1986 playoffs game 4 Capitals at Rangers (OT thriller)

After falling behind Washington 2 games to 1, the Rangers badly needed a game four win at home.
They got it with another memorable come-from-behind high scoring OT winner similar to game 1. This win would be the turning point of the series, as they would go on to win both games 5 & 6.
The OT starts at 1:31:07 for those who want to skip ahead.
Rangers classic edited rebroadcast from the 2005 lockout year. Missing about a third of the game, I would guess.

Wow this is my FAVORITE RANGERS TEAM! I remember listening to these games as a kid on a little transistor radio cuz we didn't have cable TV at the time jumping on the bed whenever they scored and crying whenever they got eliminated by those Canadians almost like every year

As a Caps fan, it's very sad to watch this game. This was essentially the height of a very good Caps mid 80's team (3rd year in a row they finished top 5 in the League - 2nd year in row at 3rd overall). After this year they started trending downward. They could never get it done in the playoffs - what might have been :(

Prophetic Sam mentions Bobby carpenter’s goal output dropped to 27 from the previous seasons 53. Wish Espo in the booth heeded that message and didn’t make the rueful trade of Miller and Ridley for carpenter.

2nd worst trade in rangers history, worst: hodge for mddleton. Ironically, esposito was involved in both. He insisted he needed hodge to become a productive player!! with the rangers in 1976!

That was the worst trade he ever made. Even in his rookie year you could see what a smart player Ridley was.

Dopey Espo, great player, ok announcer, HORRIFIC GM, ruined team for a few years until Neil Smith got there. Miller and Ridley hands down worst Ranger trade of my lifetime.

i was listening to this on the radio because we didn't have cable until a couple of years later. it was deafening when the puck went in. i don't think i heard marv's call, just noise blasting out of my lloyd tabletop before i realized it was over and started screaming.

oh man, this game haunts me to this day. I was supposed to go but i was sick and watched on TV while my dad, cousin and brother went with a friend of ours. Fun Rangers team they were but had no business even making the playoffs lol. But they made a great cinderella run. Beating the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the league was just incredible. if we had a healthy Barry Beck that year I think we could have at least made it to the Stanley Cup

85/86 was really the peak of go-go 80s hockey. Love watching this. Atmosphere is electric. Just a better pace of play, more open ice and creativity. And the play is plenty fast, just with longer shifts players conserved their energy more

I disagree totally. I think the quality of play is significantly higher today and the game is a better spectator sport, especially on TV in HD, compared to this era.

This is one of the great teams in Rangers history. Rangers had the lowest point total out of any playoff team in the conference. The Flyers and Caps had the two highest points totals, 32 and 29 points ahead of the Rangers. You rarely see the lowest seed knock off the top 2 seeds in succession. They just ran into a Canadiens team in the conference finals with Patrick Roy pulling saves out of his ass.

Remember how close we were to playing Hartford in the conference finals too. Habs eliminated Hartford in Game 7 OT by a 2-1 score. Rangers would have had a very good chance to beat Hartford in the conference finals and advance to the finals.

I'm almost positive that Bob Brooke's jersey from this game (and all of the home playoff games) was hanging from the ceiling of Gerry Cosby's until they relocated out of MSG. If not for that turd Claude Lemieux, the Rangers would have most likely played Calgary for the Cup. Patrick Roy was the difference in the Conference Finals against the Canadiens. Especially in that Game 3 at home. I think the Rangers practically doubled up the Habs in shots on goal but Roy was magnificent and then Turd Lemieux scored in overtime again.

Yes Akap, I was at all the home playoff games in 86 playoffs. My old man had a good ticket hook in the 80's at MSG so I was fortunate. And when he couldn't get them I just went and bought a ticket from a scalper outside LOL. 23 years old , working full time, just blow all my money on hockey games. Glory days, why I love watching these videos. Anyway, game 6 clincher yes, 2-1 game Rangers holding on for dear life throughout the 3rd period.
