately smoking is now so socially unacceptable that manufactures have completely done away with not only smoking windows, but ash trays, as well as cigarette lighters in just about all new cars and trucks. instead of ash trays we now get wireless charging pads and instead of cigarette lighters we get usb plug ins such a shame
