I had one when they had freshly come out and put a ball bearing kit in it. When I first built it the hubs kinda shattered because that hard plastic did not take kindly to the spray silicone lube that I applied during assembly. Thankfully Royal sent a new tree with those parts on after lecturing me about how silicone lube would not hurt the plastic, but the solvent in the spray can would cause the plastic to spontaneously shatter! Once I got new hubs etc, it was a lot of fun despite the weirdly hard tires

this was almost my first hobby grade RC car! Was doing yard work in high school and drooling at the products in the Tower Hobbies big catalog. And this was one of the less expensive offerings at the time and listed all the bells and whistles. But a classmate had one and broke it pretty quickly. But "adulthood" raised its head and expenses like "having a car" and "insurance" and "gas" ended that obsession for a few years. My cousins getting a new RC10 kit helped scratch the crash and bash itch too.

Wow! That is a really rare car and I have never seen one running! Thanks a bunch for sharing that. It is a very cool car and while a heavily borrowed design they did a lot of interesting things with it. The 4WS is very interesting and I am sure it is a real pain to get set right to not be crab walking all over! It is odd they put nothing back in the back to brace the rear end to the main tub, I can see why so many got broken! Amazing cool car and I am looking forward to seeing it's bigger brother!

I was never a fan of the Royal Ripper. Like many others, I'm sure, I've always regarded it as a cheap (and ugly) knockoff of the venerable HotShot. 30+ yrs later, I have a new appreciation for vintage, quirky, unloved cars like this. Awesome restoration!

Awesome. I'm not a fan of single shock suspensions, but just for the 4WS this is a car I'm really interested in. Back in those days we had the Chrusher here to buy. Distributed by Graupner. But as a kids we always wanted the Clod😁

Since I am nostalgic for and love the Tamiya Hotshot, I have always liked the look of the Royal Ripper and wanted to experience the 4-wheel steering. Looking at the real thing now finally (38 years later) I'm glad I never picked one up. Several points on that car are definitely not well designed and since it was so low production it would have been a nightmare finding parts for it. I'm glad you clearly called out this car was a copy of the Hotshot because it completely was.

Firstly Ed, hello and thanks for sharing your story. To open up and share/comment takes some vulnerability. On the RR, I feel this company gets a ton negativity on its design and it could be coattails kinda creation but what this company did do right was roll some dice, and with just one shot literally succeeded and executed an rc car with some complexity not a grasshopper clone here and came with great art work. Note: It’s not quite a direct copy of Hotshot it’s a bit different. Actually only big issue is the rear chassis support. Cred goes to Chunky gears, axles, medium hard tires for longevity and lexan body work too was cool but as you know plastic has a shelf life considering it’s near 40 years old. Brittle but so is my acquired 85 HS with its notorious part’s history the shock mounts, pretty much all red parts crack, battery door pin servo mounts, etc..This company -Royal - issues came to money. How many rc car dreamers never even get to functional stage? Production, distribution, legal issues, advertising, taxation-country guidelines etc. And considering the time these came there was no modern day technology to help. Truly amazing really. Obviously It needed more research and development but that came to the detriment to strike while iron was hot/shot and well we know the outcome. I could only imagine what could have happened if this company could have succeeded. I wish they had. This car was a fabulous experience to restore and a nice surprise in the operation. If I wanted to race it I would and could but if the track had any jump ramps taller than two ants, I’m pulling out a Tamiya HS. Because when it breaks around the first turn from running in a left on the track “pine comb” my wallet is only 12.99 lighter at most hobby stores online.😂

My first one suffered exactly from a weak spot you tell in your Video. After a long period in the cellar, I took it out and looked what is needed to run it again. After that examination I searched for parts, not an easy job. Over the years I bought three total cars from poor to new condition with box for not much money. But they still wait to get is done, RC Racing and other cars are more interesting at the moment.

Are you not running thru the speed control board? I've had one of these since I was 12. I only got it running once back then and then ran into problems because I didn't really know what I was doing. Took it out last year, 35 years later, and managed to get it running for my kids who then crashed it, full-speed in reverse, into a curb and which led to a burnt corner of the speed control board. I can't find a replacement and don't know how to repair the board, so curious to know your work-around since it looks like you don't have a servo attached to the speed control. I'm an RC novice, so forgive me if it should be obvious, but I'd appreciate any hints.

Hey there, I never use the antiquated msc. They never were reliable even new. I basically use a 1060 hobby wing esc and 2.4 radio. Way more reliable and never a problem. Remember these are crazy rare and expensive and take a lot of time to restore and to run old gear is an accident waiting to happen. The parts are beyond extremely hard to find and sellers want a ton of money not to mention collectors will pay a lot. I’d buy a new rc car from traxxas for some fun family running. Perhaps traxxas Bandits as they are cool. Thanks 😊

Royal crusher was also sold as the Graupner crusher. Might be some minor difference in decals but otherwise should be the same fragile truck. even worse on durability on the chassis on the truck due too the different ride height & ofc being a bit heavier overall.

If you ever come across another Kyosho Outrage ST feel free too convert that too the Kyosho Stadium Baja Beetle, think it's a different set of body mounts, wheels, body basically. One of my favorite kits in terms of looks. Also do you still have the Team Associated rc28t ? there is a front suspension kit for that chassis which might be worth picking up & doing an external lipo mod too the truck so you can fit a larger battery & change it out easier. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYXSanmYmrl5j9k
