My dad told me about this commercial years ago. Couldn't find it until now. He said it was originally done by a Cadillac dealer in Michigan, then some marketing genius from GM saw it and the rest is history. Car and Driver's Winners and Losers segment for the year put it in the Winners column saying "There's no substitute for inches"

We all knew about the Brougham, but anybody who was anybody back in the late 80s didn't want to be seen in a big American boat anymore. The downsized GM sedans were not lamented by many since they were successfully selling better than the outgoing models they replaced. I do love that they commercial digs it in a little deeper into Lincoln by stating that Caddy held its value better.

GM never promoted the full size CAdillac after 85 as they wanted to make small front drive models, but the Brougham sold and they kept making it until 1996. The excuse for dropping the rear drive Cadillac was they needed the plant to make pickups and SUV''s. How come my 99 Suburban was built in Mexico?

Many of Lincoln's dash controls were stock parts from the Ford parts bin including the crummy steering wheel & column whose tilt action was lousy. The Brougham's hallmark rear end styling with 3-piece bumper and encapsulated taillamps while every other car wore a straight rear bumper which was little more than impact ram bar. Cadillacs were better finished overall with higher quality chrome and stainless trim. Lincoln's handling was Novocain-numb with substantial body roll on turns while the full size GM chassis had an excellent balance between comfort & handling. These are only some of the highlights where I've found Cadillac to compare favorably with Lincoln of the same size and class. While there is no question the EFI Ford 302 V8 was a more capable and better performing powerplant than the Olds 307 in the Cadillac, it's still not enough to overcome the Brougham''s advantages in overall refinement in my book. I say this having owned many of each. :)
@TVHouseHistorian3 жыл бұрын
I love your insight. I agree totally, though I always felt that Lincoln had a bit quieter ride. Aside from that, it didn’t have any advantages over the Cadillac for me. By 1987, Cadillac had done a superb job with their suspension systems in both their front and rear drive cars. You are so right about Lincoln’s tilt steering wheel. Horribly done, I thought. Cadillac’s refinement and emphasis on driver comfort was unmatched, IMHO. I’ve driven both Lincolns and Cadillacs myself, and I always have to come back to Cadillac - especially when you’re talking the late 1980’s.

HILARIOUS! One could easily forget about the series of bad Cadillac engines in the 1980s that sent many traditional luxury car buyers to Lincoln, which had avoided such major fiascos during this era.
@the-dullahan2 жыл бұрын
This is a 1987, it didn't have a problematic engine, and for that matter, it didn't even have a Cadillac engine as an available option, but hey, way to tell the whole internet you know nothing about cars. Both engines available in 1987 were bulletproof, with many of them still on the road today at 300,000+ miles.
@tyler26102 жыл бұрын
@@the-dullahan They we’re obviously referring to the flops Cadillac made in the early 80’s with items like the V8-6-4, Diesel engines standard on the Seville, or the Cimmaron…but clearly you know best.
@the-dullahan2 жыл бұрын
@@tyler2610 by "the V-8-6-4" I presume you mean the 368, and the 368 was fine. I owned a car with one for a while. Even at 250,000 miles, it didn't burn a drop of oil, and I literally drove it coast to coast four times without any concern, on top of it's regular trips around the country. I've personally seen 368 cars that have reached over 300,000 miles several times . There are in fact tons of them on the road today, though less than it's bigger cousins, the 425, 472, and 500, but that's not due to reliability, it's simply that they were much rarer engines. At it's base, the 368 was simply a fuel injected, solid, and bulletproof cast iron bigblocks are actually fairly sought after engines. The only reason they're not more popular engine swaps is because they're the same rough block as the 472/500 (which use the exact same block as one another) and those are more powerful, more common engines. But there are plenty of performance builds on the 368 in everything from 4x4 trucks to drag cars. Now, I am not a fan of the Cimmaron, but that definitely isn't what he's talking about, because this isn't a Cimmaron commercial, and the Cimmaron didn't even have a Cardiac engine. The SeVille is also not in this video, and Cardiac also never made a diesel engine for the SeVille. So super weird you would bring either of those up.
@the-dullahan2 жыл бұрын
@@tyler2610 but again, you clearly don't have any clue what you're on about. You are talking about cars and engines which aren't even in this commercial. Even more funny though was how wrong you were about one engine (the 368) which was also the only Cardiac engine you even mentioned.

@@the-dullahan The commenter said “series of bad Cadillac engines in the 80’s”… How does that have to limit it to the 1987 model year??? They were simply stating that just a few short years after these embarrassments that badly damaged the company the buying public was simply supposed to forget them, that clearly went over your head! I’m not going to bother arguing with you any farther because you clearly know everting but you may want to look up the standard engine on the 1980 Seville. Nice show on size, but bigger didn't mean better here. The Lincoln had a more powerful and advanced EFI engine, more interior room, optional digital instrumentation with trip computer, and optional CD Player with JBL speakers. His Lincoln is multi port fuel injected. Your Cadillac has a CARBURETOR!!!! Forget about bigger. I'll take the MPFI 302 V8 over the OLDSMOBILE 307 with a CARBURETOR any day. Let's talk about TRANSMISSIONS!! The Lincoln uses the VERY RELIABLE (just watch out for the pesky throttle valve cable grommet) AOD transmission. The Cadillac uses the VERY SKETCHY THM 200 4R transmission. In stock form, this transmission wasn't very reliable. That being said, Cadillac would do something cool for the Brougham for 1990... They would give you the option of a 5.7 liter fuel injected CHEVROLET V8 with the excellent THM 700 R4 transmission. Basically a Chevy truck powertrain. Very reliable and powerful. That was the last year that the Oldsmobile 307 and the putrid 200 4R transmission would disgrace a Cadillac. (The 307 was slow but reliable used from 1986-1990) ( the Cadillac built 4.1 liter V8 used from.1982-1985 was a horrendous piece of shit with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It was VERY SLOW TOO). The base engine for 1991-1992 was the reliable Chevrolet 305. It had adequate power. These engines used the THM 700 R4 transmission as well. This was a reliable powertrain. The optional 5.7 liter V8 (350) was smooth, powerful, reliable, and fun.
