ナムコ「システム'87」の記念すべき第1作目となるコミカルなアクションゲーム。画面の半分を占めるメーター類や、地獄巡りという独特の設定がもたらす絵巻風の雰囲気が特徴的。いろいろな妖怪を倒してMONEYを集めて「よろず屋」で買い物をすることでパワーアップできる。また、レバーを下に入れることで気合いを溜めて攻撃力を上げることが可能。道中の様々な行動によってエンディングが異なるという、マルチエンディングが採用されて話題を呼んだが、ゲーム後半の進行方法や難易度が一般向けとはいえず、結局一部のマニアにしか受け入れられなかったようである。全5ステージ。余談だが、アーケード版が発表された当時、テレホンカードなどのノベルティグッズをテレビ番組のプレゼント商品として提供するなど、積極的な宣伝活動をしていた。
ストーリー:
たろすけはイタズラ好きのワンパク小僧でした。いつもイタズラをしては、村の人々を困らせていたのです。あまりのワンパクぶりを見かねた神様は、たろすけにお仕置きをする事にしました。神様は、たろすけが眠っている間に地獄の入り口まで連れて行きました。そこはこわいこわーい世界だったのです。神様は言いました。「たろすけよ！おまえはこれから５つの地獄を旅して修行するのじゃ。そしてエンマ大王の裁きを受けるのだ。裁きによっては、２度と人間世界へ戻れないかもしれないぞ。但し、お前にひとつだけ念力を授けよう。それを使って地獄の妖怪どもと闘い、己の運命を開いてみるがいい！」 こうしてたろすけの地獄の旅が始まったのです。たろすけの運命やいかに!?

Youkai Douchuu-ki was released in April 1987 in Japan. It was known outside Japan as "Shadow Land".
The title of this game translates from Japanese as 'Supernatural Creature Traveler's Journal'.
Tarosuke appears as a playable character in the Japan-only RPG titled Namco x Capcom. In the game he teams up with Taira no Kagekiyo from "Genpei Toma Den".
Alfa Records released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Namco Game Music Vol.2 - 28XA-171) on 25/08/1987.
- TIPS AND TRICKS -
* There are 5 different endings depending on what you do during the play :
1) you go to Hell
2) you go to slave world
3) you go to beast world
4) you return to human world
5) you go to heaven
The endings are listed in crescent order of difficulty.
Here are the conditions to get the 5 different endings. To get the endings you need to fill certain conditions only on the last level of the game.
1) Heaven ending : On the last level, don't collect anything that would increase your score. Also, don't kill any enemies.
2) Human World ending : On the last level only collect something that would increase your score from 100 to 500 points. Also, kill only from 1 to 30 enemies.
3) Beast World ending : On the last level, collect something that would increase your score from 600 to 1000 points. Also, kill only from 31 to 70 enemies.
4) Demon World ending : On the last level only collect something that would increase your score from 1100 to 2000 points. Also, kill only from 71 to 100 enemies.
5) Hell ending : On the last level only collect something that would increase your score from 2100 points and over. Also, kill over 101 enemies.

このゲームでの1コイン天界は鬼火をスクロールで消すパターンを完ぺきにこなさないとならず、例えTAS使おうがパターンを構築しなければできないものです。当時ゲーセンでプレイしていましたが人間界ENDがやっとでしたね

PCエンジン版は簡単だったので、余裕で天界クリア 出来ましたが、アーケード版は出来る気がしませんでした（＾＾； それにしてもこの方のプレイは上手すぎる！！

たろすけにとって一番なのは、人間界に戻る事じゃないかな？ 天界に行くのが一番難しいし、最高のエンディングって事なんだろうけど、それって「あの世」に行ってしまう事だから、結局は死んだままって事でしょ？

人間界に帰れても年取ったら結局死ぬだろ。この糞ガキが娑婆で大往生してもどうせ地獄行なんだから見切りつけていけるうちに天界に行くのがベストアンサー。

Actually no - in Arcade version, it depends purely on what you do in the last level. Throughout stages 1-4 you can kill and grab cash to your heart's content, but in order to get good endings, you must refrain from killing enemies and pick up as little money as possible *during stage 5 only.*

@@ThinBear4 That’s interesting. You could defend yourself and get the cash for the power-ups, until you get to Stage 5. Then you’re doing a “pacifist poverty run”: kill nobody if you can, and avoid picking up anything (so you don’t get judged greedy and murderous; defending yourself only goes so far, but getting to be judged by Buddha means you must show your “true goodness” and not be swayed by Greed and Wrath).
