Crossovers and SUVs are just pointless in everyday city commute. That extra ground clearance wouldn't do much in everyday traffic. Maybe if you drive involving roads in poor conditions, then you can justify having the use of a crossover. And even that, most of these aren't proficient in actual off-roading either. Then you got SUVs with proper offroad capabilities. But most of the people who buys these, don't even take it off road. Again, pointless. If I want the extra space, I rather have a station wagon (Which is unfortunately being phased out in favour of these crossovers), or a minivan.

With single moms making up the workforce more and more each generation, it was just a matter of time when the vehicles we are now offered have less to do with "driving"(even though manufacturers tell us otherwise) and more to do with convenience and practicality. With bumper and headlight height laws, a more upright vehicle is easier to design and is a win-win since most are based on existing sedan architecture in the manufacturer's eyes. Add to that, most youths these days are less concerned with getting a driver's license at 16(or 18) and the whole sporty, less interior space coupes are hardly in demand(in the whole scope of vehicle sales in the USA). There are alternatives, but they usually are in 4 door form(Civic Type R comes to mind). Hang on to your sporty cars people, 20-30 years from now, they'll be in demand if history has taught us anything :-)

I miss simple hot hatches without tons of power options, and truly base models (talking to you Honda and VW). The Subarus are the only cross over that majes sense to me and jist get better. If you live in wet or snowy areas nothing beats the traction. As far as Toyota goes, they screwed up the Celica with non Toyota Yamaha power plants 20 years ago.

I had one of these. It was the rarer 1986 maroon GT-S. The 'S' signified that The GT-S included larger 14x7" wheels and 225/60HR14 tires, fender flares, independent rear suspension, a sports interior including special seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob. Most of these came from the Supra.

In 1986, I was just fresh out of high school and had bought a (new to me) '78 Celica ST. It was a 5 speed. No power anything. I owned it for 3 months when it was wrecked in an accident. I went a whole month without a car before finding an '81 Celica ST. 5 speed, power brakes, power steering, sunroof, and AC. I was in heaven! I lusted for the new Celica, but at that time I could not afford one.

A really good review. This Celica handled better than the previous generation despite the switch to FWD. I liked the greenhouse on this generation. I had a salaryman neighbor who owned the 1987 hatchback, and he told me it suited him better than an E30. Amazingly less than 10 years after this review, there would be two more great generations of the Celica. That 1994 GT-Four was a rally beast.

Power sunroof, same spoiler, 5 speed manual, power and heated mirrors and even had an all original interior. Unfortunately it was rusted out at the rear wheel wells and I had to let it go. 1987 Celica GTS ,coupe model red!! It was my 1st car when I was 16 and it was a beauty! I loved that car it still looks nice the body lines. The interior was very nice the front seats on the GTS models had the hard backs and thin chrome line around the back they looked great. The dash was superb. It was very functional and had style, lthr wrapped wheel. These were the years when Toyota was putting out cars that were way ahead of most the American cars not just in reliability but style. Oh don't forget the GTS 3 piece spoiler! One of the coolest looking spoilers ever!! 😎 It was a nice sports car in its day. The gts made them look ther best but they were all cool. The ST was kinda wimpy looking but did get super mileage and reliability A+. All Trac Turbo models! Super Rare!! But so cool. 4wd and a turbo added to the 3S-GE engine(GTS 16 valve with more aggressive twin cam) the 3S-GTE (turbo, all trac)!!! Always wanted one but they were so rare. 3S-FE (GT) model out of camry 4cyl was a great engine already. The 3S-GE I believe had only like 4HP more but higher torque for longer.

I had one in the 90's. Bought it used for 2G and 2 years later sold it for 2G. I kept it well it was an island beater. Great car all around.

@1:53 And one of the worst possible locations for an oil filter, just underneath the exhaust manifold! I worked for a 10 minute oil change after graduating high school in 1988 and burned my hands many times changing the oil filter on these engines. The MR2 was even worse, we had a couple almost catch fire because the oil that drained out removing the filter dropped on the hot exhaust system. When an MR2 showed up we would ask them to pull to the side with the engine off to give the exhaust a chance to cool off, it would still make for an tense few minutes when changing the filter.

Shout out to Shine on you Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd playing at 5:07. My favorite song. I also owned a 1994 Celica for for my first car and listened to Shine On for the first time in that Celica.

I still drive a '89 Celica convertible, 5 speed. Summer car with 140K on the odometer. Fun to drive, biggest drawback is lack of airbags. Love those pop up headlights and 80's style.

One of Toyota’s best cars of the era and an exemplar of their front-wheel drive expertise but somehow lacks the distinction and quiet elegance the Prelude exuded. It was kind of lost in Toyota’s giant lineup one switching to front drive, coming across as generic. A shame, really… and I’m a Prelude partisan!

Just imagine what that driver seat looks like today it was already stretching and wrinkling from just being a press vehicle
@shartingfish5761
@shartingfish5761 5 жыл бұрын
That wasn't stretched, the seats were very comfortable and that excess leather was there on purpose, Toyota did that on all there leather seats till about 2010.

ShartingFish It’s stretching, my first car was a 82 cellica GTS fabric was stretched in there my girlfriend had this and the same thing happened to driver seat. And the same thing happened to me 3 Supra driver seat. The hard annoying leather in the ES 250 the Camry or the Cressida didn’t do the same thing tho

philarob80 did it ever rip?
@philarob80
@philarob80 5 жыл бұрын
ShartingFish The cellica and the Supra did yes the Supra around the side blusters and the seat bottoms and oddly both of them on the edges of the headrest. It wasn’t a complete tear you know you could see the white fabric backing and eventually it just stopped at that point

philarob80 weird.. my dad had an 86 till 95 and had over 200k on it when he traded it in.. only thing that ever happened on his was the leather around the shift knob deteriorated otherwise it was perfect inside and out.. though it was meticulously maintained and garage kept..

These were nice cars, but I did like the styling of the previous Celica and Supra much better.. I had a friend with an 84 Red Celica Coupe and I also had a friend with an 85 White Supra GT fastback.. Awesome Cars!

i had this car in gray, everything worked. Sunroof, power seat bolstering, heated mirrors and a ripper of an engine. Oh my God it could take a beating, wish i still had it though cause it was fun. The next car i had was an AE89 Corolla and yeah it had the 4AGE but sheesh pretty slow but was heavier.

My name is identical to the 1993 super car. In those days in Poland it was space. When 60 percent on the road were 126 i125p Fiats and FSOs. I was a bit ashamed and felt stupid. Against the background of general poverty 1993 year. Thanks to Balcerowicz's reform!, The car was nice! THANK YOU JAPANESE

I had a total of three of these. My first was an 88gt automatic, bought a wrecked 87st from a kid at school and used it to convert mine to a 5speed, then about 5 years later an 87 gts. I miss them and regret selling them. And I wonder if this review was pre production, 3s-fe and 3s-ge were both DOHC. 🧐

I feel privileged to have grown up in the 80's and 90's when Japanese cars were built to such high quality standards. Today's generation having nothing to compare to so they think new is better. I always think to myself my 21 year old import will outlive me it is so bulletproof!
