What a warrior Wayward Lad was. For me along with Pendil, the best horse never to win the Gold Cup.

Love reading all the comments about Wayward Lad, he was a horse the public loved. One of the very best chasers of the 80's and one of the finest jumpers of a fence too. 3 King George's in a very strong era speaks for itself. My favourite NH horse from the 80's....:-)

My first Cheltenham as a raw 17 yr old Irish man ..saved my money from a claokroom job all winter ..slept in the stand....jumped the last hurdle at 2am too keep warm(if half the horses I backed over the years jumped it as well is be a rich man now😂) ..backed forgive n forget at 5/4 for a place on the tote😢..backed the County hurdle winner at 10s...with my last 2 quid ...put the 22 pounds on western sunset at 10s only form him to be caught on the line in semi darkness by francome😢..then met 4 caracters on the tran to London and got pissed on whiskey...great memories

A good field that year and the race run in very difficult conditions. It was a minor miracle that the race took place at all. But it was a good one with The Thinker a worthy winner, though probably not remembered as one of the great winners, none the less it was a fine performance. And a great run too by Cybrandian.

+dukeofmodena He raced in a strong era that included Burrough Hill Lad and all the other star chasers from Michael Dickinson's yard. He would have beaten Dawn Run at level weights in 1986, going down by only 3/4 length trying to concede the 5lb mares' allowance. This is the best Gold Cup performance by an 11yo since Mandarin' s victory in the 1960s. Only Denman has equalled it since. It's a travesty that Charter Party went on to win a weak Gold cup in 1988 but wonderful Wayward Lad never won one.

Sadly the winning rider Ridley Lamb died 7 years later in a car accident aged only 39. He was a very good jockey who rode 547 winners in his career. He was champion amateur in 1975 before turning pro. He also rode the Scottish National winner Sebastian V in 1977 making all. Remember this Gold Cup well, Forgive N Forget did seem a worthy favourite at about evens but jumping errors cost it. The 80s was a fantastic era for jumpers, so many great horses including Wayward Lad and of course Desert Orchid. My own favourite was Sea Pigeon, the late runs it used to come with were adrenalin buzzes when the money was down! RIP R.Lamb

@@maureenormston1687 Hello Maureen, I don't think he ever got up that Momentous Cheltenham hill in my view. It tends to be make or break with most Gold Cup horses but as you say a Class horse and very gallant genuine horse like Spanish Steps . You can apply similar slant ' to the now diluted Grand National but with the distance you need a stayer like Red Rum or Lescargot..... +Tim Starbuck No Flying Bolt was the best horse not to win the Gold Cup, He was rated only 2lb behind Arkle. Flying would have picked up Wayward Lad and carried him and still win,Alas he never got to run in the Gold Cup due to a couple of circumstances. 1- He was from the same stable as Arkle,2- he developed Brucellosis
@mervyncharter717
@mervyncharter717 8 жыл бұрын
Flying Bolt would have given Arkle a real run for his money if allowed to run in the 1966 Gold Cup. This would have been a tremendous race as that whole season Flying Bolt put up some remarkable weight carrying performances in Bottomless ground in the Massey ferguson, Irish National & Thyestes Chases. Other great horses never to win the Gold Cup, Pendil, Brown Lad & Tied Cottage.

As he never ran in the race Flying Bolt is not the best horse not to win the Gold Cup Yes probably a better horse than Wayward Lad but pick him up and carry him no certainly not around Kempton,its to his credit he ran well/tried hard over a course that didn't play to his strengths and a distance 2 1/2furlongs too far and but for those freak conditions in 1987 who's to say he might not have won at 12 yrs of age.
@jamesvaughan7697
@jamesvaughan7697 5 жыл бұрын
+1414yorks you any idea how good Flying bolt was? 2nd highest rated chaser ever within 1lb of Arkle. Jim Dreaper who trained both reckoned Flying bolt was the better. Would have carried Wayward Lad (who I loved) and stop for a sandwich and still beaten ANY GOLD CUP FIELD
