Its really amazing to think especially considering that they made the schedules according to how your team finished in your division. 1st & 4th would play the other 1st & 4th place teams. 2nd & 3rd would play the other 2nd & 3rd place teams. 5th place would play 5th place twice and all the teams of the division with 4 teams. Amazing to think they wouldn't have finished 1st in the same year and especially 2nd or 3rd the same year.

Hard to believe the only Dolphin highlight of any significance since Superbowl VIII Jan-1974 was the defeat of the undefeated Bears later on in the 1985 season. I loved the Dolphins as a first-second grader 71/72/73. From the class of 83 we would get Elway,s 2 Superbowl wins late 1990,s.

Probably the reason Denver and Miami met only twice during that time, is because back then scheduling was based on where a team finished in their division of their conference the previous year to determined whom they would play the next season. There where 3 divisions in each conference. Two of them in each conference had five teams in the divisions and AFC Central and NFC West had 4 teams in the division. If a team finished first in the division they would be matched up with the other 1st and 4th place finishers in the other divisions of their conference And the 1st place finishers would play teams 1 thru 4 in the 5 team division of opposite conference. (example: teams 1 thru 4 of NFC East vs. Teams 1 thru 4 from the AFC East). Match-ups of AFC vs. NFC were done on a rotational basis every 3 years. If a team finished 2nd in the division of their conference, they'd be matched up with the 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the conference. As well as playing teams 1 thru 4 in the opposite conference. If a team finished 4th in the division they'd be matched up with 1st and 4th place finishers in the division of the conference and teams 1 thru 4 in the opposite conference. If a team finished fifth in the five team division of the conference they'd play the other 5th place finisher in the division of the conference twice and would play the teams in a 4 team division of the conference. The 5th place finishers would also play the other 5th place finishers in the opposite conference. Keep in mind teams in the same division of their conference played each other twice. That format has since changed due to expansion, realignment and going from 3 divisions to 4 in each conference. Scheduling is now done on rotational basis. Meaning within the conference they rotate every 3 years. AFC vs. NFC they rotate every 4 years. With the exception of 2 games that is based on where your team finished in the division.
