I’m the boy in the backseat. Scott Curtis. Thank you for posting this. This commercial was innovative. It used special high speed cameras which were so loud that we couldn’t use any of the sound that was filmed. But the result of the high frame rate was clarity like never seen before. It was meant for movie theaters.

I did craft service on this! It was my very first job in Hollywood. It was shot at GMT Studios in Culver City as an industrial for that year's Chevy dealer convention to introduce them to the Corsica (except for the last part of the car driving off which we shot out in the desert somewhere). I had a flat top at the time so Doug Trumball had me sit in an old-school Chevy convertible that was floating around once the aliens "collected" the Corsica (naturally you can't see me). We dubbed the people who moved those big jaggedy things encircling the Corsica once it's on the UFO "blade runners." Mark Stetson from Boss worked on it, as did Matt Yuricich and Joe Viskocil did the physical FX. Thania St. John who went on to become a big TV writer was our production coordinator. And I made sure they had all the M & M's they could eat!

I think i recognize that desert from the opening, since it resembles the same road used for the opening scenes of the Genesis pilot episode of Quantum Leap (where Al cavorts with a woman before he learns that Sam has stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator prematurely due to pressure from funding groups). as for Viskocil's work, i'm very familiar with the work he did for The Terminator (i.e. the scene with the exploding tanker truck after Sarah plants a pipe bomb into the truck's exhaust pipe).

The idea that this commercial even existed is amazing. Where else have you seen a two-and-a-half-minute commercial from the late '80s for a car, let alone one that is executed like a cheesy and campy sci-fi movie from the late '50s? I can't believe someone at GM thought that this was their best idea.

@patndave491918 күн бұрын
I owned a 1989 LTZ with the 2.8 V6 and it was so reliable and fun to drive. And so cheap to buy and maintain. The brakes only lasted 20k, with spirited driving. I now have a 2017 XTS and it has more luxury, but it reminds me of the LTZ's seat of the pants driving thrill.

So the cars and people were cloned. This means that a version of this family didn't get to go home. What must it be like for the people traped in the cloned cars?
@marcusdamberger3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, what about the cloned human beings inside, they now float in a constellation of GM built cars this alien race collects. Every so often another newer car appears with occupants because they are all abducted from this desert road. Do they yell to each other asking what year it is as they pass in their bubbles? Or can they even hear anything outside their bubbles?

The twist to the commercial was that the aliens were there to reclaim one of their own: the man's wife. The commercial ends with the wife in the kitchen and her back to her husband and she has whites for eyes.
