Man i wish i was old enough to have been rollin coal down the asphalt in the 70s and 80s might have been a rough ride but damn the trucks then were beautiful machines aint nothing like the trucks in thos times
@StonedPony14 жыл бұрын
They were not that ruff as most had airbags under the rear end. Ford had an air ride cab back then (1976 up) way before it's time. I drove over the road back then and have had fast trucks and slow trucks. Big engines back when were the 3408 cats, E-8 Mack, 475 hp Detroit two-stroke, Alis Cambers had the big purple big AL 450 hp, and Cummins had two engines KTA 600 and the KTTA 600. Hard to say of these which was the best, but Detroit could not run with the others. Here is the break down of these engines. The Cat 3408 engine had a soft crank in that the pistons set up at around 60 degs would snap if you gave it to much. It would pull and do great if you keep your foot out of it. The Mack E-8 was and still a great engine and would last. Cummins two Kta type engines were different and both were like walking on eggshells. The KTTA had ungodly horsepower as it started around 650 hp and you could turn it to 1200 hp. The Kta Cummins would do 625 hp and started around 450 hp. The Alis Chambers started at 450 hp and I know some had 725 hp. They would pull and for some reason, Alis stopped putting them in over the road trucks around 1980. All the other engines made were between 290- 425 hp and as such one of the above would eat their lunch. The Cabover trucks were ruff riding as hell except for the Ford CL9000. Hoods were nice and rode great but you have to remember that we had length laws back in the '70s and early '80s. Back then 55' the '70s was it and anything over would get you a ticket. It then went to 65' and after the 48' trailers came out there was mostly no length law. That is where you saw the longer wheelbase trucks start coming about. I can tell you 55'/3" would get you a $121.00 ticket 1979 in Tenn. Yep, I had them show me on the tape as I knew I could not be over length. Come to find out the shop had changed bumpers on the trans star 2 and placed washers and added a plate and that changed the length. The companies head shop guy had a talk to his guys about that. Weight was another thing as well. Everywhere but up the Mississippi River was 80,000 pounds. MS, Ark, Mo, and ILL was 73,280 pounds gross weight. Needless to say, I and others learned real quick how to run around scales. Fruitloop made a good looking hood back then as well, but the Pete ext hood was the truck everyone wanted. That truck would take any engine. I can say I have had one of the fastest trucks in the US at one time as I and a few others left Elpaso and a little less than 8 hours later we're in Houston Tx, 1986was the year and the engine was this KTTA 600 1000 hp 6x6 over trans 292 gears. I had to back out of it for them to stay with me. I had to be in Cigar city produce market the next morning before 5:00 am their time coming from shaky. We all had fun back then and you could see 3 or more trucks pull over to help a broken-down truck. If one driver didn't have the part to fix it with some other drive may have it and it was fixed if they could.

Stoned Pony1 i drove 379s 389s w900 all long hoods the petes were 36’ and my kw i drive now is 36.7’ long thats just my truck then my trailers are 50’ and 53’ and usually weigh around 96,000 lbs total trucks have come a long way but in the wrong way. There a few old trucks with millions of miles and more over hauls than owners. Today our trucks r more unrealiable then ever. i get a new truck every 50,000 to 100,000 miles and within that time my truck is in the shop atleast 4 times before i swap for a new thats unexeptable and im a stickler on maintenance. Not to mention my kw only has 1 stack thats functional the other is just stuck on for looks not even connected because of the def and the jake sounds like a sick kitten. Back then the trucks always sounded better than the radio if u could even here the radio haha and had big old steering wheels beautiful dashes had reliability and simplicity so it could be worked on by the driver with common knowledge. and also u r 100% correct about everybody stoping to lend a hand i remember seeing that all the time but not these days people will drive by all day and rarely u may get a car or 2 to stop and ask if you need a ride or a hand its sad
