How come Dig Dug's sequel get to release in the U.S while Hopping Mappy just stayed in Japan? Hopping Mappy is sooo much better than Dig Dug 2. Dig Dug 2 is quite frustrating and not even quite as good as the original Dig Dug, while Hopping Mappy on the other hand is a really great and addicting game, heck, I'll say it's almost at the same level as amazing as the original Mappy. As a matter of fact, I find the Mappy series so much better than the Dig Dug series anyway. It boggles my mind that Mappy's popularity is down to obscurity, while Dig Dug gets all the fame alongside with Pacman. Mappy deserves to be as popular as Dig Dug, Galaga, and Pacman. This shows how cruel this world can be. As a huge Mappy fan, I could never understand why the Mappy series doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
@ethanc.86833 жыл бұрын
I like Mappy too the problem is that Mappy didn't do well in America but in Japan Mappy was a success and popular which spawned 2 games only for Japan Mappy Land and this game Hopping Mappy
@retrofan49633 жыл бұрын
@@ethanc.8683 Cool to know you also enjoy Mappy too :) Yeah that's true, Mappy not being successful internationally hurt Mappy a lot. Which is what didn't happen to Galaga, Dig Dug, and of course Pacman. That's why I find this so frustrating, because the Mappy series is legit a really great series. All the Mappy games are really fun, great, and addictive. Since Mappy only found success in Japan, it seems that Namco has no faith in this series to continue and stop at Mappy Arrangement, which is a shame because the Mappy series has lot of potential to grow in a modern gaming age in the same way like Pacman, Mario, and Sonic, but Namco didn't give Mappy a chance. On the bright side though, Mappy is getting more of a cult following these days, there's hope for Namco reviving the Mappy series in a surprise fashion, and all the Mappy games being ported to modern consoles one day. Hopefully, that'll happen.

Hopping Mappy should've at-least be included in Namco Museum Vol.3 for PS1. Heck, even NM vol.3 is aware of its existence and does include Mappy hanging around the museum as if Hopping Mappy is originally intended to be in this specific compilation. I mean it makes sense, the original Mappy is included in Namco Museum Vol.2, Hopping Mappy being included in Vol.3 would be the next logical step, but that's my theory though. What's even more frustrating is that Hopping Mappy was re-released only in Japan on the Wii's Virtual Console, not internationally :(

To me, they're both really great games. Hopping Mappy is going more with a different gameplay style and mechanics while retaining the same basic concept and rules of the original Mappy. Mappy-Land on the other hand focus more of expanding the Gameplay style and mechanics of the original Mappy, while adding its own twist of it. I feel Hopping Mappy is to Super Mario Bros 2 USA, while Mappy-Land is to Super Mario Bros 3.
